9 yrs ago I started working on a role model intervention to attract women into economics. The intervention worked.

Cant wait for replications!
I strongly believe that tenure track faculty with small kids, whose schools will be closed for a long time, and with working spouses, need to have their tenure clock extended.
Especially women.

Ever experienced this?
- Lead author of a paper - a woman - submits to conference;
- Conference organizers accept the paper but invite the last author - a senior man - to present;
- Lead author gets no communication about the conference.
I’m on the verge of naming names…
Do workers get angrier at female managers? YES
Are women less likely to want to be managers when worker backlash is possible? YES
Gender differences in managers’ decisions? SOME, but no diff. in profits
Do men & women motivate employees differently?YES
I have a 3 m.old baby and I am on maternity leave. I try to do some work every day and I often fail. Baby wakes up at least twice at night. Im tired and confused in the am. Unbelievably, most working moms in America at this stage are back at work full time. Let's reflect on that.
My 7 yr old son was excited about nail polish this weekend.
Last night we talked about how kids at school may say things. So he decided to only keep the thumb painted. Still got teased. He cried & took it off. Breaks my ❤️.
Any cool guys wearing nail polish, so I can show him?

Today I submitted a paper despite having slept 5 hrs (2+1+1+1, where the + indicates an interruption due to baby or toddler).
Even though the paper will probably get back to me within 48 hrs, I’m feeling accomplished and I think I should celebrate.

Am I the only one often wondering if it is 2020 or 2021? And even wondering how old I am (and having to compute my age from birth year)?
Is this due to covid? Or just part of the aging process? I’m so confused.
More likely to be questioned
More likely to be patronized
More likely to receive backlash
More severely punished if making a mistake
More likely to NOT get credit for team work

“Role Modes in Developing Countries”
I wrote a chapter for the Handbook of Experimental Development Economics, out in 2023.
I review the literature on role model interventions (via videos or in-person events) in developing countries.
Comments welcome!
When your work spans over multiple sub-field of economics (behavioral, development, crime, law&econ, personnel econ, gender, education) sometimes it’s hard to define yourself as an “X economist.”
I just had an identity crisis submitting a paper to the NBER SI.

If somebody is a great advisor or colleague, never acted badly to you or in your presence, don’t think “this is impossible”. It doesn’t have to happen to you for you to care.
Victims -phd students or junior scholars -have nothing to gain & everything to lose from coming forward
I’m refereeing a paper that doesn’t have the authors’ names on the front page. I’m forcing myself not to look up who they are.
In 2020 I aim to be as objective as I can when commenting on papers. Let’s do our best to reduce the role that status plays in the publication process.
I have good reasons to skip the AEA meetings this year.

Today, I honor the strongest woman I know: my mom, who dropped out of school to have my brother at 17 (me at 19). Worked all life in factories/cafeterias/rich people homes.
She didn’t pursue her dreams, but always looked at life with excitement (still does). My inner strength 💪
I woke up with messages from both of my parents congratulating me for my 20 years from my college (undergrad) graduation.
It looks like it happened on October 20th, 2001. I would have never remembered, but it was a day they’ll never forget….

One more thing.
Departments with no or few women:
When asked why that is, and when replying “we used to, but they had to leave due to location preferences or spousal constraints”
Shouldn’t you take responsibility & say that you weren’t interested in lifting those constraints?
Unfortunately a new possibly hate- motivated mass shooting happened in the US & I see in the news lots of details about shooter’s background, history of bullying etc.

Make & female college students visited primary schools in Somalia. Female RMs impacted students’ attitudes toward gender equality. No impact on education aspirations.
More thoughts on “academic” mothers:
- Most PhD students don’t want kids in their 20s. In my 20s and early 30s I wanted to be as care-free as male colleagues
- Outsourcing? Many of us want to enjoy our kids
- Travel & weekend work is v. hard for women with kids under 2 (1/2)

So here is the situation.
My son is in 1st grade. No mask mandate. No social distancing. Say a kid tests positive (happened already). Kids in close contact don’t need to quarantine or test. It’s up to their parents to decide. Recall: I’m in small town Texas. No remote option.
This morning we are finally out of the Airbnb and back in our house after 3 months and 8 days.
This morning I also woke up to an R&R.
Is my bad luck finally over? Or is this an April’s fools joke?
Guess where we are finally going?
(Pending: surviving solo traveling with 2 boys, multiple meltdowns on the 2 planes we are taking, infinite mask-related fights, multiple covid tests at airports….)

During my 1st year of PhD I fell madly in love with a non-economist (my husband). The PhD was important and the coursework was hard but other important things were happening in my life.
That kept me sane and left me with wonderful memories of that year.
My advice: 1/n
CW: Suicidal ideation
Awful.
One in nine economics PhD students reported contemplating suicide or self-harm on at least several days in the last two weeks (2017/18 survey)
This is 1.5x more prevalent than among average 18-25 y/os (the highest risk group in general population)
Academic productivity peaks at year four after starting as AP, and can be modeled as a random walk with high variance early in career, and decreased variance later in career.

Please read this.
It applies to any work environment where women are hired and supported when they are junior and “non-threatening”. Yet, when they become equals to the men in power, they get isolated, disrespected and ultimately pushed away.
Also: lead author and women coauthors ask senior man to rectify and ask organizers to - at a minimum - invite lead author.
Senior man author says he did.
Weeks later: lead woman author still has not heard from conference organizers, and has no information about the conference
Partly thanks to Twitter I’m realizing that that there are SO MANY Italian economists (men and women) in the US that I’d like to meet! We should create a “Society of Italian Economists in the US”, organize a yearly conference and have the best time!
As I finalize a new working paper (which I’m really excited about), the usual question arises: should I just delete the last paragraph of the intro? “In section 2, we….”?

I just got one for the first time and I don’t really know how to feel about it. Angry? Frustrated? Happy? Hopeful? Too many emotions together?
Any experiences of successful resubmissions out there?
The fact that male academics are making my tweets about mothers in academia all about themselves tells you all you need to know about the profession.
That’s all for me. Logging off.
