I really appreciate everyone who has helped me and Yas get the word out about Love in the Library, but there's something that I'd like to clarify:
Often, copy will say something "this shameful chapter" in American history or "this dark time" to refer to Japanese incarceration.
OK. No more subtweeting. This is what happened. Full story at the link.
I'm so disappointed and furious and unsurprised. But I also have receipts.
Scholastic wanted to feature my book, but ONLY if I censored the word RACISM from the author's note.
THE PROPHESY HAS COME TRUE, a white person has gotten mad at me for saying racism is an American tradition in the author's note of my book about my grandparents meeting in a *checks note* Japanese incarceration camp
I just got this message on IG and was given permission to share it.
I try not to be too self important, but like. These books fucking matter. She was horrified. She deserved to know. She wasn't protected as a child when no one told her. They were just setting her up.
my favorite james patterson story is that, at my first BEA, i got seated next to the editor in chief of a very large trade review magazine, who proceeded to get white wine drunk at lunch and spend the whole hour we had to chat ranting about what an asshole jp is.
i was rivited.
I wrote about why, even after the apology and the offer to license my book in its full form, I still said no to Scholastic.
I am still gutted to reject a great opportunity. But I'm still sure I'm doing the right thing.
An author was offered a deal with Scholastic, the largest children’s book publisher, but asked to remove references to racism. She refused. The case became an example of how the debate around book banning in schools has reached publishers.
Development through kidlit categories:
Picture books: oh my gosh, the world!
Early reader: it’s huge!
Middle grade: wait, it’s dark and complicated, good thing there’s adults
YA: wait, I’M dark and complicated AND I can’t trust adults, I should fix this!
Adult: lol nm
apparently he complained to this editor, often and vociferously, about the lack of coverage for his books.
"what does he want from us?" the editor moaned. "all his books are the same! BAD!"
imagine my delight.
anyway, i think about that story every time my book gets any trade review, but especially a starred one.
sometimes, you don't getgood reviews / the jobs you want bc your mediocrity has finally caught up with you.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that you will never sound less intelligent than when you’re trying to compliment an author you *really like* face to face
I'm getting a lot of really lovely support and solidarity, which I am so grateful for.
And for those who'd like action items:
1. Tell Scholastic how you feel about this.
2. Buy books by POC authors.
3. Support groups like
@PENamerica
that fight censorship / book banning.
There's a difference btwn: wow I'm personally disappointed a cop has been named the VP candidate, but I'm still voting dem bc I get that literally ANYTHING is better
and
Kamala is a cop guess I'm not voting
Like... we can see and acknowledge the dif yes ???
I disagree with this framing.
It implies that the era in which the United States does not wrongfully incarcerate people (incl children) based on their race is over. And it simply is not.
Mass incarceration is a uniquely American phenomenon and policy. And it's very current.
To be clear this doesn't mean she doesn't deserve criticism? She does! Pls don't tag me in arguments about that????
Just that there are some people ready to make wildly false equivalences and I don't have the energy for them
And if that connection feels too far a walk for you (it's not but I don't feel like arguing) then our borders provide a harrowing example as well.
We have never stopped punishing marginalized people in this country. We have never stopped enforcing white supremacist laws.
In my author's note and in my presentations I give to schools I am very clear on this point, and I continually catch bad feedback for it.
But I wasn't interested in telling this story to affirm white folks that things worked out ok in the end. That's not the point.
Also Love in the Library wasn't banned. Scholastic wanted to censor it in order to sell it to a larger audience. They're the same issue at their core, but details are important.
And it doesn't need to BE banned. This history has already been hidden and erased enough.
I wrote it so that I could talk to kids about the harm that these policies do. And so that I could talk to them about how, even despite all that, marginalized people find joy, because we're just that powerful.
But that doesn't seem to be what white readers want to hear.
Deciding to write a rhyming picture book is like deciding that gymnastics is too easy and adding a fire element
Great when you nail it, but man, you better make sure you're practiced AF in gymnastics before you get on those uneven bars that you lit on fire

Raise your hand if you think
@Scholastic
's CEO, Peter Warwick, should donate his $1.25m annual bonus to the fight against censorship-- maybe even directly to educators and librarians actually fighting this fight.
(Don't worry he'll still have $2m of his yearly salary left)
That framing, that this was a time so long ago, an aberrant moment in history, belies that lie; that racism is in the past. That we're better than that now. We're not.
So: this is not to say anyone who used that framing is wrong. This is just something I've been thinking about.
I love and appreciate everyone who's checked in on me, but I also think it's worth saying:
I don't feel extra sad or furious that this time the victims were Asian. I'm this furious and sad every time someone is killed by white supremacy.
This is just what happens here.
February 18th, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which put American citizens like my grandparents into incarceration camps during WWII.
I tell their true story in my newest book with
@yasimamura
, which you can preorder now.
I really don't mean to chastise people-- this isn't part of some larger conversation you didn't know about, it is simply something I've been reflecting on with each new complaint I get for being frank.
Capitulating to book banners, taking a passive role in this fight, and outsourcing courage to educators and librarians is, imo, cowardly at best and actively aiding the rise of fascism at worst.
A dereliction of duty as a billion dollar publisher.
I am so grateful to Candlewick in this mess. They've diverted people on staff to help me manage media, talked through decisions with me, and have helped at every stage.
And as always, Yas is the greatest partner I could have asked for. Her talent is what makes this book work.
I have gotten a lot of mail about how it wasn't racism that put Japanese Americans into incarceration camps. Listen.
Republican President Ronald Reagan is the one who authorized the payment of reparations to Japanese Americans. And this is what he said then:
yesterday I got to present Love in the Library to kids, and it was so good for my stupid little heart.
kids are smart. kids are capable. kids deserve the truth.
thank you
@Candlewick
, for the chance to tell this story in all its fullness and complexity.
I signed this letter, and was deeply proud to do so. I do not disavow my Jewishness in this moment, but rather embrace the best of what it has taught me: to question authority, to stand with the oppressed, to value all human life.
Please take a moment to read it if you can.
“We are Jewish writers, artists, and activists who wish to disavow the widespread narrative that any criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic.” New: an open letter.
So, we lost my Uncle Butchie to covid.
He was extremely dear, severely developmentally disabled, and easily the kindest heart in our family.
My mother wrote a perfect obituary of him here:
And if you're willing I'd love to ask something of you

Today is the 76th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, ordering American citizens of Japanese descent to report to internment camps.
Just a reminder that as a nation, we have a terrible track record of correctly pinpointing who and what are true threats to our safety.
I just realized that the two biggest crushes of my middle school years have so much in common that one got cast as the other on SNL and if that ain't bisexuality I don't know what is
My weird, queer, hapa YA fantasy novel has a home.
I wrote probably 75% of the 1st draft for
#NaNoWriMo
last year, so keep writing I guess. Most of that 1st draft is gone, but man all that hard work and whining feels a lot more useful now.

I just wanted to say, as a literary hottie, I am available for sensitivity reads on books with characters who are 10s.
I can't speak for the 9s community.
I stand in complete and total solidarity with the striking workers of
@Scholastic
, who are asking for fair wages and for the publishing giant to stand by their ideals at the bargaining table and at their book fairs.
I lost a very dear friend yesterday. She was one of the smartest and toughest humans I've ever known.
And in order to honor her in the way I think she'd get a kick out of, a story, and also a dare:
I just want A League if Their Own to get the kind of love Our Flag Means Death got, pls bring on all the horny fan art, the extremely close readings, the love for breakout stars
this whole interaction was so interesting to me. she lives in WA state now, so her whole life she's been surrounded by this history and yet.
she heard about this book bc of

's video, which had been posted to a local indigenous education group's IG page.

if you're in the mood to decolonize your imagination and get hella queer with some mermaids and stuff, may I recommend my book The Mermaid, The Witch, and the Sea?
It's .99 on your Kindle right now, and also you buying it will make me feel nice.
she said that one time she'd heard of the incarceration of some Japanese people in passing in a larger discussion about Pearl Harbor.
So weird how LEADING w the state line of justification (which they admitted later was based on NOTHING) minimizes and effectively erases history.
I am reading this incredibly upsetting history of violence perpetrated by the British Empire, and I keep being struck by how extra demeaning it is to be tortured and murdered by people with names like Lord Beaverbrook, Mr. Hardbottom, and Lord Pickles
We seem to consistently forget that you can rip on Trump in a million ways without ever being fatphobic. To help, I'm creating a handy list you can refer to if you'd like to insult him:
1.) he wants to fuck his eldest daughter
2.) he's never met his younger daughter
🎉🎉🎉 the news is out! The text I wrote about lady samurais is coming 2024, with illustrations by the magnificent

My mom used to have us draw Christmas cards to send out and one year when I was like 14 I did one that said "save a tree, eat a beaver" and SHE SENT IT OUT WITHOUT TELLING ME WHAT THAT ALSO MEANS anyway it's good advice
I've been sitting on this secret for so long!!! I know most of you haven't gotten to meet the girls yet but here's hoping you get to see them on TV, too 🐺🌕
I'm in tears.
@FolioSF
(women owned, incredible, indie) is doing a sales drive of LOVE IN THE LIBRARY. If you buy one, they'll buy one, and they'll donate it to a local school. Link below.
I wrote this book FOR schools.
I have so many thoughts, and you know what I'm gonna do with them, put them in a little box and throw that box into the ocean where it belongs, not everyone's thoughts are helpful or necessary 🤗
This is my baby. He thinks you should preorder my debut novel, The Mermaid The Witch and The Sea.

hello fellow authors and illustrators, if you think
@Scholastic
's "separate but equal" book fair plan is, perhaps, a BAD idea, please consider signing this open letter to them about it:
my life has been an absolute fire hose for the last month, and so I haven't had a sec to flex:
both my first books have earned out. I didn't think it'd happen for Also an Ocotpus, such a weird little book. Mermaid, the Witch and The Sea, earned out how?
But I'm really proud.
I asked earlier how people learned about the holocaust and it's 400+ responses later it's almost entirely from movies and kids' novels (if there weren't journalists, historians or survivors in the family)
