"This article will veer away from the dominant discourse on policing and criminalisation, which only tangentially engages with caste and casteist criminalisation."
I cannot believe that as children we were required to take permission to drink water in class at school.
The level of subservience that is drilled into children at such a young age is unbelievable.
My neighbour recently asked me "akeli rehti ho toh itna samaan kiske liye khareed rahi ho" while I was buying vegetables.
Love how the mere existence of single women is a threat to thekedars of the institution of family.
Day 9 of the Satyagraha in Bhopal.
Protestors singing at Iqbal Maidan:

A Dalit girl died by suicide in Kerala, but there is outrage over her death as much as there is over the elephant's.
As Dalits, we have been reminded repeatedly about how little our lives matter.
Kangana Ranaut turned out to be a Sanghi, doesn't mean we should all be running to mollycoddle Hrithik Roshan.
She can be a fascist jackass, and still be abused by a man especially an influential one. This is not a mutually exclusive phenomenon.
Overheard a woman in the theatre calling her father excitedly during the interval of

to tell him that Bhim Jayanti was being shown on the big screen.
What a joy it is to watch one of our own tell our stories
Signed up to be a member of one of the POC groups at Oxford, and received a document soon after which states that they have a zero tolerance policy toward "Hinduphobia" among ors.
Interestingly, casteism doesn't feature on the laundry list of things they have zero tolerance for.
Remembering Bhanwari Devi today whose struggle has enabled scores women to come forward with their stories of workplace sexual harassment, but for whom justice continues to remain elusive
This Brahmin-Bania husband and wife vlogger duo have made a video asking their subscribers to "suggest"whether they should fire their domestic worker who extended her leave without intimation.
Savarna entitlement to caste based labour knows no bounds.
The split judgement by the Delhi HC in the marital rape case is another reminder that Courts will never do anything to disrupt the Brahminical patriarchal institution of family.
Been hearing a lot of UC kids talk about the "exciting experience of being detained by the police during CAA protests"
Talking about having a good time in a place that has been historically violent to marginalised communities, is not the flex you think it is

This

is a moment to lend our support to the resistance for the rights of ASHA and Anganwadi workers who have single-handedly shouldered the burden of a broken public healthcare system.
The fees for Dalit and Adivasi students to access "the law school" is 2,58,875 per annum! Merely 4k less than the fees for the general category.
High time we stopped pretending that the National law school system was designed for anyone but Savarna people.
Woke up this morning thinking about the time when a Brahmin professor at an elite institution where I studied reprimanded a student by saying
"if a Shudra makes such a mistake it's understood, but this not expected of a Brahmin"
'Nanna munna rahi hoon' will be blared through speakers across the country today against the backdrop of a Dalit child being killed for drinking water in violation of the caste of system.
The Vishaka case that gave this country its law to tackle sexual harassment at the workplace emerged because of the rape of Bhanwari Devi a Dalit woman by UC men.
The petition bore no mention of caste. The erasure of caste has been a key facet of "feminist engagement with law".

as an Indian Equality Law Visiting Fellow researching on Adivasi women and anti-discrimination law in India.
Excited and nervous to be in an academic institution after over 5 years!
It's amusing to see Brahmins living abroad cry themselves hoarse talking about white people's racism, while failing miserably in understanding their own position as perpetrators within the caste system.
I have been living in Madhya Pradesh for 3+ years now. Yet EVERY week I receive a message from Airtel welcoming me to MP.
I feel extremely welcomed here. You can stop now thanks.
Visited Babasaheb's house in London. It's been a great source of pride for my father to see me studying in the same country as Dr Ambedkar.
This visit feels like a fitting end to my journey to the UK that has been enabled by the life, and legacy of Babasaheb.
I am petrified of men who have feminist vocabulary down pat. The kind who know what's the most politically correct thing to say in any situation.
More often than not praxis means nothing to this species. They're bloody bhediyas who have mugged up words to gaslight effectively.
As we celebrate Devangana and Natasha's release, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I will reiterate that ALL prisoners are political prisoners.
In a system that perpetuates structural violence against DBAs and Muslims, the incarceration of all prisoners is political
Colleagues and I spent close to an hour in Court today arguing with the staff that accused persons are entitled to receive a copy of the FIR registered against them.
This labour day I hope we can remember and be grateful for the work of thousands of Bahujans working tirelessly in crematoriums, hospitals, sanitation departments etc as this country implodes.
It's annoying to hear Savarnas talk about themselves in third person particularly while critiquing their community.
Why can't they say 'we' when talking about a group that they are a part of and continue to derive privilege from?
“I couldn’t see my mother one last time before her death because I was denied parole. This is a denial of basic Human Rights. My mother passed away when I was in Prison. Being a disabled child since birth, my mother brought me up with utmost care. She used to take me to school in
The furore around
@ProfRavikantK
's incisive especially affirms the unravelling that Brahmins and Savarnas experience when they find themselves even remotely being treated as research subjects.
When Savarna feminists like Bhasin say " humse caste nahi ho pata" it is loaded with centuries of upper caste impunity that now masquerades as castelessness.
Matlab sirf humara caste, caste hain aur tumhara non-issue?
The audacity of lawyers and academics to consistently invisiblise the structural violence inflicted by criminal justice system as an "implementation problem" deserves to be commended.
Co-passengers have been asking their two year old to repeat "Jai S*ri R*m" for the over 30 mins. Videos have also been played to get the child to chant.
Happy to report that this little human has refused to give in much to the annoyance of the parents lol
Read Bojja Tharakam's powerful account today on the anniversary of the Mahad Satyagraha when a procession of 2500 Dalits led by Babasaheb Ambedkar exercised their right to drink water from the public tank.
Jai Bhim!
Thread:
In 2019, I spent 6 weeks going to the OBGYN section of a govt hospital daily for a case. Everyday I saw dozens of women from marginalised communites scrambling for medical care.
One day a woman who had recently given birth was at the hospital in immense pain.
Those of us who have studied in elite Indian universities continue to be scarred by the casteism that is the fabric of these institutions.
The
#IITKharagpur
incident is yet another reminder of the everyday violence being inflicted on DBA students in these "temples of learning".
Savarna people are always paranoid about being duped by the working class such as domestic workers, vegetable vendors etc.
One the other hand there's absolutely apathy despite being constantly taken for a ride by the State.
Sometimes I want to scream at Savarnas sometimes and say when your grandparents were making "art" mine were struggling to remain alive.
We are absolutely NOT the same.
Read
@KhabarLahariya
's incisive statement about the inaccurate representation of their work by the
#Oscar
documentary.
The statement is a reminder that those who have made a business out of "critiquing power structures" have never had to confront them in any form.
Last week a client from the Pardhi community (a formerly criminalised tribe) spent an additional day in prison, without bail for a petty offence not requiring arrest because the police did not have the key to the cupboard where his case diary was kept.
It's frustrating to read Savarna writers rely on the metaphor of "treated as an untouchable" so casually.
How difficult is it to not rely on the prism of historical violence against a section of society to describe one's most innocuous feelings?
Every time I have joined participated in any discussion on
#MeToo
since 2018, I am painfully reminded that it's a Savarna women's echo chamber.
Peppering the conversation with the term intersectionality is not going to make it "inclusive".
There's a lot of (justified) rage against casteist bigots, but we must resist the urge of relying on criminal law.
Demands of arrest and incarceration only has the effect of strengthening a criminal law system that has been designed to oppress Bahujans.
I'm confused when people say you should "network". When it seems like in order to network one needs to know the "right" people, their pop culture, language, other references.
Love the circular logic of networking which requires people to already have access to the said network.
"Hinduphobia" has been added to a list of "historically oppressed minority groups".
Seems like a sign from the Universe that I have received this document on the auspicious occasion of a member the said opressed minority becoming the PM of this country.
We should be extremely wary of endorsing such sensationalist crime thriller type info such as the one below put out by cops.
It runs the risk of both police investigation and the right of the accused to a free and fair trial being heavily compromised.
Horrific details!
Aftab used agarbatti, potpourri & room fresheners to mask the stench. Police took him to Mehrauli jungle to recover the parts. Police sources said they have found 13 body parts, mostly bones. He bought a new fridge to store body parts.

Sister moving to new place, did a griha pravesh. I took photos, wore the tika, dhaga etc but didn't sit in the Puja or havan. My niece learnt that her mom is believer but masi is atheist. That both are possible. It's how I embody my politics and set example with my own life.
As a Dalit student trying to pass as Savarna at the time, this moment was a reminder that no matter how hard we tried within the scheme of Brahminical meritocracy some lives would always be deemed unworthy.
Last week we secured bail for a 15 year old Pardhi boy who was incarcerated for a week during the lockdown. Everyday there are numerous children from marginalised communities who are detained and tortured by the police.
Police brutality is a part of their everyday reality.
As a Dalit student, a major challenge while applying for internships was talking oneself into applying because one never felt "meritorious" enough.
As we open internship applications for
@CPAProjectIndia
, I hope DBAV students find it in themselves to submit that application..
Only those who have presumed a homogeneous category of "women" to be the fulcrum of all kinds of marginality are "shocked" by a woman being a perpetrator of violence against Muslim women.
It's amazing how our caste identities are used as prefixes in all aspects of our lives (Dalit woman, lawyer etc), but it's a problem if we do the same with Savarnas.
Why does caste only mean Bahujans? Do the oppressed exist in a vacuum?
Getting published in the
@IndianExpress
was thrilling! It's the first English newspaper that my parents subscribed to, when we moved to Bombay, to help improve my vocab.
As a child, I read the paper hoping to get published someday. Couldn't contain my excitement when it happened!
These "exciting experiences" are then sold to white people in University apps as being at the receiving end of State repression is the upholding the Savarna legacy of benefiting from the traumas of the oppressed.

Chetan Ahimsa's arrest for criticising a judge's misogynistic comments against a rape survivor underscores the impunity of an institution supposedly tasked with maintaining "checks and balances" in a democracy.

Yet those whose sense of touch continues to be enmeshed with caste are considered to be best suited aka "most meritorious" for a profession the ethos of which is care.

She was crying and while attempting to walk accidentally leaned on a doctor for support. The doctor glared at her said "haath nahin lagana" (do not touch me).
The mere touch of a person from a marginalised community was enough to repulse the Savarna doc
It's all very well to denounce some abstract notion of Brahminical power. The real work lies in challenging Brahminism in one's daily life and intimate spaces that most "allies" seem reluctant to do.
It's possible for Savarna women to be oppressed while also being the oppressor.
These aren't mutually exclusive phenomenon. These aren't mutually exclusive phenomenon.
