Having accidentally enraged the entirety of South India (and its omnipresent diaspora) on twitter, it was only right to order idlis for lunch. I'm very sorry to report that my unpopular - or "blasphemous", as some have said - opinion remains unchanged.

For the record, the sambar and chutney were good. And I still adore almost all of the wonderful cuisine of south India. Thanks to Newcastle's Malayali restaurant, Ury, for the idlis. I may not have finished them, but the delicious fish curry, dosa and payasam were devoured.

Nice - you show you don’t have to swallow any culture or belief system in its entirety to respect it. You can take some and leave some. A good tutorial on independent & critical thinking, with a respectful refusal to back down to collective internet bullying. Brave man indeed. 👏

We also have other great sides to offer like, Chutney-Powder (Podi) and Tomato Chutney.
Next time you join us, we would love to introduce you to some other killer-combos.
We are pleased to hear that you are a fan of our Dosa and Fish Curry. :)

one must give idlis the right to be spoken for. Edward I invite you to my home. You will never hate idlis after u have the ones made by my mom. If you happen to be in Mumbai let me know.
@edanderson101
On the contrary, I think you brought some much needed attention to the other Kerala dishes that are 1000x better than Idli! I hope more people try those dishes from reputable Keralite chefs. Thank you!
@edanderson101
The trick to enjoy idlis is in having the right combination of idli + chutney. Perhaps you tried to eat idli without any sides. Try to learn by watching how others eat idlis. As of now you are like one of those fabulous blind men who tried to understand how an elephant was like.
@edanderson101
:) Idli is best eaten when steaming hot, with ghee (hot as well) & with different types of chutney (coconut, ginger are a good combo) & sambhar.
Hot Ghee will turn a normal idli into rockstar idli :)
