A simple contour map of the number of years since each observation station last recorded wind gusts of equal strength or stronger than Sunday's. In general, areas with the most significant values were East Midlands into East Anglia, where the squall line gusts were most intense🌬️

EAST: Experimental cross section for "most likely" max gust during #StormCiar án. Similar to previous thoughts, 40-55mph inland & 60+mph along E coast. However, any slight change in shape/track of low could give stronger winds (indicated by pale shading)

EAST: Understandably a lot of interest in #StormCiar án on Thursday. Naturally, uncertainty about exact track, depth and shape of the low — "most likely" scenario gusts 40-55mph inland, perhaps >60mph along E coast. Rain accums broadly 15-25mm. Refinements likely closer to event.

Have you noticed an increase in getting static shocks when you touch something metal? It's quite likely the weather is at least partly to blame, since static charge build-up is enhanced when the air is very dry. This is likely to be an ongoing theme through much of this week...

EAST: Coldest December night in the region since 2012, with several sites down to -7°C — Marham was the coldest at -7.4°C 🥶 Fairly extensive low cloud and freezing fog in many areas this morning, and it could linger all day in some places 🌫️☁️

The weather station at The Needles on the Isle of Wight is at a very exposed location, and opened in 1996. So far today it has recorded a gust of 109mph, which is the joint 4th strongest gust in the station's history, and also the station's strongest November gust on record. 🍃

From very dry to very wet - back in September, many areas in southern Britain remained completely dry for up to three weeks. Since then, parts of East Anglia in particular haven't had a single completely dry day for over three weeks... ☔️

Temperatures in the UK exceeded 35°C today for the 5th time this year (31st Jul, 7th Aug, 10th Aug, 11th Aug, 12th Aug). This ties with 1976, which is the only other year on record with this many ≥35°C days 🥵

Convection firing nicely west of Norwich, with tilted updrafts. Good clear air around them - it feels and looks like the U.S. Plains! Not long now until it goes bang - severe thunderstorms likely later this afternoon ⚡️⚡️

This has to be one of the best storms I've ever seen in the UK - more akin to the type we chase in the U.S. Plains ⚡️⚡️

Quite a cool feature this morning, with last night's elevated convection (showers/thunderstorms) now wrapped around a mid-level circulation. Notice the small low at 700mb (approx 2.3km above ground), vs little evidence of any circulation at the surface (widespread NE'ly winds)
