Working hard to conserve the nature in my area.Promoting the importance of wild-flowers and pollinators to all other life. Litter removal on a large scale!
I am pleased to confirm that, as of today, this jewel of a small
#meadow
is now mine! Photos from 2018/19. It has deteriorated due to no grazing, but that will be sorted out over winter & it will be safe for future generations.

I feel so very fortunate to have bought & protected this beautiful Irish rainforest. It is the result of many years of natural processes & it's very intricate, with so many species of flora & fauna. It is an oasis of calm.
Didn't dare dream that this woodland, which was for sale, could ever be mine! But today, the deal is done, & I am the new guardian!!!! Red squirrel & Hare spotted, Fox & badger present.
This is my ex silage field. 5 years on. It has exceeded all my expectations, & then some. No need to sow wildflower seeds, they are in the soil waiting for an opportunity to flower.
#Dontmow
cut & lift. Reduce soil fertility to create better conditions for wildflowers.
I really didn't expect to see a Ferret when checking the cattle today. Poor thing was so cold, it walked into the cardboard box & was very friendly & gentle. Currently in my living room warming up.
Just visited an old friend in his late 80's. He used to strim this "rough" area of his garden. I advised him to chill out & let it grow to see what would come. 1yr on & it's full of Northern marsh orchids, Ox-eye daisies,Self-heal, Red clover...He loves it & so do the goslings!
I cycled along this road which was absolutely humming with insects & had lots of Cinnabar
#moth
caterpillars.
#wildflowerhour
Long may it remain uncut!
It's impossible to convey in a photograph just how many thousands of
#orchids
there are in this incredible old
#meadow
near
#Swatragh
just as it's impossible to explain how much joy it brings.
WHY is there no law against this? Long stretches of country road sprayed off, wildflowers obliterated by a land owner.
@daera_ni
Serving no purpose. Clearly herbicide is too easily available & not nearly expensive enough!
#ecocide
Hugely reassuring to know that intensively farmed land can be returned to something more akin to what it might have been a century ago!
#wildflowerhour
7 years on from being an Italian ryegrass silage field.
#wildflowermeadow
It's difficult to imagine what might grow in your garden if you stop mowing it weekly. There's only one way to find out.
#Dontmowletitgrow
I now have over 1000 Common spotted orchids in my "lawn". While neighbours labour with mowers for hrs in Spring/Summer, I'm enjoying wildlife
Coleraine area, awash with the most beautiful display of Cuckoo flower! Also lots of
#dandelions
which weren't opened up yet this morning.

Disturbed this young fox in one of my meadows. I think this is his first time seeing a human. He hid & played peek-a-boo several times, standing up on his hind legs!
My ex-silage field has now been flowering for 5 months. It is a haven for wildlife. Converting intensive farmland to native wildflower meadow, has been the most rewarding experience. 1/2
I think I've seen all the possible variations in Devil's bit scabious today! 1st ever Yellow one for me, White, Lilac, Pale blue, Deep blue. And what an array of invertebrate life associated with this incredibly important late season flower.
#wildflowerhour
It only takes 1 litter lout to trash a place. This wasn't here when I went up the road 20 mins ago, it's not there any more either, because I lifted it,but this is really sickening. They purchased it 40miles away, yesterday, & somehow it seemed appropriate to chuck it here today.
My ex-silage field, 8 yrs on, this
#meadow
usually peaks end of June/ early July. For now, it's alive with Yellow rattle, Red clover, Ox-eye daisies & Common sorrel. The Red clover smells incredible in the evening sunshine. So good to see & hear
#bumblebees
& other
#pollinators
Met this wonderful,industrious man in Inver
#Donegal
who litter picks the beach & shore where he lives, every day. Single handed he gathers bagfuls of plastic/rope/net & removes it all to protect the wildlife of the sea. What an inspiration. Local hero

More road verges like this please! Absolutely stunning place, & despite this beauty, some local residents are mowing the verges outside their homes.
#dontmow
#willweeverlearn
Since moving to my home 20 yrs ago, new housing and associated mowing of verges has deprived locsl wildlife of vital food snd shelter. So I decided to create a new verge, yardside verge,no chance of untimely mowing, and full of life. Locally gathered seed sowed directly,job done
Last yr a beautiful grassland near me became a building site.I knew there were Early purple orchids there and they would be lost forever. I approached the owner and asked if I could rescue the remaining orchids which hadn't been buried. Today I found the rosettes in my gdn!
Rescued from a building site, this absolutely stunning Pyramidal orchid seems to have settled in well on my sandy solitary bee bank! It would have been buried under concrete by now, had it not been removed.
Speaking today to a lady who is doing so much to help wildlife. So refreshing. Manages this verge outside her house & her garden to maximise wildflowers for insects to boost the food supply for her many House martins! Joining up the dots.
My 5 acre
#meadow
project. From intensive farming to
#meadow
The bees are loving the Yellow Rattle & clover as much as I am! Common spotted orchids coming up all through it, but no flowers yet. Swathe of Lesser trefoil. The grasses are changing with Sweet vernal grass now coming.
This regularly mowed lawn is bursting with flowers. I stopped to chat to the lady who owns it, it was due to be mowed tonight! After a discussion & seeing how many
#bumblebees
& Meadow brown butterflies were in it, she has decided to delay mowing for a few weeks! Happy days!
When you drive past a gorgeous meadow which, up until very recently, used to be managed as very short grass & you feel overjoyed! I'd like to thank
@NationalTrustNI
for making my day.Please retweet if you think NT have made the right decision!

Bishop's Gate.
Celebrating 1 year on from purchasing this piece of perfection. I was told today someone else had thought of purchasing it to 'develop' it! Incredible to think anyone could see this & think I must destroy it!
#NoPlanetB
#biodiversitycrisis
I find it completely baffling that people living on a road which has the best display of woodland flora, are mowing the flowers for many metres, each side of their home entrance. How can they not see the beauty of Wood anemone, Greater stitchwort,Bluebells, Violets,Primroses?
Having talked my brother into
#NoMowMay
with his lawn,he's sold on the idea & has talked his neighbour into not mowing the
#verge
outside his house as it's full of Selfheal, Clover, Daisies & Buttercups. It's humming with
#bumblebees
too! Go out there & persuade ppl to
#dontmow
So today I saw my first ever roosting Long eared owl! It was a great day. Thanks to John for taking the time to show me, no way I would have spotted it high up in this Scot's Pine.
Thread. Since the owner doesn't use the
#meadow
& sees no value in it, he has agreed to sell it to me! I can't believe that I will now be able to look after this place & ensure it is never destroyed! So, so happy!

@BCNI_
@BuglifeNI
This magnificent
#Hawthorn
self seeded in my yard. It has the most delicious scent & the flowers are weighing it down. The insects are swarming all over it & it is a joy to see & smell. Relatives can't believe I would allow it to grow like this! It could scratch the car!
I photographed these verges a few days ago, when there was lots of Rosebay willowherb in flower. Today, all flailed & this beautiful Elephant hawkmoth caterpillar was barely alive in the middle of the road! My 1st sighting of this
#moth
caterpillar this year.
Despite our attempts to keep the wild places we visit free from litter & fly tipping, repeat offenders with no appreciation of beauty/ nature/ wildlife constantly trash the areas. It's soul destroying.
So glad I introduced Navelwort to the stone wall in my back yard. Such a fabulous sight. Not widely occurring in the countryside near me unfortunately.
4 yrs ago a monoculture Ryegrass! Crop baled off, Yellow rattle sowed,ryegrass gone, meadow grasses coming & the most incredible crop of Common spotted orchids & Red clover. This gives me such hope for the recovery of nature in the absence of intensive practices.
#wildflowerhour
So happy that all the Early purple
#orchids
I rescued from a building site/beautiful old grassland, have made it to flowering this year.
#wildflowerhour
I know of no logical reason why a yard can't be home to
#wildflowers
given the lack of wildflowers in the wider countryside, I am doing all in my power to feed the local
#insect
population, after all, they are crucial to the food chain! Ridiculous to spray/mow/flail their food!
Totally blown away by the wildflower spectacle in
#Donegal
Gardens & verges spilling over with native wildflowers. The most beautiful county in Ireland. Well done
@donegalcouncil
for allowing the verges to grow, a haven for wildlife, a joy for the public.
#Allirelandpollinatorplan
I can't imagine just how uninteresting my garden would be if it was managed as lawn instead of
#meadow
The diversity of plant, insect & bird species provides endless entertainment & enjoyment. The sounds of nature are all around, bees buzzing, birds singing, a hive of activity.
This child has visited the wildflowers in Kilrea, for several yrs now.
@NIHousing
When they visited this week,it was to this scene! Why do you take a beautiful, vibrant area,full of colour & life & reduce it to this mess? Are you aware of the biodiversity crisis?
#wildflowerhour
Housemartin nest envy! So great to stand & watch the constant stream of birds, to & fro, feeding chicks at this amazing property. I love the call of Housemartins, such beautiful birds. Ready made nests at my house remain unused, sadly!
This verge was full of flowers! Even the grass beside it would be preferable! What makes people do this? The sooner Glyphosate is banned for general, indiscriminate use, the better.
Admiring these stunning Forget-me-nots in a woman's garden. She was annoyed that she hasn't been able to get rid of them! They being "weeds" apparently. I am quite convinced the world has gone mad & lost all it's good taste!
#wildflowerhour
Met this lovely,industrious lady today.For yrs I have seen evidence of her work,but never knew who she was until this evening. She clears miles of road every week.On my return journey,the roadverges she had cleared were already splattered with fast food take away rubbish!
If only every village & town could announce itself thus, verges packed with native

A welcome sight to greet travellers & locals alike.
My back meadow garden basking in the evening sun. Buttercups, Yellow rattle, Red Clover & Ragged Robin. Greater Bird's foot trefoil about to flower. Bumblebees working away in it.
#meadows
It's been a full 3 months since this
#hedge
was last flailed. This is how the ball starts rolling here.Everyone else along the rd will now feel it necessary to cut their out of control hedges!Bird nesting season?What bird nesting season?
@daera_ni
The verges are cut too.
#Ecocide
The sheer density of flowers & bumblebees in my ex-silage field, now
#meadow
is therapy beyond compare. This was made possible by cutting & baling off at end of summer for past 5 yrs & addition of Yellow rattle, aka meadow-maker. Surrounding land devoid of flowers, ryegrass!
