It took me bringing up pay to my peers in private for us to figure it out. (Higher ups definitely didn’t like that) They had more leverage to ask for a raise because of it, and I’m glad I said something. It made me realize how blatant this shit is when you pay attention.

It’s very uncomfortable knowing your coworkers, who are working just as hard, get less. There’s power in talking about pay. All of us should get our money from these companies. I have no problem being the one to volunteer my income if it means people get what they’re worth.

Here’s the thing. Indie animation and the industry are NOT interchangeable. People need to pay their rent, and people who say animation industry folks should leave their jobs to make indie projects are uninformed at best. That being said, I hope people can learn to support both.

Revisionists are not “under” storyboarders. It’s a different job entirely, and it’s an important one. Revisionists are not under boarders on the show “hierarchy”, and can sometimes even work more with the directors/producers than the boarders do.

I’ll start! Follow up emails are GOOD! If you connect with a recruiter after a review or job interview, it’s okay to update them in a few months on changes/updates. I was so afraid of annoying people that I accidentally ghosted people early on lol. Sometimes emails get missed!

I want to find a way to make indie internships someday. It'd take a lot of logistical work, but I'd love to create a short that ONLY employs new artists. Give them their first experience in the pipeline. Something created entirely by artists that just needed that first gig!

Hot take… I think “deviantART OC” character designs are good and fun, actually. And I’m tired of pretending it’s not. Smash all the design tropes you like into the most Mary Sue self insert ever. Life is too short to not be self indulgent and edgy and weird with your characters

Anyways, my hot take is we could all afford to adopt the “holy shit two cakes” mentality a bit more about indie projects. Multiple shows/comics about witches, aliens, or anything else? Holy shit, you get two stories, from unique creators, making you content out of passion! 🎉

I started on HB in August of 2020. I applied to be an animator, but my skills weren't quite there yet... But Viv gave me a chance to try for a cleanup position, which I got. Since then I worked in cleanup, compositing and storyboarding on the team and I have learned SO much.
