Viral persistence in Long Covid is a particularly hot topic. In this film I talk to
@microbeminded2
about the evidence which is mounting up and why Occam’s razor starts to get more and more applicable.

Great interview, Gez! The ONLY question you forgot to ask is: If Long Covid is all about SARS-CoV-2 persistence, how comes that you can develop the EXACT same picture and clinical course without ever having encountered SARS-CoV-2 (I am referring to vaccine induced Long Covid).
@RenzPolster
@microbeminded2
It seems like vaccine induced LC is a subset of LC and doesn’t quite have the same number or volume of symptoms. Dysautonomia features very highly though. Presence of spike triggers some of the same autoantibodies that have the same effect on autonomic system maybe?

Such an interesting discussion; thanks!
I have wondered whether prolonged/strenuous exercise while incubating the virus may in part contribute to impaired ability to clear it by inducing immune suppression. So many athletic people struggle with CFS and Long Covid.

Great interview, thanks for sharing!
One interesting aspect, which does not seem to fit in the persistence narrative, is the symptoms of vax injured people. They seem to be similar to long covid symptoms.

Great insights from Dr Amy Proal. Just surprised there wasn't any mention of the big NIH, NCI, University of Maryland autopsy preprint.

Hi gez. This theory sounds likely for me personally. My symptoms just continued after the initial infection. I haven’t developed new symptoms and they have been extremely slowly improving over time.
@gezmedinger
@microbeminded2
As a patient, this seems so intuitive. Before I had any clue wtf any of these acronyms meant, or even knew the different between EBV and mono, I went to my doctor and said, “I know this isn’t supposed to happen, but I think I got mono again”

Many thanks, Gez. Excellent as always.
Of particular resonance, Dr. Proal's observation that as soon as we see that antivirals like Paxlovid are effective in acute COVID-19, "it seems pretty logical to start trialling them in Long Covid".
@gezmedinger
@microbeminded2
Thank you both, the theory of viral persistence makes a lot of sense. Great to hear the different aspects of long covid tied in together. Please keep going, the great research & communications, are appreciated.

Where does this leave V LH-ers?
Are we still producing spike protein? Because if my left arm is the reservoir I don’t mind losing it if it leads to recovery...
Alternately was considering reactivated viruses never clearing? I am clot filled if that builds a fuller picture.

Gez. Amy, I feel optimistic after 2 years of
#LongCovid
that we will have something soon that might just let us return to our previous lives. So happy you enjoy what you do and are driving forward, it makes all the difference to us. Thank you

Anecdotal perhaps but one of the symptoms I have had was stomach issues - lots of medication needed. Needed emergency appendectomy in January. Other long Covid symptoms persist but stomach issues improved - off the medication.
