Rafa to Spanish media: "I don’t think my future happiness depends on whether I win one Grand Slam title more than Novak or Roger. So I will keep doing what I do, pushing myself to the maximum to keep enjoying my career. And from there, what will be will be, and I’ll welcome it."
What a day for
@NickKyrgios
, not only did he win the singles in Washington DC but he's teamed with Jack Sock to win the doubles. He is the first man in the tournament's history to win singles and doubles in the same year. They beat Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 75 64
What is this country coming to when a person like Ash Barty is reported to the alcohol marketing authority because she drank some beer on winning the Australian Open? I'm shaking my head in amazement. Just pathetic.
It baffles me that people question
@andy_murray
being awarded wild cards. For what he's achieved & what he's been through, there should be NO questioning. Add his passion & there should be no limit to wild cards 4 him. Usually someone wanting 15secs of attention who questions it.
It needs to be stressed, this was not a decision by the Australian Open or Tennis Australia. It was made by an independent panel of medical experts appointed by the Victorian health department & followed ATAGI guidelines. The panel have no idea whose application they are seeing.
Novak Djokovic wanted to achieve three things this year, the Grand Slam, Olympic gold medal and the Davis Cup. He had an amazing year, but missed all three targets.
OFFICIAL:
@ashbarty
is done for the rest of 2021. It's been a huge year topped off with Wimbledon. It was also tough being away from home for 8 months. She won't defend her
@WTAFinals
nor play the
@BJKCup
She said the stress of Queensland's quarantine added to her decision.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has created a bit of tennis history. He has become the first Greek player to reach the final of a major. He has weathered the turbulence and defeated Alexander Zverev 63 63 46 46 63. Tsitsi is the youngest major finalist since Andy Murray at 2010 Aussie Open.
Well done Ash Barty. Can proudly boast I am the only Australian media person to have been at all three of her major titles in person 2019 French Open, 2021 Wimbledon and 2022 Australian Open.
How good & how much fun was the match between
@NickKyrgios
&
@DjokerNole
. How many new eyeballs were directed at tennis.This was pure entertainment & a great curtain raiser to the Australian Open. Sold out RLA showed that. The 10 yr olds & Wheelies were great. NK won 4-3 2-4 10-9
@Lateralsimon
@NickKyrgios
My reminder note is probably the most famous underarm serve was the one Michael Chang did to Ivan lendl at the French and beat Ivan and went on to win the title. Its a smart tactical move if it works.
No decision on the Djokovic saga with the Federal Court. The Chief Justice even suggested it could go into tomorrow. The order of play has been held back with the hope of a decision but they can't wait much longer and it will be released at 4pm Melbourne time.
Super function
@SH_RolexMasters
Meet the Masters. Roger Federer went head to head with Chef Simon cooking sausages. Chief judge was Li Na. Watch her reaction at the end
So-called celebs weighing in on the controversy of the women's final. Reading some of the comments online shows they know diddly squat about the situation and/or rules. The coach admitting to coaching, seems to be ignored. Calling official "liar", "thief" is abuse.
Listening to and seeing comments about
@NickKyrgios
and his approach to things in Washington eg fun with crowd, playing ping pong with kids etc etc etc. Where have people been? He's had that sort of engagement for long time.
@JimmyConnors
@AustralianOpen
Jimmy he had it 18mtghs ago. You need to understand what this country has been through & what Melbourne has been through. Rules are rules & there can't be 1 for some & another for all else. Public are already fuming with the situation. To quote Aussies "doesn't pass the pub test"
@andy_murray
@Wimbledon
Andy is totally right. She did nothing to warrant any criticism.
@piersmorgan
said she couldn't stand the pressure and quit. As a reminder he walked of a TV set because he couldn't stand the pressure and he then quit. Discuss!
For the first time since 1999, 4 Australians are in the last 16 of Wimbledon. In 1999 it was 3 men & 1 woman like now. In 1999 it was Wayne Arthurs, Mark Philippoussis, Pat Rafter & Jelena Dokic. This time its Alex De Minaur, Jason Kubler, Nick Kyrgios & Ajla Tomljanovic
Who said
@NickKyrgios
didn't like clay? 😆😆In the Washington doubles, he and Jack Sock beat the French Open champions Arevalo and Rojer in the first round anad beat the French Open finalists Dodig and Krajicek in the final.
It's baffling the attention Novak Djokovic's trainer mixing an "energy" drink in the stands 4 Djokovic has attracted. It's a non story. There's almost an implication from some that something is up while others can't even get well publicised facts right. He's won 21 majors, not 22
Singer
@adamlambert
was sitting immediately in front of me on flight from London. Believe he's going to perform on
@TheVoiceAU
. He was very accommodating with people asking for pics etc. No, I was not one 🙂
@pmouratoglou
It's a trial with the ATP. 🤞it won't go ahead. Tennis is an individual sport. The WTA made a bad move years ago. Can a player not think for themself? This is like exam cheating. It is a negative for the sport. The Tours should have done more to stop the illegal aspect.
He promised he would do it on his own steam after the disappointment of not getting a wild card and .
@TKokkinakis
has kept that promise. He has qualified for the Australian Open main draw beating Peter Polansky 64 64 in the last round of qualies. Well done Thanners.
Not surprising.. Ivan lendl ends coaching Zverev "I have a lot of belief in Sascha who is still very young. I think that one day he may become a great player but currently he has some off court issues that make it difficult to workin a way that is consistent with my philosophy."
Please... people get tennis terminology correct. Anything before 1969 is NOT the Australian Open, it was Australian Championships. Big difference. And it is NOT a grand slam it is a major. Grand slam is winning the 4 majors in a calendar year.
@PHShriver
Pammy you know I respect you & I admire Sally Jenkins' writing but Wimbledon & the LTA broke their own rules of no discrimination. Also, were players from allied nations banned after the invasion of Iraq? I'm disgusted by the war but existing sports bans have led to zero changes
I'm not understanding the reasons why anyone can't accept that
@ashbarty
just wants to retire. Why is there a belief there is some underlying reason? Can't someone just decide "ok that's it I've had enough, I've achieved what I wanted"? Just accept it and stop the delving.
So excited. After the last five weeks in hospital following falling badly on Brickell Ave, Miami on 29 March which resulted in major surgery on my right shoulder in Sydney, I am able to go home. Still have a sling but way better situation than I've recently been through.

@janniksin
has beaten Novak Djokovic for the second time in about two weeks. The last player to beat Djokovic twice in 2 weeks was
@NickKyrgios
in 2017 in Acapulco and Indian Wells.
@andy_murray
How about some of the local media take responsibility? She had the mental strength to get as far as she did. She's 18, never been in this situation, it comes with experience. Stick to what you know Piers, walking off TV sets. Don't think you handled that pressure, you quit.
Give me a break. Now nick kyrgios is being given a hard time because he wasn't wearing a helmet riding a scooter. I have not seen one person wearing a helmet on these scooters. Because it's him, have a dig. 🤷♂️🤦🚴♂️
Just had a chat with Bernie Tomic here in Chengdu. He is so excited with this win. Said he always believed in himself when most others did not and he said the jungle was a reality check for him. This was a huge effort from him. 1st title in 3yrs, up to 76, was about 250 in May.
Seriously ... the Djokovic mother and father going on that their son is being treated like a prisoner because he's in a quarantine hotel for 3 days. Try 14 days like some have done and others I know have done multiple times.
It's been my toughest Wimbledon to work since I first attended in 1984 for obvious reasons but on a cloudy Saturday
@ashbarty
made every second worth it. One of my proudest moments being onsite & live on the news on
@2GBNews
@NewsTalk4BC
@3AW693
@6PR
the moment she won Wimbledon.
SHE'S DONE IT!
@ashbar96
is into the semis of the French Open. It is her first time in the last 4 of a major and she is the first Australian to get so far since Sam Stosur in 2016. Barty has beaten Madison Keys 63 75
Player-coach split between Novak Djokovic and Marian Vajda, and it appears Marian could be in line to work with Andy Murray. Sorry I was not clear enough that it is an indication.
I remain proud and excited to know that I am the only Australian media person to have been at every one of
@ashbarty
victories at the majors 2019 French Open, 2021 Wimbledon and 2022 Australian Open.
Irrespective what people say about .
@NickKyrgios
he has people talking about tennis and that can only be a good thing. When he is on court you know you are in for an amazing ride. It's entertainment.
Not only has
@rogerfederer
become the oldest man to reach the world No.1 ranking but he has set a new record for the longest gap between periods at No.1, over five years. He will start his 303rd week at the top officially on Monday, a men's record.
Just been reminded, today is Stefan Edberg's birthday, he is 55 and looks the same. If only there were more Stefan Edberg's, one of the nicest people I know.
He's done it! After all the years of injuries, at last,
@TKokkinakis
has won his first career title and he's done it in his hometown. Thanasi has won the Adelaide International beating Arthur Rinderknech 67 76 63. This win is just the best and deserved.
JUST IN: Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Adelaide event with blisters on his right hand. He is replaced by Filip Krajinovic. It is not likely that the issue will affect Djokovic's other scheduled events
For 35 years or so I've been coming to Wimbledon. Excitement never wanes but when you are working its like an office. Then you hear fans who see the centre court for the first time and they gasp. You are jolted back to once more realising and appreciating how special it is.
Oh so gutted to hear of the passing of Australian Peter McNamara. What a lovely man and such a wonderful player who reached no7 in the world in singles and with Paul McNamee were a legendary doubles team, the Super Macs. He was only 64. Way too young. Very sad. RIP Macca.
Wow... What an upset! The Special K's
@NickKyrgios
and
@TKokkinakis
the bros, have stunned the top seeds in the doubles Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 76 63 in the 2nd round.
WHAT A PERFORMANCE AND WHAT A COMEBACK!
@JasonMKubler
has beaten Dan Evans in the most incredible manner
@UnitedCupTennis
In the second Kubler was 0-5, he won 5 straight games and won 7 of 8 games and in the breaker was 0-2 and won 7 of 8 points for 63 76
Thank you to all for the get well wishes. It is appreciated. I feel okay (except for raspy voice) and hopefully it stays that way. I'm still working on covering the Australian Open. Due to be back in circulation on saturday in time for the finals.
The other day Ion Tiriac said Ash Barty had only one merit, she was Australian then added Australians cant read or write. What now Mr. Tiriac? She has the following merits: 1. Australian 2. world No.1 3. French Op champ 4. all-round lovely person 5. she reads and writes very well
