@sasha_zabelski I don’t think a PhD really corresponds to earning power. To be distinguished in a field of knowledge is great, but many times jobs that are desirable don’t necessarily generate lots of money for the employer. They can’t ignore economic factors and keep their ship afloat.

My impression is that this surgeon is referring to an MD who now works for an insurance company after having their medical license restricted. It’s not an uncommon scenario in our system, because responsibility does not correspond to competency.
