I’ll never forget doing compressions in a young child who was slowly dying from Influenza B, his heart being the last organ to fail. He made it (🤲🏽❤️), which speaks to his absolute tenacity. Look at flu deaths in kids this yr. It’s remarkable. 👀 I hope we can learn from this.

As a pediatric ER doc, I give nitrous to remove stitches, intranasal versed to wash a blister, IV ketamine to remove a bead from an ear canal. Then, I read a story about a 4 y/o in #Gaza not receiving anesthesia for an amputation. A 4 y/o. What an inconceivable world we live in.

My colleague just saw a newborn in the ED with Covid. Parents were unvaccinated. Please remember that maternal immunity confers some protection to the baby, both through placental and breast milk transfer. Parents, birthing people, pls get vaccinated.

@rbrt__o It’s a good question. I haven’t seen any flu immunization rates released for this season yet, tho they had been climbing in recent yrs. But I’d also be in favor of masking when community prevalence rises, smaller cohort classes for kids, and normalizing frequent hand washing.

The only thing, the ONLY thing that will prevent further childhood morbidity and mortality is a permanent ceasefire & immediate rebuilding of the healthcare infrastructure. Even then, it will take many years. The HCWs who have been lost (>250) cannot just be replaced.

Yesterday I was on an ED shift meant to only teach new med students abt patient care. Instead I took them to the waiting room & we started treatments for as many of the 20+ out there as we could. Bc EDs are surging & part of being a Dr. means understanding the stress of waiting.

Something that I love abt the #GenZ med students that I work with is the consistency w/ which they ask permission to touch each child when doing even the simplest parts of the medical exam. Bc it’s possible & necessary to teach preference & consent, even w our youngest patients.

ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) & subsequent cerebral palsy- they have many care needs for which there are no resources - with a blockade on supplies, no capacity for milk storage, & less HCWs bc so many have been killed, the situation is dire
