It's actually a lot older. Think old maps. Longitude and latitude are the origins of the coordinate system. Think z for height wins this one.

Don't forget about scale! Most tools including Godot use meters, but Unreal uses... centimeters... and also Valve's Source engine uses sixteenths of a foot (wtf?)

Didn't this all start with Autocad 3D defining Z up in 1982 and then when Autodesk created 3D studio the convention just transferred. So, in a nutshell, lets blame Autodesk and stick with Y up :o)
