It moved me to tears to hear
@BernieSanders
talk about his father escaping anti-semitism in Poland. The Jewish story the media shows so rarely reflects the stories of so many of our families; high-profile Jews are too often either Israel-loving fanatics or wealthy bankers/lawyers
Sen. Bernie Sanders at a campaign rally delivers some of his most deeply personal remarks: "Coming from a lower-middle-class family, I will never forget about how money, or really, lack of money was always a point of stress in our family"
So many of my Jewish friends have expressed that Bernie reminds them of their grandparents, but with better politics. The wild thing is that Bernie’s tradition of Jewishness — universalist and socialist — was a dominant force in American Judaism for much of the 20th century.
It mirrors the Jewishness of my grandmother, who was a card-carrying Communist and lobbyist for the AFL and died before I could get to know her. So for me, Bernie feels like the grandparent I never knew.

@BernieSanders
EXACTLY. My grandfather was a free speech lawyer who hated communists — named Bernie — so the stereotype holds true for me. But so many Jews of their generation were socialists.

@BernieSanders
Wow. Can almost hear him saying “fehh” after mentioning the Holocaust and then with a wave of his hand, moving on. So many of us can relate.
