After a year of videos of anti-Asian hate crimes and countless GoFundMe fundraisers, the massacre in Atlanta almost broke me. I managed to channel my anger into something positive by writing a letter. That letter is a full-page ad in today's

Self-made American billionaires who didn’t have to get picked for the CEO job and built their own Fortune 500 companies:

Jensen Huang: 5’ 7”
Jeff Bezos: 5’ 7”
Michael Bloomberg: 5’ 7”
Eric Yuan: 5’ 7”
Tony Xu: 5’ 7”

Bill Gates: 5’ 10”
In the US, 14.5% of men are 6ft or taller.
Among CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, 58% are 6ft or taller (4x increase)
3.9% of men are 6’2’’ or taller, among F500 CEOs, 30% are 6’2’’ or taller (7.6x increase)
"Did you even read the article?" I don't care what the article says, it's behind a paywall, and most people don't read articles anymore, they just see headlines.
@WSJ
changed the triggering title online, but this went to PRINT, a day after MP shooting and the same day as HMB.
@QianJulieWang
That train is never late. Don’t let those who try to make themselves feel self-important by making others feel small or invisible bring you down. They’ve likely accomplished little in their lives beyond being born into privilege. I’m proud to own a copy of your book!
I’m an old head that admittedly had never heard of BLACKPINK when my young hip employees were streaming Coachella in 2019 and I saw their impressive performance. I never imagined any Asian artists headlining, much less ones singing in Korean. Incredible.
My post about Business Insider's exclusion of Asian faces went viral and got 1.5M views on LinkedIn. Asians are often fighting to be seen, but that's not enough. We want a seat at the table that we rightfully deserve. I wrote this letter to my community...
After living in San Francisco 15 years, my friends moved back east last year. They came to visit this weekend and celebrated their son’s 8th birthday, only to come back to their car like this. The dirtbags stole his backpack and his beloved blanket from the trunk. This city man.
3 out of 7 of them are Asian and yet
@BusinessInsider
chose none of them to be in the cover photos. Gary Wang is worth 5x the others. This is how you make Asians feel invisible. Do better.
Media is powerful. Chinese Americans are sharing this opening scene from 3 Body Problem on
@netflix
because it’s the first accurate depiction of the violence and horrors of the rise of communism that many have seen. It was even worse than this. It’s sparking a lot of dialogue.
“I am giving you one last chance to stay out of state prison,” Judge Tsenin said to a man who stabbed a 94 year old Asian woman. In what civil society would this be allowed to happen? Probation for a man who tried to kill an elderly woman. This is sick.
Don’t get it twisted: DeSantis is okay with teaching AAPI history because he wants to perpetuate the model minority myth that Asians have done just fine in this country. Meanwhile he refuses to teach the rancid history of America towards Black people that have held them back.
23 yo Indian immigrant was killed by speeding cop car. A recording was released of police laughing, joking that her life had “limited value.” Where is the outrage from civil rights activists and national media coverage? Is she not the right brown to care?
This is why the model minority myth is harmful. Asians have the widest income gap. Refugees should not be held to the same bar as wealthy immigrants. Socioeconomic based admissions levels the playing field while indirectly addressing racial disparities.
This story needs attention. It took NYPD over a month to arrest a man who was clearly the main suspect in the murder of a Chinese delivery man. They claimed they needed time to gather evidence when they had video footage and a history. Infuriating.
The real winners of all the OpenAI drama? The three Indian American actors who get to play Satya Nadella in the multiple inevitable series already in the works on AppleTV, Hulu and HBO.
Don’t think we don’t notice that for a tragedy in any other community in America, our Twitter feeds would be filled with condolences, but when a mass shooting of Asians occurs, I barely see any mention of it. You would think it was just any other day on here.
In Taiwan, I paid $350 for a full body checkup that would have cost me tens of thousands of dollars in the US. They ran a battery of tests: blood, EKG, CT, sonogram, etc. For a nominal fee: endoscopy and colonoscopy. Then they went over the full report with me. It blew my mind.
@WSJ
The level of failure and callous disregard on multiple levels to edit or stop this from publishing with this title is astounding. Would they have the nerve to publish the title Are There 'Too Many Blacks' or Are There 'Too Many Jews' much less after mass shootings? ffs
Peak gaslighting with “we are seeing similar crimes across the country” when we don’t see any other cities with daily videos of violent and property crimes like we do in San Francisco. FBI data property crime index is over 3x higher in SF than NYC.
I'm outraged by the looting in Union Square last night. We are seeing similar crimes across the country. I have a simple message: don't bring that noise to our City.
Great work by SFPD.
Standby for felony charges.
A racist threw bricks and a metal grate at a Korean family with a 73-year old in Dolores Park while yelling “Go back to China.” So no, anti-Asian hate crimes are not down in SF. I worry about my mom walking around the city because of these hateful bigots.
@Erika_D_Smith
@SimuLiu
@latimes
Why does your headline make no mention of the Lunar New Year celebrations or that Monterey Park is heavily Asian? Seems relevant don’t you think? It just has a generic mass shooting at a dance studio?
It was a matter of time before these armed robberies of camera equipment led to murder. Japanese American security guard was shot and killed while protecting a news crew. The whole “it’s only stuff” excuse isn’t going to cut it anymore. This is way beyond out of control.
UPDATE: The victim is Kevin Nishita. He leaves behind a wife, two children and three grandchildren. He worked as an armed guard for Star Protection Agency and is a former Police officer.
Imagine walking away from a loan after paying more than half of a $1.56 billion. One thing after another compounding the demise of downtown San Francisco. Not sure how this gets turned around.
Over the last ten years I've been curating a community of Asian-American creators and builders that I felt was missing. Today, I'm excited to announce that I'm launching a syndicate to help invest in the next generation through this community.
A small group of criminals has targeted approximately 50 homes in the Oakland Hills where Asian families live, mostly elderly couples, according to OPD internal advisory I've seen. I have met some of the victims and will have surveillance video at 6.
Frank Somerville was only speaking truth and
@KTVU
suspended him for it. Women of color go missing all the time and they barely get any coverage or airtime. Much respect to him for calling it out.
Bay Area anchor Frank Somerville reportedly 'suspended indefinitely' by KTVU after objecting to oversaturation from media of Gabby Petito. Compelling stuff here:
We've been enduring subtle racism and microaggressions our entire lives, but we stayed quiet. FYI asking someone "Where are you from? No, where are you really from?" is racist.
“I'm tired of seeing Asian people being victimized. I saw elderly Asian people knocked off their feet by idiots...They don't know how to make friends with people who don't look like them. That's what Bruce and I did and I think more Americans need to learn from us.
@kaj33
“I’m beginning to think it hurts to be Asian American,” said one physician who requested anonymity. “I’ve been told many times I have all the talent and the whole package, but I’m just ‘not the right person.’”
Once again, an innocent Asian elder was pushed to the ground and murdered in San Francisco. No arrests have been made. It’s been nearly 900 days since grandpa Vicha Ratanapakdee was murdered and still no trial date has been set for his killer. These families deserve justice.
A 63-y/o woman was pushed to the ground in the Bayview @ abt 6:40 on 7/3.
Mr. Reyes saw her on the ground, bleeding f/her head & sprang into action to help.
Her husband speaks Cantonese so Reyes called 9-1-1 & rendered aid to save her life.
The woman passed away today 🧵⬇️
Just witnessed three people run into a Sunglass Hut at Stonestown Mall and grab a bunch of sunglasses into LV purses and run off. Couldn’t take a video or photo because I was holding the hands of my little kids. Breaks my heart to see my city like this.
I'm almost 50 and I only recently learned that there were Chinese Americans that fought in the Civil War. Because the only census categories then were white, black and mulatto, they didn't fit anywhere. We need to teach this history to our kids.
$20K garbage cans
$1.7M public toilet
$32M for a custom payroll system for teachers that didn't work
San Francisco burns money and give it away to contractors who are incompetent and never deliver on time. Any private company would be shut down for this derelict behavior.
Let’s be clear, this psychopath stabbed this innocent girl because she thought she was Chinese and would be “one less person to blow up our country.” The media and Washington is responsible for all of the anti-China rhetoric and stoking fear and hatred.
People who insinuate that he was just another Asian kid with good test scores and GPA perpetuate the stereotype that Harvard got in trouble for. That Asians can’t possibly have any other redeeming qualities or talents. This narrative has screwed over many deserving kids.
Despite earning 3.97 unweighted and 4.42 weighted GPA, scoring 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT's and founding his own e-signing startup RabbitSign in sophomore year, Zhong was rejected by 16 colleges he applied to.
This is disgusting. These two administrators at the top high school in America, withheld notifying students of being National Merit Scholars for five years, hurting 1200 students, in the name of “equity.”
@cathyparkhong
Both so tragic, and yet most of America doesn’t even know or care about the Dallas shootings. Or that the perp has targeted Asian businesses three times in the past month and is still on the loose.
Sarah Rich is a hard-working chef and mom who runs small businesses in SF. Her restaurants

This is a post from Sarah Rich, co-owner and chef at

in SF. It breaks my heart that small business owners like her, who are a treasure, are constantly dealing with break-ins and feces. Why does this city prioritize criminals and drug addicts over taxpaying citizens?
Asians are the modern day railroad worker for tech companies who historically had no voice.
“The generations of men and women before us had to suffer in silence. I don't think any one of us wants this to continue for a minute longer than it already has.”
This right here. All of these compassionate progressives in San Francisco are up in arms over a homeless woman who was hosed down (which was wrong), but none of them say a damn thing when multiple senior citizens are viciously attacked and murdered. Your silence speaks volumes.
One-tenth of the San Francisco population speaks Cantonese and this program was approved by the board of Trustees already, but the committee chooses to cut it for budget reasons. Yet Russian, German and French all still have certificate programs. Can’t hide their bias can they?
City College of San Francisco is pulling a Cantonese certificate program after the school’s Board of Trustees approved the 16-unit course sequence last November.
Yesterday, May 19, was the birthday of Malcolm X and Yuri Kochiyama, two great American activists who fought together for equal rights in solidarity and were good friends. She was by his side when he was assassinated in 1965. This is a piece called American Gothic X.
Friend came up from Palo Alto and parked at the Yerba Buena Parking Garage to see Oppenheimer with his son who is in high school. Came back to the car with the window smashed. He left nothing in the car, they just broke his window. Doubt he’ll be coming again any time soon.
So essentially they’ve been suppressing democracy the whole time because the system allowed a small number of people to kill bills allowing people to vote. Wonder how many other red states are trying to keep America “great”. What a disgrace.

A good friend who owns multiple small businesses in San Francisco, had two of them tagged over the weekend (Horsefeather’s new $50k parklet in Nopa) and one burglarized this morning (Lazy Susan in West Portal). Safe was stolen and alarm alerted police who came over an hour later.
$1.7M and 3 years to build a single public toilet. So many people grifting from government contracts. The dysfunction and bureaucracy is beyond ridiculous. Corrupt union contractors colluding to get absurd amounts of taxpayer dollars.
This segment last night from

I'm a liberal and I am disgusted by this dismissive tweet by

Only cowards and scumbags attack the elderly. Imagine your mother or grandmother getting groceries and having this piece of sh*t sucker punch her in the face. Pamela Price won’t hold him accountable and this menace will be on the street to attack someone again in a few days.

Call it out when you see it. For far too long, we let these microaggressions slide, so they continue to happen again and again. Be the squeaky wheel. Thank you
@BusinessInsider
for adding Andy’s photo and noting why. This is how things slowly change, when we use our voices.
Also, when I called out
@BusinessInsider
, they had the integrity to update the article and add an editor’s note. The
@WSJ
changed the title online surreptitiously without any acknowledgment or ownership of their wrongdoing. Shameful “journalism” at best.
I only learned last year that one of the cofounders of LinkedIn was Vietnamese American and one of the cofounders of Square was Chinese American. We continue to be written out of stories, stories that could inspire future generations.
Michelle Yeoh is 60. Angela Bassett is 64. They are proof that age ain’t nothing but a number. Loved seeing them together in Gunpowder Milkshake. Hollywood: give them all the roles.
People who try to gaslight us by saying anti-Asian hate isn’t real can stfu. This is terrifying. Our community is constantly living in fear because of racists and psychopaths like this woman.
A 56-year-old woman has been charged after an 18-year-old Indiana University student repeatedly was stabbed in the head on a public bus in an attack the school says was because the victim is Asian.
Don't turn away from this. They won't show these videos on the local news anymore, because it's too frequent and prevalent (which is sickening enough). This type of violence against Asian elders has become normalized and people are becoming apathetic, but we can't allow that.
The 67-year old owner of the popular Ruby King Bakery in Oakland’s Chinatown was pistol-whipped & robbed around E12th & 2nd late Tuesday AM.
His good friend told me he is traumatized but went back to work shortly after the incident despite injuries to his head. 🧵⬇️

He still managed to arrive at Harvard in 1972, already using drugs that would lead him into a 14-year battle with addiction. It culminated with a charge of possessing heroin while on the way to rehab in 1983.
Another innocent elderly Asian man in San Francisco minding his business and attacked for no reason. And yet mayor

Tell me again that they aren’t targeting Asians. Tell me again that crime is down. Tell me again that things aren’t that bad in San Francisco. Our city continues to fail us miserably and we aren’t safe anywhere, even in Laurel Village. Thank you

for covering this.
This is 84-year old Marc. He was at an ATM in Laurel Village yesterday when a man approached & said “give me your money, give me your money!”
As Marc reached for his bag to give him cash the man hit Marc 2x’s in the face w/a glass bottle.(1/3)

Asians would not even be allowed in this country if it weren’t for Black activists getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. That led directly to the Immigration Act of 1965.
I’ve now seen two videos of this little boy from China trying to practice English on Omegle and ending up on the receiving end of ignorant hate against Chinese people. He handles both situations well but imagine being a kid and listening to this. Disgusting.
watch this and tell me there is no sinophobia. The things she said to a little boy is beyond repulsive. Pls retweet to spread awareness, and we should actually find this woman! She’s dangerous! She literally was trying to get the boy to hurt himself.
Trash progressives putting their racist stickers on trash cans. They know full well this was racist imagery and doubled down on it with these stickers. At least they own their racism. Can’t wait til we run these failed ideologues out of the city.
This is what led to the model minority myth. When immigrants are coming to your country for graduate degrees, they are bound to earn higher incomes. However when they come as slaves or refugees, they don’t have a choice or the same means to succeed.
And so it begins. First they came after the Chinese professors from China that were innocent. Now they’re coming after Chinese-American executives by fabricating stories. CEO of a bank, board of Mattel and United Way of LA and the GOP wants to smear him. Shameful new McCarthyism.
Meet Dominic Ng:
- Member of a front group for Chinese intel
- Donated $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund
- Appointed by Biden to represent U.S. in Asia
Mr. Ng is compromised at best, a traitor at worst, and MUST be investigated by the FBI.
Jaahnavi Kandula was a graduate student from India whose single mother saved so she could study in America. The VP of the police union joked on the recording to “just write a check. $11,000.” Despicable. CNN would be all over this if it was someone else.
It’s honestly embarrassing having a board of supervisors this useless. Blaming the press for reporting the crime that he is responsible for doing something about. Unbelievable. Tourists aren’t coming because it’s not safe here Dean.
People who oppose DEI efforts believe that the best people should get the jobs and are led to believe that they earned their spots fair and square of their own merit. They refuse to acknowledge the benefits, privilege and systems that got them there. Self awareness is important.
@DionLimTV
Attacked and robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight in front of a restaurant. But surely this is just the hundredth “sensationalized” viral video of an Asian person being targeted and mugged by criminals that is overblowing things.
Math is hard, so let’s get rid of math. America cannot continue being this lazy and copping out. Fix inequality in our school systems by investing in them and paying teachers better so kids can all learn math, not by depriving kids of advanced math. This can’t be the way.
Cambridge Public Schools eliminated advanced math in middle school with the aim of reducing disparities between low-income children of color and their more affluent peers. But some families and educators argue the decision has had the opposite effect.
Every day I grow more afraid that we are going to elect Donald Trump again or someone of his ilk. The progressive left and their burn it all down mentality are going to scare away every rational person anywhere on the left of the political spectrum.
Most people don’t realize that after the racist Chinese Exclusion Act was finally lifted in 1943 (after 61 years), the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 only allowed the most highly educated and elite from Asia to enter the country. These were the cream of the crop.
Tin Vi Pham, 51, was stabbed 18 times on a light rail in Seattle. Perp was arrested at the scene and initially “declined” at jail and sent to hospital. Stabbed someone 18 times but no attempted murder charges. Just 1st and 2nd degree assault.
COVID-19 has devastated the restaurant industry. Most people do not realize how far reaching the damage is. Thanks to
@OpenTable
sharing their data on the evolving situation, I was able to visualize the impact. Patronage was down over 60% YoY in some cities as of March 14.
I understand compassion, but if Asian victims of hate crimes can’t even admit these are hate crimes, then there is no hope and this will only continue. We need to stand up for ourselves for things to get better. This is exactly why Asians are targeted.
We need systems and safety nets that care for all people, but we need to learn history and sociology to understand why things are so broken and imbalanced. People like DeSantis don’t want to teach that, because it exposes a system that has advantaged them for so long.
@borakwon
@WSJ
The saddest part is that they knew they would get away with it because apparently it’s okay to be racist to Asians in this country without any real recourse.
Enough has been enough for far too long. We are so sick and tired of all of this. Business owners being attacked and robbed. Elderly Asians being pushed and killed. Families and tourists getting their cars broken into. Every damn day, another video of mayhem and chaos.
Owner Peterson Harter opened his first sandwich shop Sandy’s in the Haight just 3 months ago. He said that he was punched in the face, and aired his frustrations on IG shortly after.

what’s the plan?”
Not all Asians are “doing just fine.” Here in San Francisco, families are living in SROs (Single Room Occupancies) with 6 people packed into 100 square-foot rooms. The narrative that all Asians can pull themselves up by their bootstraps is a lie.
