I was 16 when a boy who had been hurling homophobia all night kicked me down a flight of stairs, splitting my brow on a door handle about 3mm from my eyeball. He then tried to stab and rob me while dozens of friends *watched*. But fuck, a yellow card?! Oh my god, that's so scary!
Queer people the world over have to deal with this kind of shit (or worse) at any age, or at *least* live with the threat of it their whole lives. These wealthy boys — elevated idols of masculinity and cis straight male culture — fear being at a disadvantage during a GAME. Wimps.

I’m from a time when I got bullied daily for being gay. My school life was hell. At one point just wanted to die and not have to put up with it. The advice from adults? Ignore them and they’ll go away. Over 40 years later and they’re all still there -

I got angry on Facebook after that FIFA pratt’s press conference.
There are things I missed out because I still can’t bring myself to describe them.
But I’ve been lucky, I’ve never been left with bruising I couldn’t hide under clothing.
