Drawing the Historical Past
Do you draw history? If so, which period are you mainly focusing on? I’d love to see your works and be inspired by it! 😊
As for myself, I mainly do medieval age (8th - 15th cent.), though I have done art in antiquity and early modern period.

“A brave girl who survived from a pillage”
I haven’t made a comic for sometime, so thanks for the opportunity 🙂
Ara-Aragon sama and Castille-kun
“Ara-Ara? You want a dynastic union?” ❤️❤️
…and thus, a dynastic union between the Crown of Aragon and Kingdom of Castile and Leon eventually lead to the birth of ‘Spain-chan’ 🤣
Rina the Fighter
Rina was created from an art-jam where I was asked to design to a DnD fighter ‘waifu’. Her fashion is mix and match, but it was a nice break from my historical series
Due to her popularity, she was featured in the Smiling Cuman Doujins, much to her outrage 😅
GoTHICC Girl 5.0
I have been summoned by

over this ‘gothic cuirass’ image and also because of the magic word ‘GoTHICC’. I am thus obliged to create this abomi….*ahem*…drawing to spread awareness😆

The Braided Khatun
Another sketch showcasing Smiling Khatun's braided hairstyle. Members of the Gokalpbäg clan considers the style and number of braids as status symbol and indication of their ranks.
The Khatun considers women with short hair as 'strange' and of 'low status' 👀
Smiling Khatun Considers
“Bold of you to have come before me, my Tarqan. For the sake of the celebration, I shall put my blade away. May the wind carries your guests safely to the feast”
Smiling Khatun is considering the invitation. Our Smiling Cuman is safe…for now 👀
The 'Doujin' Incident
"So...my Tarqan, I heard that you've been making some extra earnings. Care to explain this...'Allure of a Khatun'? Why am I naked in this?"
Also refered to as the time when Smiling Cuman got caught selling doujins featuring the Smiling Khatun 😅
Inviting the Smiling Khatun
As the ‘de facto’ ruler of the remote steppe where Smiling Cuman resides, not inviting the Smiling Khatun of Gokalpbäg clan to the supper would be disrespectful. Despite the hostilities due to ‘doujin’ incident, our Cuman brave an audience with her 👀
My Mail is Stuck - The Good Ending
Step-bro managed to get his step-sis out of the mail-stuck fiasco. It’s a lesson learnt for her and they both moved on with their daily lives 🙂
Ara-Aragon Sama’s Naples
Someone asked me if I could show more of Ara-Aragon Sama’s ‘Big Territories’, so here is a drawing of Ara-Aragon sama showing her ‘Naples’😉
Historically speaking, Kingdom of Naples was conquered by Alfonso IV in 1442 and became part of Crown of Aragon

It seems that the depiction of Smiling Khatun, with or without her armour have been received positively.
The Khatun is rather intrigued with the she reaction received, so there will be more of her and how she relates to the lore of Smiling Cuman 🙂
Lord Eagle Huntress of the Gokalpbäg and Heroine of the Four Winds
The official title of Smiling Khatun, de facto ruler of the remote steppe where Smiling Cuman resides. Feared by many, it’s still puzzling as to why the Cuman dared to sells doujins and provoked her wrath…😅
Price of Courage - Introduction

POLAND MENTIONED
Whenever I post something related to Polish history, I get many reactions from Poles.
At least, this is how I feel. You guys are awesome ❤️
Katana & Katakana
I was reading Gunsen’s explanation post on Shad’s video, and couldn’t help making this parody😆
I think I need to re-learn Japanese and Japanese history again to make better (historical) puns 😅
Rina the Fighter
Rina was created from an art-jam where I was asked to design to a DnD fighter ‘waifu’. Her fashion is mix and match, but it was a nice break from my historical series

“Feudalism” is great, if you are part of the ruling class that comes with certain privileges.
Fealty is great on paper, but under feudalism, a man owes obligation to his lords, not to his ‘country’. History has taught us numerous succession crisis and civil wars because of this.
Moderns often use the term "feudalism" to capture the supposed backwardness of the Middle Ages. Even if they don't quite know what feudalism means, they know it's undemocratic—and therefore gross.
But feudalism is based on a simple and sound truth.
The Sinner, the Repenter, the Faithful, The Pious
Burdened by her own sins and guilt, Lady Oda embarked on pilgrimage in the Northenr Crusade to repent and earn her salvation, leaving trails of blood and ruins.
This is the story of Lady Oda the Pious.
Oda the Pious Joins the Grand Tourney
Known for her extreme religious convictions, Countess Oda’s religious military campaign in the Northern Crusade has led to the massacre of 5000 baltic pagans.
With this tourney, she shall use her fame to fund the next crusade.
“When the Mongols killed her husband and took her child, they left her to die in shame. With the burning fire of revenge, she embarked on a journey to punish those that wronged her and find her son”
“The Tale of an Eastern Woman” by Ibn Tawi Al-Kirman, Il-khanate, 1292 AD
The (not so) Smiling Khatun in Colour
A display of luxurious red silk kaftan with decorated pearl roundel brocade and cintamani, as well as golden belt fittings and jewelries.
The Khatun’s regal dress is truly a statement of her wealth, status and power in the Great Steppe 🙂

The Khatun is rather intrigued with the she reaction received, so there will be more of her and how she relates to the lore of Smiling Cuman 🙂

Hello twitter, long time no see. Its been awhile since I post here, perhaps I should be more active 😁
Anyway, here's something for my return, Inspired by an old comic I saw (I think it was korean or something) 😅
Viking Scale of Shieldmaiden-ness
For those aspiring to draw "shieldmaiden" but still undecided when it comes to wardrobe of choice, here is a simple guide to help with the decision making 😋
May be featured in some TV series or D&D RPG. Authenticity is subject to debate 😆
A Plate-tonic Interest
It is true, I have a strong dislike of drawing plate armour, but I still wouldn’t mind drawing them (if required).
European plate harness is not my primary interest at the moment, so I guess its a matter of personal taste 😋
The Late Knight Show is On Air!
Welcome ladies and gents to the Late Knight Show where our host, Velkan, is here to talk on all things plate!
To celebrate our 10k+ milestone, we bring you our special guest today, Gambargin!
Let us begin by asking the important question…
Well
It appears we have reached 10.000 followers
What can I say? Thank you all so much.
I gotta get through a couple difficult weeks, and then I'll see what kind of "special" I do to celebrate. That's a hard milestone to reach.
Thank you again.
Khatun Rakugaki
Just a sketch showcasing Smiling Khatun in full, with her favourite giant two-handed ‘Taiga Sabre’.
To the common man, the sabre is cumbersome and unwieldy, but the ‘Lord Eagle Huntress of the Gokalbäg’, it is an intimidating and deadly weapon. 👀
Smiling Khatun Considers
“Bold of you to have come before me, my Tarqan. For the sake of the celebration, I shall put my blade away. May the wind carries your guests safely to the feast”
Smiling Khatun is considering the invitation. Our Smiling Cuman is safe…for now 👀
A Weapon to Surpass Metal Grills
Ben ‘Madlad Anvil’ has done it again. This time, he has brought this ‘weabomination’ alive, thanks to
@vanishlily
We shall call it ‘Cope the Grass’ because anyone facing Anvil with such terrifying weapon will surely, taste the grass’ 😆
“Italian, in My Medieval Japan??”
Yeah, at one time I came up with a story of how an Italian lady found an unlikely employment as condottiera in Japan during Nanboku-chō period (南北朝時代).
What a strange story it was, but hey, at least I got to practice my Japanese 😆
Katana & Katakana
I was reading Gunsen’s explanation post on Shad’s video, and couldn’t help making this parody😆
I think I need to re-learn Japanese and Japanese history again to make better (historical) puns 😅
On the development of tools in their own context - Japanese swords and discguards.
This is a post that will address one of the lastest video on the topic, in which we see why it is important to consider how discguards should be used before evaluating their functionality.
Smiling Khatun Revisited
I haven’t drawn her for a long time, so here she is!
The “Heroine of the Four winds” is certainly is nice break from the recent studies and drawing all those medieval European stuff in the past few weeks 🙂
The Sabre Khatun
Known her giant Taiga sabre as status symbol, Smiling Khatun is the head of the Gokalpbag Clan branch in the Autonomous Oblast, the de facto ruling power of the region.
Not much is known about her, other than a rumoured connection with the Smiling Cuman
Armour Preference
When it comes to drawing historical illustrations, there are some armours that I dislike to draw, more than any other types.
Made for a private discord group.
Oda the Pious Joins the Grand Tourney
Known for her extreme religious convictions, Countess Oda’s religious military campaign in the Northern Crusade has led to the massacre of 5000 baltic pagans.
With this tourney, she shall use her fame to fund the next crusade.
HEAR YE, HEAR YE!
A Second Grand Tourney has been announced, graciously hosted once again by the Holy Imperial Gottsreich.
Letters of invitation are being sent by land and sea to all corners of the known world.
Any person may participate so long as they bring their own armour…
Tactical (Smiling) Khatun
A quick sketch of the Khatun, depicted alongisde her elite Special Forces “Baghatur”.
They are highly trained commandos sworn to protect the Khatun and carry out her order with deadly precision and efficiency (such as hunting doujin offenders)
The Tollan Saga
“A group of Norse adventurer sailed too far into the unknown continent, ruled by majestic, yet war-like people. They they must survive against the hostile natives to retrive their longship and sail back to Reykjavik…”
Viking and Mesoamerica? Why not 😆
This was commissioned years ago by a Syrian refugee I met, who fled the civil war. He lost his family and asked me if i could draw a picture of his daughter
When I gave him this, I can still remember his words to this day
“Thank you Gambargin, you’ve brought her back to life”
POLAND STRONK
I saw a sharp rise in the number of my followers in Twt/x from my last post, majority of which I assume are Polish/from Poland (Judging from bio)
Trully, a Polska Gurom moment 😆

Journey To The Silk Road
Hi all, it’s been awhile. I’ve been away in the past 6 weeks travelling across Central Asia, visiting historical places and archaeological sites along the ancient silk road 🙂
Apology for my absence, but I hope to post more & share my experience soon!😃
So You Want to Draw Steppe Nomads?
Medieval Central Asia was the crossroad of many great exchanges of culture, wealth and knowledge via the silk road. The fashion worn this region were practical but also quite elegant.
Why not try drawing your OCs in medieval Kaftan? 😊
The Smiling Khatun
“Still reading this filth, Dmitri? So you know where the Cuman is….”
Referred as such because of her anthropomorphic battle helm, the Smiling Khatun along with her four Bagaturs relentlessly hunt the Smiling Cuman for his crime of selling the doujins.
Hunt for the Doujin Sellers
For the crimes of selling doujins depicting the figure known as ‘Smiling Khatun’, our friend Smiling Cuman is actively being hunted on the great steppe by the feared Bagaturs of the Four Winds, retainers of the Khatun.
Poor Cuman…🤦🏻♀️
Bald
A short 4koma story I made last year, inspired by a drawing made by bapogichi(?), as part of a manga discord group comic jam.
I like to experiment with story that evokes emotion from the audience, this is one such attempt 🙂
Äbtissin Gambargina of Reichsfrauenstif is at your service.
“When the Emperor calls, we must answer. I take up my arm in the name of the Gottsreich Empire to put an end to all that is unholy”
You there! Yes, you! The Holy Imperial Gottsreich needs more men to fight the undead scourge!
We need people like you to draw a Gottsreich Soldier, Knight or Mercenary to bolster our numbers! Even stickmen will do!
Will you serve?!
My family is somewhat supportive, but there were times where those around me weren’t so much so. I made these small comic as a reflection of that.
I guess the most important things is to love what you do and keep going. You will find those that appreciate your art eventually 🙂
It’s Gothic, not Goth
On of the curious thing from Japan is the “Gothic Lolita Fashion”, something which is rather popular in Japan and maybe in western world too. 👀
Look, in all honesty, I’m not used to drawing dress. I blame it on too much drawing historical armours 🤣
Gambargina Monogatari
For some reason I want to draw things related to Japanese history…
Why is this sudden surge of inspirations? This is going to be interesting 👀
The Path to Take

A virtuous dame, whose mission is to protect the innocent

From

‘s recent comment regarding wanting to create illuminated manuscript for Ordo Mediare.
This is what I’d imagine one of the design would look like 🙂

Lord Eagle Huntress of the Gokalpbäg and Heroine of the Four Winds

Here at the Queen of Cities, all dreams are made. Do you have what it takes to survive the "Queen of Cities"?
Start your journey as either Mercs, Nobles or Nomads and carve your destiny to become the legend of the Byzantine Empire
A parody of Cyberpunk 2077 😃
A Smiling Khatun in Real Life
The character Smiling Khatun is largely inspired by the picture of the Uyghur lady here, as well as my HWS drawings on the same subject.
Smiling Khatun belongs to the Gokalpbägs, an Uyghur clan whose origin dates back to the old Uyghur Khaganate🙂
This kind of ignorance in the post and comments hit on my nerve. Most people focus more on what the Mongols 'destroyed', but not what they and their successor dynasties (Golden horde, Il-khanids, Timurids, etc..) have built and influenced
But then I realized...this is twitter 😓
It's funny how at one point the Mongolian Empire stretched from the Baltics to the south of China yet had such little cultural impact on the world afterwards
Smiling Cuman got the….bonk?
Furious for being depicted in the doujins, Rina took the matter into her own hand and decided to give Smiling Cuman the much needed Bonk!!!
The result…..is not what she had expected….😅
Rina the Fighter
Rina was created from an art-jam where I was asked to design to a DnD fighter ‘waifu’. Her fashion is mix and match, but it was a nice break from my historical series
Due to her popularity, she was featured in the Smiling Cuman Doujins, much to her outrage 😅
“Productivity”
Sometimes, it is hard to differentiate when passion becomes a burden, and when a burden is done…passionately.
The more we try to do things differently, the more it stays the same.
Such is the curse of creativity.
The Demoness of Harzberg
"Peace, my cousin, is the cloak at which only the weak cowers under. Our great von Harzberg dynasty cannot be ruled by the weak. Those who does not wage war, will be ruled by those who can..."
W.I.P. for my HWS historical series.
So You Want to Draw Medieval Samurai?
Most depictions of Samurai that people are familiar with outside Japan are those from the Sengoku period (16th -17th CE).
I think it is better to familiarise ourself with the Samurai of the earlier period first 🙂
So You Want to Draw Steppe Nomads?
Medieval Central Asia was the crossroad of many great exchanges of culture, wealth and knowledge via the silk road. The fashion worn this region were practical but also quite elegant.
Why not try drawing your OCs in medieval Kaftan? 😊

A Tale of Two Smiles
The eagle soars high up the blue sky and the wolf roams across the land
Where our smiles were once sweet,
Is it cruel for such to turn bitter?
Like a dagger, it struck our hearts,
But will the wounds forever linger?

Happy Nowruz from Gambargin
Many celebrate this auspicious moment in welcoming the spring, a tradition that has survived for millenia.
I wish to all who celebrate it, Happy Nowruz.
May this year and the years ahead be kind to us with warm words, warm meals and a warm home.
Drawing Simple Chainmail
A short notes I made awhile back on how to draw simple cmail for a discord group
I believe understanding its construction and history is important, so we as an artist, can appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into making the armour in real life 🙂

Our Smiling Cuman has managed to return successfully to his home, somewhere in the remote pontic steppe, isolated from outside world.
He is assembling his Yurt at a new location with the help of fellow steppe nomads 🙂
