sad news today. Beeftongue, slug beloved, is no more. it lived just over a year, a good long time for a Florida leatherleaf, and tasted dozens of lettuces and other delicious vegetation beyond any slug’s dreams. I was honored to share some time with this awesome beast.

@mightbekaren it is spread through other isopods eating an infected isopod corpse after the virus kills it. anecdotal evidence suggests it can be tricky to deliberately infect isopods in captivity or in warmer temperatures, but don’t be surprised if you see a few more IIV isopods here & there

once infected with isopod iridiovirus (IIV-31) a terrestrial isopod will turn a shocking purplish blue, a result of the virus particles gathering under its exoskeleton. it will soon die and other isopods may scavenge its carcass, spreading the virus further

I saw a cicada molting this morning, and was so worried she’d get eaten by a bird (usually they molt at night for safety, she must’ve got up late). when I came back to check, she’d fallen from her perch, so I brought her inside to finish hardening.
