I was re-reading Thomas Nagel's wonderful essay 'Death' and looked to see where it first appeared. I expected it to be NYRB or some such, but it was Nous. I can't imagine it being published there or indeed in any other top journal today, and our journals are all the worse for it.

@csandis Funny, just yesterday I read his "The Absurd" and had the same reaction (though it was Journal Of Philosophy not Nous)

@csandis I like it and use it to teach the harm of death issue sometimes. Some critical points are less than clear tho imo.

@csandis @LauraLuzSilva This is a wonderful thread. So true. Most of the texts I love by psychoanalysts and philosophers would never get published in journals now
