WE WON A GLAAD!!!!!!! ๐ณ๏ธโ๐๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธโจโจ
DOCTOR APHRA won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book this year!! So proud of our team and the stories we got to tell.
Thank you so much for all of your support!!!
Dropping toxic friends is one of the best things you can do for yourself. If that person always makes you upset, unhappy, uneasy, angry, & likes to rile you up? If youโre scared of them? Listen to your gut. Thatโs some bad shit.
I see that โIf What You Want to Read Doesnโt Exist, Make It Yourself!โ ethos & respect it, but sometimes I just want to go out to eat instead of always cooking my own damn dinner
Hey folks, I've been seeing some tweets circulating that are falsely attributed to me. Those are not my words. I have enormous respect for Stan Lee and his legacy, and I wouldn't be working for Marvel if I didn't.
If you donโt like a book, you donโt have to finish it. โIt gets better later onโ is a symptom of poor craft & a terrible reason to be miserable for +100 pages
GUESS WHO'S THE NEW WRITER ON

!!! I'm so excited to join the team & learn from all of the passionate, creative folks at Blizzard!! โ๏ธ๐โ๏ธ

It always bothers me when a central conflict between characters could be solved if they just had one goddamn conversation with each other.
Characters talking to each other should complicate the conflict, not fix it.
I am obsessed with two (2) types of fictional relationships: "you were never good for me, but I loved you more than anything," and "you were the best thing that ever happened to me, and I destroyed that with my own hands (possibly on purpose)"
I'M! WRITING! IRON FIST!!!!!! ๐๐ผ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ AHHHHHH!!!!

pleased to announce that, after an mfa, several awards, & years of professional writing, "I just think it's neat" is still a perfectly good reason to write a story
Bubbline is my forever shipโso much so that when I was invited to do an AT comic in the Fionna & Cake universe, I knew who I wanted the story to be about. Thank you

Today was my last day at Blizzard! โ๏ธ I had such a lovely time! It was an honor to build story with two awesome teams: the Overwatch Game Dev Team + Story & Franchise Development. Thank you for having me & I canโt wait for OW2! ๐งก๐ค๐ค
Writing is obsessing over an obscure world building detail for a week, only to have a major story revelation that renders it totally moot
...until, months later, that detail turns out to be the key to the next big story arc & you realize YOU DIDNโT WASTE ALL THAT TIME AFTER ALL

on what lies ahead for the galaxyโs shadiest archaeologist:
My friends & I were debating whether we'd become vampires if given the choice, & when I said, "Iโd do it for the health benefits, job freedom, and possibility of buying a house in the future," I realized I had finally, truly become a millennial
Was told to make a young woman protagonist who eats murderous men "more likable" if I wanted people to read it.
She seemed pretty likable to me, so I declined.
That story was Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers, and it won a Nebula and World Fantasy Award lol
I cannot, & will not attempt to, warm the entire internet with my sparkles. & if you think I'm cold bc I won't automatically, unquestioningly do your emotional work for you, then I guess I'm a fucking glacier.
As a kid, my reading was so restricted and monitored (so I wouldn't be "corrupted by the world") that I had to steal library books so they wouldn't show on my Checked Out record.
Kids need access to material that helps them grow... esp. when they're deliberately kept from it.
Man. The extent to which a lot of adults seem to think kids have all this agency, like they can just go to a bookstore or a public library without their adult taking them, that they have money to buy things, that they arenโt being closely watched and penalized.
But when you inevitably say no (because you should never say yes to everything! oh my god!), people automatically assume that your niceness was fake, or that you're cold, or that you hate them. Which is to say, they take it personally. And that is their own goddamn mistake.
When you're a woman, &/or nb femme, people expect you to do a lot of work for them & carry a lot of emotional burdens for them. This happens especially if you happen to be "nice" or "sweet" or "cute."
โจ๐ค GUESS WHO'S WRITING SYMBIOTES!!! ๐คโจ I've loved these weird, nasty aliens since I was a kid, and I'm so stoked to write Riot, one of the (extremely beefy) Life Foundation symbiotes, for Extreme Carnage!
Marvel's next symbiote-focused event, Extreme Carnage, unleashes Life Foundation symbiote Riot on the Marvel Universe in a new one-shot by Alyssa Wong and Fran Galan.

Something that will always make me livid is people sniping at young &/or early career authors bc โtheyโre newbies & donโt know anything.โ
There are no Dues To Pay before you can write. Anyone who says otherwise is jealous, bitter, & should prob be focusing on their own damn work.
It doesn't matter if they've only met you once, or only met you online. People see "Oh, she's a nice girl" & assume approachability. Or they mistake approachability for a deeper relationship than you actually have, & that's when things get ugly.
Went to my local comic book store to get a copy of Legend of Shang-Chi... but it was sold out! ๐ณ Thank you for supporting the comic and I hope you enjoy it!
Happy birthday to me! Iโm 29 today! I realized Iโve been writing professionally for almost a decade now (geez!), & Iโm so excited to see what my writing will be like by the time I hit 40. โจ
ANYWAY LOOK AT MY CUTE RAINBOW CAKE ๐๐๐๐
Paul Krueger did this to me, too. He used my name to gain access to spaces & people. At the same time, he manipulated & isolated me, driving wedges between my personal & professional relationships. He hurt me a lot, & Iโm still dealing with that damage.
SHE'S HERE!! It was such an honor to create a new Filipino-American character for Marvel with
@Astrolimes
&
@AlannaWrites
. Like the other local "Caps" in
#USofCAP
, Ari draws inspiration from Captain America... by which I mean Bucky Barnes โญ๏ธ๐ฅ
You deserve better. Protect yourself & invest in yourself.
Itโs hard to leave friends, especially if the good times were really good. But if theyโre not being a good friend to you, you have to be that person to yourself.
The best way to punch professional jealousy in the face is to put your head down & focus on your own work. Also, have a range of interests outside of your industry so you don't get tunnel vision.
If/when people tell you this shit, it's bc they saw "nice" & assumed, "This person is nice & therefore I can have them in some way. Look, they are so accommodating."
The assumptions they put on you are their own problem. But when you say no, they're determined to make it yours.
I have people I don't know demanding shit from me all the time. Whether it's access to my body ("I'm gonna boop your nose!") or emotional labor ("Hey can you ask so-&-so why they're mad at me?") or just labor ("Can you do me me a favor?")
Toxic friendships take many forms. They can be addictive & exhilarating until they turn bad. They can be codependent, where you feel like if you leave them, theyโll spiral out of control. Theyโre about control & abuse.
There are a billion reasons, btw, to say no to anyone. Maybe you're too busy, or you don't know that person very well, or you just don't want to do it? All of these things are valid.
When I'm underwater with deadlines & projects, I focus on the work & disappear for a while.
Glad to see so many Marvel editors and staff participating in
#DisneyWalkout
today. Thank you for standing up for us. ๐๐ณ๏ธโ๐๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ
Something that folks who wail about Identity Politics in Fiction don't understand is that writing characters who share your marginalizations can be really, really nerve-wracking--in part bc doing it well requires vulnerability, & in part bc we're conditioned not to do it.
This is fucking horrifying. And it's dangerous--outing people is a violation that can put them at risk, especially if they live in a hostile environment.
NC fam, call your state representatives and tell them NOT TODAY, SATAN
A North Carolina bill would "compel state employees to immediately notify parents in writing if their child displays โgender nonconformityโ or expresses a desire to be treated in a way that is incompatible with the gender they were assigned at birth"
The cool thing about writing in a secondary world is that you can choose to include or exclude whatever you want.
Want to write a world without homophobia, where everyone's chilled out about gender? You can do that!
A new era means new challenges and, of course, a new costume. ๐ฅ

takes off this October. Find out more here:
If you feel like youโre chasing a high youโve lost, if youโre staying out of loyalty or fear rather than bc that person makes you feel cares for... those are really big signs you need to get out.
If you feel like you need them to tell you who you are, or fear retaliation if you donโt act a certain way, or youโve watched them drag other people they say they care about & are dreading being next... time to pack up & get out.
โMarginalized writers should not be expected to share their painful experiences with strangers for the sake of sales.โ
God, does it get any more real than this?
Met a very nice neighbor who gave us cucumbers!
When we were like "oh are you sure? we wouldn't want to impos--" he looked at us with the desperation of a man whose garden is in full Southern summer bloom and said "please. Please take them"
Being a writer means constantly teetering on the precipice between "what is the best way to systematically destroy these characters for maximum impact" & "please protect my idiot son"
Good morning! I woke up to a big response to our new Fil Am hero, and I'd like to thank you for sharing your voices with us.
I'd also like to clarify something about her full name, which is Arielle Agbayani. She's named after a few Fil Am friends, with help from my Fil Am fam.
WE'RE GETTING A SPIRIT WORLD MINI-SERIES!!! ๐ฅโ๏ธ๐ฎ

If the things your friend does or says to you constantly make you feel worse about yourself, or make you afraid to share your accomplishments... that person is not your friend.

Tell your folks you love them. Look after for each other, and please, please support your Asian friends and loved ones.
If a story is boring, complicate the characters. If everyoneโs at least a little messy (preferably a lot imo), theyโll move in interesting, unexpected ways.
โโโLoveโโโ the idea that you have to be out to write queer stories, and by love, I mean hate, because itโs absolute bullshit ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ Not everyone has the social or personal safety to be out. And it is also, quite frankly, no oneโs goddamn business
