McSorley's Old Ale House is celebrating its 170th anniversary this weekend at 15 E. 7th St. There's live music ... with cake from another East Village classic — Veniero's, which is only 130 years old.
When workers removed the bar from the former Grassroots Tavern (1975-2017) on St. Mark's Place last week, they discovered these old murals. I have no idea how old they old. The landmarked building dates to 1832. [Photos by Derek Berg]
After nearly 25 years on Astor Place, Kmart shuttered this location yesterday. Rumors of a closure date to early 2018, though the store ended up downsizing from 3 to 2 floors at the time.

Photographer Peter Bennett, a native NYCer who lived in the East Village from 1979 to 1988, recently shared a stash of street scenes with me from that time period, such as this one from 5th Street at Avenue C.
On Sunday, E. Jay Sims hung a large shirtwaist dress on the top-floor fire escape at 306 Bowery at 1st Street. She mounted the dress in honor of Women's History Month, and in memory of the deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, whose 110th anniversary is March 25.

The Tompkins Square Park holiday tree lighting ceremony took place late this afternoon. As we're told,
@NYCParks
forgot to wire the tree, and so organizers had to scramble to hire an electrician, who missed the bottom portion of the tree. *Perfect!*
The dearly beloved Odessa on Avenue A closes after service on Sunday (7/19). Longtime manager Dennis Vassilatos confirmed the news to
@Joy_of_photos
(who took these pics yesterday). They are shutting down due to the significant loss of business during the COVID-19 crisis.

When a young red-tailed hawk gets stuck in the airshaft outside your kitchen window. An East Village resident made this discovery this morning! The hawk is fine, and with the assistance of Rob M., a park ranger, it is back with its 2 siblings in Tompkins Square Park.
The

at Astor Place — the grocer's first Manhattan outpost — will open on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

got a tour of the under-construction 87,500-square foot space at the landmarked 770 Broadway yesterday. (This retail space was previously Kmart.) 1/2
Dora's return to Tompkins Square Park today wasn't the romantic reunion with Christo that people wanted/needed. In fact, Christo was spotted mating [NSFW] with Nora/Not-Dora, the new red-tailed hawk in this life.
July 11 is the last day for Ink, the 33-yr-old newsstand at 66 Ave A in the East Village. Owner Benny Dahud has been in a legal tussle w/ the private equity firm that bought the bldg last fall. So Benny has decided to retire.📷 by

The dear old Mars Bar closed for good 10 years ago today: July 18, 2011. For a period of time, the place was the greatest, strangest, dirtiest bar around the East Village. Thanks for the memories!
The
@nypost
put the Christo-Dora-Nora/Not-Dora red-tailed hawk love triangle on the cover today below the
@TheAcademy
preview. (Working on the screen-play now.)

The Cube (aka Alamo) is back on Astor Place (as of last night) after spending the past 2-plus months in the shop. It had been out of commission since December 2021. The spinning mechanism for the Cube, which manually rotates around a pole hidden in its center, wasn't working. 1/2
Update: the alarm on the BMW outside Sophie’s at 507 E. 5th St. near Avenue A in the East Village is still going off — now 24 hours in. People egged the car, stole the NJ plates and left a passive-aggressive note.
Ugh. Another setback for B&H Dairy in the East Village: the high winds ripped off the diner’s awning and smashed into its small outdoor space. It has been a struggle this year for the 80-year-old lunch counter, including a break-in & vandalized front window.
NYC old-timer Pete's Tavern reopens today (8/10) at 4 p.m. at 129 E. 18th St. & Irving Place. They have been closed since March 2020.
(Thx to Michael Quinn for the tip!)
'Stomp' ended its 29-yr run on Sunday. Yesterday, workers discarded some props, which were up for grabs on the curb around the Orpheum Theatre on 2nd Ave b/t 7th Street and St. Mark's Place. There may be a few 'Stomp' souvenirs left. [Pics from yesterday]

Word is circulating about an assault outside Ray's Candy Store on Avenue A that left Ray Alvarez, the shop's 90-year-old proprietor, with a black eye and a gash on his temple. Here's what we know so far:
Bleecker Street Bar's 30-year tenure on the corner of Bleecker & Crosby is coming to an end on Aug. 30. "All of our efforts to negotiate a reasonable lease extension with our landlord have failed."
Today in the East Village,
@Marvel
brought the
@disneyplus
series 'Hawkeye' to 4th Street, complete with in-costume leads Hailee Steinfeld & Jeremy Renner — and Lucky the Pizza Dog! (Who's a good boy?!)
