as some of you may remember, during the off season, I was working on a cycling novella set in the EPO era. After many revisions, I've finally finished it:
The people who introduced deranged and violent transphobia into cycling during a time when transgender people face unprecedented persecution and state-sponsored violence have no place in our sport, don’t actually care about women’s sport, and should be ashamed of themselves.
in retrospect lockdown was truly a wild time. like how did i only eat cereal for a whole week in order to devote 9 hour days to painting a photorealistic portrait of tadej pogačar
this and EF are literally the only team jerseys that are working within the visual languages of contemporary graphic design. everyone else is working in styles from - I kid you not - five to ten years ago.
I wrote about Primož Roglič, his Giro victory, the burden of stories, and what might be one of the greatest redemption arcs ever to be gleaned in sport:
I have 0 tolerance for transphobia and if you pick a fight with me on this issue I’ll go into it with the unconquerable confidence of knowing I’m on the right side of history. Trans people have been members of my community for my entire adult life and I will defend them full stop
all i will say on this as a journalist is that people who perform as media outlets and get designated press access at events (whether they label themselves as journalists or not) should disclose conflicts of interest before not after the fact. that's basic ethics, sorry.
The reason you don’t hear fearmongering about trans men in sport is because of old fashioned misogyny — the idea that women are inherently weaker than men and are precious and need to be protected. That is not liberation. It’s not feminism. It’s literally the opposite.
lol at roglič throwing a molotov cocktail in the team's nice slaphappy kumbaya moment by being like "idk about all this" in the post-race interview while a team swannie gets beat down by cops. this vuelta is insane
my take on remco is the same as pogačar, anyone who hates him needs to balance that with how fucking boring things would start being without either of them
In my latest profile, I sat down with Tadej Pogačar for a long chat about grief, loss, the Tour, a better world, cycling getting faster and younger, the long view of his incredible career and just about anything you could think to ask him
The end result of transphobia is the policing of all female bodies including cisgendered ones, esp in sports. It’s getting the cops called on you for going to the toilet with short hair or small breasts. It’s the rigid enforcement gender roles and gender aesthetics.
I cannot put into words what Richard meant to me as a person and as a journalist. He was my mentor and my friend and my favorite person in all of cycling. I am beyond devastated. My love goes out to his family and anyone who had the supreme privilege to know him as I did.
roglič choosing to go to Bora when IPT offered him like 6 million euros a year is so funny. winning is still more important to him than being insanely rich. you've gotta hand it to him.
when i said after the tour that vinge suddenly deciding to do the vuelta didn't make sense and was only going to cause leadership problems twitter got mad at me and told me it would be fine bc everyone on jumbo visma wuvs each other vewwy much or something
Ok last thing I’ll say about this is I don’t get why it is imperative for everyone to be nice and boring all the time. Like it rules that Wout is kind of a baddie now and that Pogačar is in his troll era. It’s fun!
sorry for locking it's just that i can only take so many weird freaks telling me i'm secretly a man in a dress or "not a real journalist" because i refuse, on the grounds of basic ethics, to give airtime to monomaniacal bigots
He told me he was thinking of pursuing a life outside of cycling and now that opportunity is foreclosed to him. He loved his girlfriend and his dog. He cared about Switzerland and about climate change and about making right the ills of the world. A bright light gone.
Anyway, consider this my firm statement on the issue which frankly isn’t an issue because the athlete in question adhered to all rules and regulations and literally did not do anything wrong. Her result still stands because she won, period. Die mad about it.
Hello cycling twitter! some very exciting news: derailleur is a) now an incorporated company, and b) is looking for freelancers! We're seeking the weird, the wacky, the wonderful, with competitive web-based publishing rates.
Hello world! As one our first acts, here's the trailer for the Netflix Tour de France series. We found it in a bin out back.
It's excellent!
Please sign up if you want to find out what else is in our bins.
Transgender athletes historically have followed all sporting guidelines including testing within normal hormonal ranges. After significant hormone replacement therapy the body literally changes so vastly to be within regulation. There is no “advantage.”
Transphobes don’t care about that though and they don’t care about sports or fair play or dignity for the athlete. They care about policing gender. They care about eradicating transness and running normal people — my friends, colleagues, loved ones — out of public life.
I have made many mistakes in life and as a journalist but never on the scale of that Outside article on Mo Wilson. Jesus Christ. In no way should that piece have been published.
ordered my coffee and breakfast at the cafe entirely in Slovene without panicking and switching back to English. huge milestone in the quest against perpetual embarrassment. please clap
I have been very publicly and widely critical of NEOM as an architecture critic and have given lectures and made appearances on the subject since its inception so idk it’s been fun y’all. I’m about to be the most blacklisted any journalist has ever been.
NEOM City in Saoedi Arabië is heel serieus aan het onderzoeken om hoofdsponsorschap Jumbo-Visma over te nemen

I think there’s gonna be (and I’m already seeing a bit of it) a lot of defensiveness and gatekeeping among old fans when the TDF Netflix series comes out and I just want to say gently that there is no right and wrong way or time to get into cycling
As journalists we have an ethical duty to report the news and do due diligence. But we are dealing with a population facing profound state-sponsored violence and we are ethically bound to humanely report on issues that can cause real harm for vulnerable people.
i have been nothing but honest about my journey as a journalist through several profiles and several different platforms. I do not like it when strangers make malicious stuff up about me bc I asked a routine question to a rider they like. grow up!
I muted those conversations bc some of them have turned truly vile. I don’t know what happens to people that makes their hearts so black with hate for those they don’t understand
a guy gets second in the tour and a warm up race to Lombardia and suddenly he’s washed? Are you serious? I feel bad for y’all’s partners bc these standards are insane
the most relatable thing about jonas is how he is always on his phone after he does well. that's me. hey babe i just slayed at the tour. did you see? did you see me on tv? did you?
we were about as close to being friends as riders and journalists get to be. Gino believed in things far bigger than cycling and he acted on that and was never afraid to say or do what was right which is a rare quality in sports. I admired him very much
