Some extraordinary data here on SUVs - their size, weight, how they're taking over the Irish car market & undoing the gains from EVs & what might put the brakes on them - insights from

Many of the SUVs are EVs which also have extra weight again with the batteries. TBH here in Carrigaline, in the main I am seeing lots of SUVs in car parks etc, many of them EVs. Sometimes I wonder WHY, in urban areas do you need this size of vehicle, getting bigger & bigger

It's difficult to see what their problem is.
They seem to have a vendetta against cars and particularly the SUV, making no differentiation between European *compact* SUVs and 4 litre American behemoths.
And completely ignored is the decline in emissions with EV uptake:

Great article! Has Ireland become the 51st US State? 🙋♂️Without a debate, or referendum😕This sadly could give fuel to those who would like a fire.😢 It would be nice if we even tried to follow France and Norway on this one, and other European States, if even just a little.

So it seems that there's some deliberate melding of statistics here.
The Committee was presented with US data, with no mention of lower US vs EU passenger collision standards, and zero balance regarding the improved safety for drivers and occupants.

Absolute nonsense. The weight of the car has already been accounted for in the vrt taxation which is co2 derived and of course affected by weight. Heavier cars emit more co2 and are therefore already excessively taxed. This would add a 3rd tax to the car. Nanny state nonsense

Do any of you so called experts actually do any investigating before jumping on the daily bandwagon, when so called experts use words like they ‘think’ means there is no evidence and they are expressing a personal view, time to do your job and not follow the pack

It's funny how the solution is always more tax. How about letting people make their own decisions on what they need. Also, my parents' 2.5L SUV uses about 33% less fuel than my 1.4L saloon. This argument is nothing more than jealousy.

Poor article. Electric/hybrid cars/SUVs are far heavier than equivalent sized ICE cars/SUVs so are arguably more dangerous. My ICE crossover weighs less than a Tesla 3, has protection for pedestrians in case of impact, and has camera detection for pedestrians plus auto braking.
