Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is a stop motion masterclass! The craftsmanship is out of this world, and his retelling is definitely more mature and deviates from the Disney classic a lot, all to it's benefit. Such a lovely film.

Sonny Boy #08 - A masterful piece of art. It hit me hard as feelings of regret have swelled up inside me lately, but all I can do is move forward. Saitou created a stunning example of that feeling through the eyes of a wandering boy turned dog. It was heartbreaking but beautiful.

"Let your bravery burn bright!" Brave Bang Bravern was my favorite anime of winter 2024! An original single-cour anime about unlocking one's bravery. It's campy, it's a bit yaoi, and it's pure mecha adrenaline. It also has my fav OP of the year so far, I highly recommend it!

Suzume (2023) Shinkai crafts a road-trip movie that becomes a love letter to Japan. The mundane moments of this spoke to me more than the actual plot and mystical element, but nonetheless had fun! Has some great sound work and a nice OST - plus, just looks really damn good

I can finally talk about this but I actually worked on the new Studio Ghibli movie! I was in charge of coloring in leaves on background trees. Miyazaki was so impressed with my work, he said "That Mexican sure knows how to color!" I feel so honored and I hope we win the Oscar!

Bakemonogatari #12 easily is my favorite ep. Hitagi is so captivating, she is best girl. Her teasing and her banter are so good but also her vulnerability this ep was incredible and really moved me. It also gives meaning to the ED which I already loved but now love even more!

Bakemonogatari Suruga Monkey was so fucking good. Kanbaru was a joy, her feelings were super strong, plus that action set piece was incredible. I grew more fond of Araragi this arc as well. He's still a little werido but his selflessness here resonated with me.

Renai Circulation - The only Mono OP I knew about before watching because it was so damn popular. Crazy it's only in 2 eps, but it is so cute I like it a lot. The colors, the cozy sounding vocals but lyrics that express Nadeko's true feelings.

Witch From Mercury ED 2 is gonna be hard to beat as ending of the year. The song is chill-inducing, AiNA THE END belts her heart out, I teared up within the first few notes. It's accompanied by just as beautiful visuals, some stunning moments of animation. Just wow #水星の魔女

Sonny Boy #02 - An island engulfed in a blue flame. I love how greed, both material wealth and status, was portrayed and the effects of misinformation among the students. The resolution of the ep and the acceptance from Nagara and Mizhuo I love just as much.

Bakemonogatari Mayoi Snail was really good! The story over 3 eps was very engaging and the payoff was very well done. Really liked the single setting and design of the park. Liked how they built on Hitagi and Araragi's relationship while Mayoi added a spark of energy to the mix.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (2010) A KyoAni epic that both looks beautiful and caps off the series in a pretty perfect way. It goes from heartbreaking confusion to space-time shenanigans and ends in a swell of emotion that truly gets to the heart of this wild story.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (2018) A beautiful yet heartbreaking story about motherhood, what it means to live, and the memories we will never forget. One of the prettiest anime I've seen, from character designs to the art direction, just awe-inducing. Very good film

Bakemonogatari Tsubasa Cat was the longest arc and ended up as my favorite. My two favorite eps of the season are here ( #12 , #15 ) and the emotional release from Araragi, Hanekawa, and Hitagi was pretty phenomenal. Also cute cat girl so bonus points!

Goodnight Punpun A brilliant manga following the life of a little bird boy. Asano wrote an incredibly layered, absurd, and dense piece of art that made me think about my battle with mental health, my relationships, and my life in general. I loved it.

Bakemonogatari Nadeko Snake while still a good 2 eps of anime ended up being my least favorite arc. Araragi continued to grow on me and I loved Kanbaru's presence, she's such a troll. Nadeko was cute as well but I just didn't feel strongly about the curse plaguing her.

Tamako Love Story - Yamada says this movie is "Tamako standing at the entrance to the universe." It's a love story but as a means to explore change. Stepping into the unknown is scary, but life is short, so climb a tree, yell at the top of your lungs, confess - it is worth it.

Millennium Actress (2001) A beautifully layered story it's almost impossible to convey just how brilliant it was. It's an homage to Japanese film history, it's about the power of memory, and about the chase. Chasing that next day, the next dream. I loved it so much.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night started on an incredible note! Its directed by Ryouhei Takeshita (Heike Mono #9 , Pokemon Pladean Winds) so its in great hands. Production looks stunning and the story about these girls chasing their dreams in this modern internet age seems great.

Sonny Boy #07 - In an upside-down world full of nonsense, one must move forward. Loved this ep as Nagara had to face this challenge alone and reversed his punishment with the help of Futatsuboshi. People are not worker ants, they deserve so much more than false hopes.

Sonny Boy #04 - I played baseball for 10 years so I love baseball eps and this is no different. The way Cap tells the story of the Monkey League is amazing. Ace's envy for not being special while Nagara is seemingly the savior in this world, and that cliffhanger. Pheneomal ep!

Past Lives (2023) The kind of melancholy cinema I eat up. Very strong and heartfelt debut from Celine Song. Loved the use of silence, the actors facial expressions and body language were stellar. It captured that feeling of love, that right person wrong time sensation so well.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This was a ride and I had a lot of fun experiencing it. Sci-fi slice of life with ambitious and absurd storytelling. It had a little bit of everything with a fun cast of characters and at its heart the enigma that is Haruhi.
