My book, "The Crooked Timber of Democracy in
#Israel
: Promise Unfulfilled" is out in paperback, available & affordable on Amazon &
@degruyter_pub
. It was first published 3 weeks before the war; I still can't tell if everything's changed, or nothing.
With stunning silence, via incomprehensible bureaucracy,
#Israel
is doing what it claims for decades it is not: open annexation. But look closely, it was there all along. Honored to co-author this w/ incomparably knowledgable

survey of
#Palestinian
-Arab citizens of
#Israel
- these are seriously alarming numbers. No democratic society shd see numbers like these.
Never thought i would read this from Benjamin Pogrund. It's the most detailed, factual comparison of S. African apartheid & Israel-Palestine so far, by someone who always denied it.
I have to say I'm struck that
#BenGvir
's statements hit such a nerve in
#Israeli
liberal circles this week. People, it wasn't a statement of intent - it was a description of the past: every single day of Israeli history up to this moment. 1/5
Striking: A plurality of
#Israelis
, almost half, support release of all hostages in return for *complete end of the war* & "release of thousands of terrorists" - poll commmissioned by
@KANNews_rblx
, Isrl's public broadcaster. Nearly 1/3 oppose & 1/5 don't know.
"just like every previous Israeli leader, [Bennett] has proven that when we say "never again," we actually mean "never again to us." Nothing excuses Israel's moral failure on Putin and his war on Ukraine, by

Every f-king word.
If you want to know why

FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA: The same slogan, translated into

#Israelis
are increasingly skeptical that "total victory" is worth it, or whether it's even actually a victory. I argue here that there's a long list of gains to be made by ending this war. Maybe that shd be considered victory instead.
They clearly went for the water and olive trees just to make absolutely sure everyone knows it's not about security, in case you...er... believed that.
BREAKING: Just now in Shi'b al Butum, South Hebron Hills, the IDF destroyed 3 homes and 3 water tanks. More demolitions continue. Making life for Palestinians more impossible than it already is.

THREAD
To avoid tribal thinking, I recommend asking yourself: Have I acknowledged that the fate of all
#Israelis
&
#Palestinians
is intertwined, and zero-sum thinking will perpetuate horrors upon them that reverberate onto us?
& I detected *only* one lie in BG's words: The hogwash that it's all about security, when everyone, right & left, knows it's about land & property expropriation, destruction of livelihood, control, disenfranchisement, crushing Palestinians as individuals & collective 4/5
The Crooked Timber of Democracy in
#Israel
: Promise Unfulfilled is out today. This (my) book tells the tale of democracy from the start, a biography (not obituary), & hopefully a guide to the perplexed (or terrified) re: how Israel reached this crisis.1/4
Who was implementing these policies all these years, aliens? you really didn't know? Was it all OK as long as no one said openly what was happening? 3/5
All he did was name policies that have been in place, open for all to see, for 56 years in occupied territories & two decades of military rule in sov. Israel, including an excruciating pass system for Palestinian citizens before that. 2/5
Fighting between
#Palestinian
&
#Jewish
citizens of
#Israel
this week may be mutual but it is not symmetrical. The causes are different: There is violence of despair, and violence born of power craving more. My thoughts
That thing when Israeli military analysts say "neither side has an interest in escalation right now," which precedes pretty much every war between Israel & Hamas
@NaomiPaiss
@Ibishblog
I've been watching her too & also impressed. I recall her as good in the past but I think she's been very tactful at conveying policy, being clear about what isn't yet or can't be known & emphasizing extremely pragmatic decisionmaking. Practically a balm.
This country is literally, physically, socially, politically, falling apart. The symbolism of synagogue bleechers collapsing afyer everything just couldn't be more symbolic. 10 people in critical condition, just what tf.
Oh hi: "Recognition of Palestine is hardly unilateral. Over 100 countries have already recognized Palestine...the current effort wd be unusually multilateral; it's more accurate to speak of Israel's unilateral *rejection* of Palestinian statehood." (21/2)
I spoke today with Canadian Prime Minister
@JustinTrudeau
.
I conveyed my appreciation to The Prime Minister for his personal commitment to Israelโs security.
In light of the upcoming vote in Canadaโs parliament calling for the unilateral recognision of a Palestinian State, I
Important to read this, since political drama threatens to eclipse the main issue. For 55 years, sometimes w zero opposition, Isrl gov *votes* for segregated laws to maintain superior status of Jews/Isrls over Palestinian subjects in same territory. All govs, every time.
Whatโs happening in Israel today: a set of regulations formalizing apartheid are up for a renewed vote. These rules offer Jews in the West Bank a superior position over Palestinians, allowing settlers Israeli social security, access to civilian rather than military courts etc.
Also, I can explain this to our conservative, confused, Israel-sycophant friends on Twitter very simply: you don't cancel the reasonability standard for judging gov't action unless u feel the need to govern extremely unreasonably. What's not clear? I'm losing patience.
Some think surging protests cd bring down the Netanyahu gov, but Bible-infused nationalists in power are consolidating plans to resettle

I spoke to Ahed Tamimi in her first sit-down interview out of Israeli prison. She talked about why she slapped the soldier, the night of her arrest and interrogation, life behind bars, and her dreams for the future. My most memorable interview to date
I was able to view photos of his wounds but actually unable to watch this vid: terror attack & attempted lynch of 17-year old Palestinian Israeli from Jaffa, this after roadside execution of 19-year old by a drunk Jewish driver on Sat. Who is guiding this country? oh right.
Since this piece was published ~14 hours ago, Trinity College in Ireland agreed to divest from companies involved in WB occupation & Biden announced he'll stop weapons if
#Israel
expands Rafah op. Expect more.
My analysis of
#Israel
's policy re: Gaza: Boosting Hamas w/ funds &political power, while maintaining closure that squeezed population to subsistence levels, generated a dangerous paradox: fury against Israel, channeled through ever-more empowered Hamas.
Read
@OriNir_APN
's very important piece in
@nytimes
today. Connect the dots & it's no longer *just* about annexation, but Nakba. Simply shocking that a decade ago, Isrl's rightwing was busy denying the first one.
Israel's Finance Min (&Min of Annexation), blocks major funds for advancement of Palestinian neighborhoods of E. Jm, in order to destroy prep program to integrate them into university. You have to be a real Jim Crow style supremacist & a fanatic Arab-hater to do that. Check.
Is it all over for the left-wing, pro peace camp in
#Israel
? Or, *davka* a time when its ideas are needed more than ever? My (long read) analysis, at
@nybooks
First day-after plan from a war cabinet member this whole time: Benny Gantz calls for an American, European, Palestinian & Arab administration for Gaza. He said it extremely fast, like he was hoping people wouldn't really hear it.
The permit regime is Osloโs enduring legacy. It must be abolished. I'll add: If you don't understand the bureaucratic chokehold, you don't understand occupation. It's a war of bureaucratic attrition &

Fascinating symbolic debate but remember, every single day Israel accuses Palestinians of showing maps of historic Palestine w no GL as proof of their enduring evil. We can deny Green Line all we want but can't deny the hypocrisy anymore - it's not even hiding. Almost a relief.

Random fascinating higher ed stats from

Jews to flood right & never stop until they reached Genghis Khan. Yet survey after survey shows

@haaretzcom
Among the shocking things is that
@yairlapid
is saying some of the most sensible words I've heard in the last 3 days. Paraphrase: those who undermine police and the courts, who incite to terror, can't pretend now that they are shocked when people ignore rule of law. Well, yes.
At least as important, he quoted an Arabic proverb in Hebrew - & then in Arabic. The effort in his speech was visible & the symbolism cannot be overstated. Rivlin thereby spoke to all citizens, a radical concept in dark days, and he spoke loudly & clearly to

Green line never appears in any Israeli iconography, not textbooks, not public art, not weather maps. First /only time i've seen it was the corona epidemiology maps in 2020, then it vanished again
I hate the occupation, I will always find The Wall heart-stopping, formative even, & I believe in free speech. And I'm done with Roger Waters. (Context matters.)
My take in
@guardian
, eviscerating the judiciary is just 1 part of an all-out assault: on media, culture, NGOs, independent public agencies, bills for death penalty, deportation. Full picture in

It's not for me to say how Palestinians shd conduct political activism (nonviolent, ofc). But if it was, well, every word here. It is certainly my place to support
@omdimbeyachad
loud & clear, as any decent person should.
Just boycott them all? The decision by a large element of the pro-Palestine BDS movement (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) to shun & denounce Standing Together (Odim Beyachad/ืขืืืืื ืืืื) is puzzling & truly short-sighted. It is also symptomatic of how far-left radical
In Tel Aviv, mass and I mean *mass* demo bc no one trusts govt intentions. Intense, almost frenzied energy. But this was the best "No to chauvinist gvt! No to homophobic govt! No to transphobic govt!" Just look at them.
People get so touchy when u use the term

#Israel
conquered territories in war & occupied them & is now planning to own them permanently. Call it whatever u fancy! It violates international law & undermines the post-war order.
2 questions: should a man be shot in the neck in order to steal his generator? Does confiscating a generator from one of the most abysmal, impoverished areas btwn river & sea, in dead of winter, keep Israel, or anyone, safe? There is no answer but no.
The most extensive policy-oriented analysis & prescription for "what do we do tomorrow" for Palestinians, by Palestinians, is here, by the meticuous & pragmatic

Israeli insidery thing: had to do some basic research on Kohelet Forum, history, founding, founder, funding. 1 hour down the rabbit hole, I am feeling vaguely nauseous & exceedingly depressed. Just sharing.
Know what else is shockingly dishonest? To accuse Hamas of trafficking in images when Israeli state pours tens of millions (of my tax$$) into hasbara instead of solving problems, poisoning people's minds w cherry tomatoes instead of letting Gaza farmers export their own 1/2
Speaking of apartheid, we set out to find what the people who actually live under
#Israel
's control -
#Israelis
&
#Palestinians
- think. Our poll showed some surprising agreement on reality; they disagree more on what to call it. My analysis.
@btselem
Instead of worrying about unilateral recognition of a
#Palestinian
state, we need to talk about about unilateral
#Israeli
rejection of that state. This & other arguments re: Pal state here.
Why? b/c the worse realities of

become, the more frenzied u have to be to defend them. Muriel Asseburg is an analyst of great intellect &integrity, her work meticulous & factual; that's it. Why Israel is attacking Germany's top Middle East expert
The gaysploitation by Isrli right (&by right-wingers on Isrl), of Ahmad Abu Murkhiyeh's horrific death is a disgrace.People, you have lost your shame & apparently your senses. Honor the man, stop cherry-picking Palestinian problems to suit yr politics. Talk about moral turpitude
My analysis of the changing trajectory of the US-Israel relationship: diverging paths before the war, the crisis today, & social, political & demographic trends that seem set to deepen the divide.

Surprised by yr position. I do comparative conflict work, no 2 cases are identical. But comparisons still help & legal terms exist regardless. Ofc words matter, they chose this one+ demonstrated their case w ample examples. Legit argument, unrelated to SA.This sounds defensive
100% true. I just returned from book/war lecture tour including 7 US campuses at center of storm. Not a single disturbance, only earnest, thoughtful, probing questions.

Not sure what to make of the journalism diplomacy & interesting to hear POTUS vision& insider policy details, but some of Friedman's analysis/assumptions are stunningly off. longish thread.
Thing is, it's not that shocking for an
#Israeli
PM to fire a minister. But there is a sense that literally no one is driving the train here. BB has lost it & a gang of nonsensical thugs is in charge
What I find worrying is that Bennett promises
#Israel
the govt will be more right wing than the present gov, citing Saar as Justice Minister. We don't exactly know what Saar will do but it's worrying.
I went to the joint

memorial ceremony last night, just as I did last year. I dare anyone to find a defense for the Prime Minister personally banning bereaved people from mourning together & expressing their shared yearning for peace. You can't &there isn't.
Firing at civilians is indefensible no matter who or where & no matter the casus belli. If you can't defend civilians of all nationalities, stay out of it. Drop your accusations of bothsider-ism or who started it b/c I'm not interested & you're wrong.
Remember how the JCPOA=existential threat to

@issacharoff
writes: "The word 'shame' has lost meaning in light of atrocities on the ground. West Bank pogroms continue, this time in Um Tzafa, north of Ramallah, where Jewish terrorists burned homes property, while Isrl. sec. forces displayed impressive laxity." 1/2
