Well, the news is out there: I’m taking over
@ColHockeyNow
. This is a big change for me, but I’ve got huge plans for the site, bringing the Avs coverage everyone wants. It’ll feel good to be back in the press box and in the locker room covering the team daily.
The Avs are on a five day bender and don’t look like they’re slowing down at all.
Bednar had this team in tip-top shape for everything. Coach of the year.
Ryan Johansen and Ross Colton, the new 2 and 3C’s, will cost the Avs $8M this year.
J.T. Compher and Alex Newhook signed contracts with their new teams for a combined total of…$8M.
Last night, and this entire postseason, have proven that Gabriel Landeskog is everything to this team.
You put him on any line, that line automatically just works. He’s the safety blanket for all of his linemates.
Kadri can’t take faceoffs? Landeskog steps in and dominates.
Just happy for Erik Johnson. Committed to the organization, fought through hell to come back and play a big role in this Cup run.
Always a pleasure to speak to in the locker room.
Bowen Byram in round 2:
67.02% ES shot share (
#1
on team)
79.31% ES high danger chance share (
#1
on team)
5 assists (3 primary, tied for team lead)
18 shots on goal
He has arrived.
Remember immediately after the Game 7 loss to San Jose with the offsides call, how Gabe Landeskog stood in front of everyone and took the blame?
Some leaders are built a little different.
Jordan Eberle avoids a hearing because the man he hit from behind into the boards is the most indestructible player in the NHL.
Most dangerous hit in hockey.
Sam Girard will return tomorrow. I asked him how important it was for him to be as open and honest as he was with his statement. Great answer from him.
“I was tired of hiding everything.”
A simple reminder that Valeri Nichushkin is a bigger addition than anyone the Avs can possibly trade for.
Last year, they were 39-8-6 with him, and 12-16-1 without him.
This year, they're 26-11-3 with him, and 9-8-2 without him.
The Lightning did not register a single shot attempt in game two when either Nikita Kucherov or Victor Hedman were on the ice against Devon Toews and Cale Makar.
Nazem Kadri on the racist threats to TNT -
“Unfortunately I’ve been dealing with that for a long time. It’s sad to say, but that’s just the fact of the matter.”
Said it’s a big deal but tries to act like it’s not.
“For those that hate, that was for them.”
Just a quick announcement on my part…
I will be stepping away from the Avs beat for a little while. Tomorrow, my daughter is having her third hip surgery, as she was born with hip dysplasia. She’ll be casted and immobile for 6 weeks, so I need to focus on taking care of her.
"When MacKinnon's line gets out there with Makar and Toews ... that's not the NHL. That's another league."
Sheldon Keefe with about as high of praise as you can give for the Avs top guns 🎙️
Bowness on the Avs...
"Their intensity and their speed went way up from the regular season. They've won a Stanley Cup, and it showed itself this series."
I know the Avalanche made other moves, but the Mittelstadt/Johansen swap at the center ice position looks gargantuan already.
They're back to having all four lines that can skate and play the way they want to play.
Who cares if someone is a fairweather fan? Seriously, who cares? People have lives outside of hockey.
And if you become a hockey fan because of a run like this, great! There’s room for everyone.
You can’t grow the game if you immediately dismiss the non-diehards.
I did get to the bottom of one thing today - Why Devon Toews sits on the floor.
He said you sit on the bench or chairs so much with your legs at 90 degrees, that it’s a nice change-up to sit on the floor and stretch your legs out.

If you plan on being a contender, you simply can't let a defenseman like this walk for nothing.
There will always be concerns signing someone late into their 30's, but Devon Toews is a top flight defenseman in this league.
There are multiple youth teams in town from out of state. Cale Makar just stopped, took pictures with a ton of them, and chatted them up.
One of them walked away saying “Cale freaking Makar”
Nathan MacKinnon is WIRING pucks top shelf this morning.
Even the handful of Devils players watching the Avs skate let out an audible gasp on one of his shots.
Also, important to note that the Avalanche are actually GAINING cap space with these moves.
Both Mittelstadt and Walker make less than the guys they were traded for.
Yakov Trenin told me about how he housed young Russian players in Nashville for full summers to help them adjust to NA.
He said he’s meeting Kovalenko tonight for dinner at Ivan Prosvetov’s house.
He opposing team has not registered a shot on net against the Avs at even strength with Darren Helm on the ice in two of the last three games.
Can’t ask for much more from a fourth liner.
I don’t know if the Avs can afford Jonathan Drouin after this year, but whatever he gets, he’s earned it.
The growth of his all-around game has been wild to watch.
Josh Manson should be good to go for Tuesday, and we’ll await word on Makar (I anticipate him playing), but if he does, the Avs will dress all of Makar, Toews, Byram, Girard, and Manson in the same game for the first time since November 4.
That’s 165 days.
Justus Annunen with his second straight shutout of the Blackhawks.
Yes, they’re bad. Very bad. But you can only play who they put you out there against, and he’s doing his thing. 60 straight saves.
5-0 Avalanche win.
