Excited to announce my paper with @emilyommundsen , “Partisan Appeals to Bipartisanship” is out in @PolBehavior ! The big takeaway is that partisan counter messages from MCs can effectively undermine bipartisan appeals from the majority 1/n

Excited to share a new project at #polmeth40 !! @colinrcase and I pair word embeddings with an original corpus of candidate campaign positions to estimate candidates’ ideological positioning on policy issues (e.g., abortion, healthcare, trade…) See some initial takeaways below:

Watching the communication strategy of the "No's" on the debt ceiling vote will be interesting in the coming days. If you are wondering why members would openly criticize a "bipartisan" agreement, check out our paper!

As @colinrcase and I find in our forthcoming @PolBehavior piece, the minority party can successfully undermine public support for bipartisan legislation when they employ counter messages

Well deserved - @ArthurLupia supervised my thesis even after taking his current position in DC. Despite a busy schedule and only being in Ann Arbor two weekdays a month, he always set aside time for us to meet. I could not be more grateful for his advice and support. Congrats!

Lack of name recognition creates opportunity for growth in support by simply introducing voters to a candidate. On the flip side, better name recognition and lower support make a campaign's job significantly harder. Name recognition -> voters already have an opinion

Some context for Harris's departure: Despite being better known than candidates like Buttigieg, she was doing worse in both the Democratic primary and in general election polls against Trump.

Both @PetersonUtah and @SpencerJCox set an example for the nation. Take their lead, and remember it is possible to disagree without hating one another. Win or lose, it is crucial we start to come together to solve the issues facing Americans on both sides of the aisle.

I’m not sure this has ever been done before...but as our national political dialogue continues to decline, my opponent @PetersonUtah and I decided to try something different. We can disagree without hating each other. Let’s make Utah an example to the nation. #StandUnited #utpol

Iowa voters pick primary candidates like they pick what beer to drink, what sports team to root for, or what music to listen to. Check out our article in @monkeycageblog for more

@BrianCase_ The images are powerful, but I worry they still won't shift opinion. Similar to images used of polar bears, it is hard to get mass public to draw correct conclusions from images. Dems/Scientists still face an uphill battle in conveying the realities and dangers of climate change.

Our results suggest majority-party MCs must build broad coalitions to increase support for legislation. Minority-party MCs, however, always face an incentive to counter these claims and undermine public support 7/n

We suggest that the minority party’s incentive to discredit the majority’s claims of bipartisanship, along with the media’s amplification of this negative rhetoric, is yet another reason why the public perceives Congress as a partisan institution, incapable of compromise 8/n
