Good morning. Our gritter drivers have been busy this weekend. All primary routes have been treated and we've used over 1,000 tonnes of salt on the roads. Gritting the roads reduces the risk of snow and ice but doesn't remove it completely so please drive to the conditions.
GRITTERS ARE OFF: Our gritters are just leaving their depots now. Please remember that gritting the roads does not instantly remove all ice and snow from the roads. Please do continue to take care and drive to the conditions of the road.
❄️ GRITTING DECISION ❄️
⚠️We will be treating primary routes from 4pm (16/01) and again from 4am (17/01).

And they're off....our gritters are just leaving the depot for the night. Did you know it takes 2 hours for each gritter to complete its route? Keep your eyes peeled and give them a wave if you see them out tonight!
Our gritters have been busy overnight, gritting at 1am, 4:15am and will back out at 7:30am. We will keep you updated today of any further action. Please do take care if out on the roads today.
GRITTING DECISION: A busy night ahead... We'll be gritting all primary routes at 7pm, followed by all secondary routes. We'll then be gritting primary routes again at 4am.

We gritted over 20,000km of road during the Beast from the East's visit last week. That's the equivalent of travelling from London to New York 4 times!
Our gritters will be out tonight at 7pm - don't worry, the weather isn't turning. Our drivers are going on a test run before our winter season starts. We do this every year to check that routes are clear. If you see our gritters out then give them a wave 🖐️

Are you deer aware? 🦌
Deer cross the roads all year round. Their presence peaks in April to May when young deer are born and from October to November for the autumn mating season. Take particular care at dawn and dusk.
Completed work at Nutley (Ashdown Forest). Verge areas are recycled from local forestry stockpiles, and hardstanding areas are recycled from other live schemes (excavated from other carriageway sites and re-used instead of being disposed of).

Last month Storm Bella came through East Sussex. Our emergency team attended 56 calls between Christmas Day and 28th Dec as a result of the storm. This included 37 fallen trees and 10 flooded roads. Our team work 24/7 to ensure the roads are safe and open.
Our teams are still working to keep the road network safe and available for those key workers who need it. They are working safely to current guidelines and keeping their distance from each other and the public. Please do the same and keep a safe distance from those working.
At East Sussex Highways staff have the opportunity to take 2 days carrying out Volunteering works. We had 5 members help with gardening at the Bluebell Railway.

About 26 hectares of verges in East Sussex are designated as Wildlife Verges which we manage for the special wildlife they support. We are also working with local voluntary wildflower groups who raise local awareness of the benefits of flower rich verges.

We have over 900 grit bins in East Sussex. If it's safe to do so, you can use the grit to help clear ice and snow on untreated roads. A list of grit bin locations can be found here:
East Sussex has 26 hectares of wildlife verges. Look out for the yellow flower sign which shows an area has been designated as a protected wildlife verge. We periodically survey these sites to check what wildlife is present.

The Cuilfail Tunnel was cleaned successfully on Friday 8 September.
This is done quarterly to maintain the lighting conditions through the tunnel by maximising the reflectiveness of the enamel wall panels.
Other essential inspections and maintenance was carried out.

We have 133 wildlife verges across East Sussex. Many species of wildflowers are currently under threat of extinction so it's important to encourage diversity and protect these species whenever we can.

Since the 1930’s, 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows have been lost. This has had a big effect on pollinating insects. Encouraging wildflowers to bloom along verges in East Sussex can help protect many species of pollinators and encourage wildlife to flourish.
#protectthebees
Gritting at the right time is crucial. We use the latest weather forecasting tech and monitor road surface temps to help us decide where/when to grit. We aim to grit the roads before frost/ice are formed, this is often in the evening or early morning.
