Today’s #TrainOfTheDay is London Underground’s “Rail Adhesion Train”, formed of former 1962 passenger stock, making its annual transfer move from its summer home at Ruislip depot, to the east end of the Central line where it will work throughout the forthcoming ‘slippy season’.

The Central line has two ‘RAT’s; this 8-car train operates at the east end of the line, and a 5-car train which operates at the west end of the line. They only cover the open-air parts of the line which is why their trips through central London are rare!

One car in each train contains equipment which puts a substance called ‘Sandite’ on the rails to help trains grip rails made slippery by leaf fall.

The Metropolitan line has converted D Stock as its RATs, these replaced A Stock which had been used previously

The Chiltern line NR water-jetting train (another technique used to combat leaf fall) also covers the parts of LU used by Chiltern!

@driverbod125 Out of curiosity, do any of your correspondents know if it’s fitted with Central Line signalling kit, or does it have to work under special arrangements?

@driverbod125 Why is it so long? The kit seems to be confined to the first couple of carriages. Why drag the extra mass? Or is this a signalling thing?
