1) Samashki: The Samashki massacre happened during the first war. Drunk OMON, SOBR and Vityaz troops executed, raped and tortured Chechens. They also looted and burned houses with living people in it. (100+ dead)
Today we mourn with our Circassian brothers and sisters. 21st of May marks the Circassian genocide, in which they were systematically killed, expelled, starved and many more things.

It was one of the many mopping-ups (zachistka) by the Russian army against Chechen civilians. The killing spree included rape, arson & robbery.

Chechen elderly woman Sanu Mamoyeva, 89 years old.
„And I wanted to say one more thing: I received a certificate from the prosecutor's office in Kazakhstan stating that I had been
rehabilitated and…
There’s a different Chechen tradition which I also really like — a woman could stop any raging fight, just by dropping her headscarf between two men. They had to look away out of respect to the woman.
Chechen fighter Musa Baskhanov, also called „Cyborg“.
He lost half of his face while standing in a line, with other men, to stop a Russian helicopter. However, the helicopter crashed and the propeller hit his face.
The day I had to leave my country
On the 23rd of February 1944, Stalin and Beria decided to deport the whole population of Chechnya and Ingushetia to Central Asia. Despite their loved ones standing on the front, for the USSR, they were still declared as „enemies" of the nation.
Tower complex in Puogha (Puoga), Maysta, mountainous Chechnya.
The tower complex consists of 6 combat towers and multiple residential ones. It was probably built during medieval times, like every other tower in Chechnya.
2003 the United Nations declared Grozny as the most destroyed city on earth and I personally think it’s fair enough to categorize this „war“ as a genocide against the Chechen people.
With that being said — Don‘t cry, don‘t break and don‘t forget nor forgive.
May 1995 during a Russian air raid, Shamil Basayev lost eleven family members. His mother, his two children, his brother and his sister were killed that day. After this, he became the first Chechen to take revenge outside of Chechnya. More specifically in Budyennovsk.

„Russian officials typically characterised the marketplace as "an ammunition market" and "terrorist headquarters"
At least 200k people were victim, keep in mind that the population of Chechnya was maybe less than one million. Some were only released after their families paid large amounts of money. Dead people were even more expensive.

Elza was a 17 year old Chechen teenager when the Russian colonel Yuri Budanov abducted her at night and then raped, beat and murdered her.
There is a old chechen tradition which I really like.
If a woman is going past a group of men, the men have to speak loud so she knows they aren’t talking about her, the woman will keep her dignity and be reassured.
Historians say that 500k-700k lost their lives, Russian sources only claim 400k, even though there is enough evidence that there were more.
In short, 97% of the Circassian population was either killed or expelled and Russia still denies it.
9) Staropromyslovsky, Grozny: 1999 Russian soldiers executed 40+ Chechen civilians from a close range. Main victims were women, children and elderly people.
The idea to film this was from a Russian junior officer because according to him it was a opportunity to free him from the nightmares which continue to haunt him.
According to Politkovskaja it was like a scene from a movie about the Nazi concentration camps.
Did you know that the Russians planned to deport us again in the 90s? Alla Dudayeva, wife of the first president Dzhokhar Dudayev, wrote about this plan in her book about her husband.
It was planned to deport 70% of the disloyal Chechens. In short - another genocide.
The story of my grandmother‘s family (1944)

That’s just 10% of what happened in Chechnya.
Women were torn in two pieces with Russian tanks, because the soldiers „just needed it“, Russian guards were allowed to do whatever they want with Chechen detainees at night and many more atrocities.
13) Nura Luluyeva: 1960-2000
2000 Russian FSB members raided the market place where Luluyeva and her cousin were selling strawberries. They abducted them to an unknown place. 2001 dead bodies of missing women were found in an abandoned summer house.
Maryam Sarakaeva — the first Chechen journalist.
Sarakaeva graduated from the first Women‘s Gymnasium in Grozny and also spoke fluently in many languages. She and her husband, Ibrahim-Bek Sarakaev, also took an active part in the creation and work of the newspaper „Serlo“.
The bodies showed clear signs of torture, many of them were blindfolded and had their arms bound behind their back. Several were also booby-trapped. Luluyevas body showed that she died from multiple strong blows to the head.
15) The illegal arrest of two brothers: March 2006 Sulim S. was on his way to work when 10 men stopped him and abducted him. The description of the torture by Sulim:
The historian Dalkhan Khozhayev was a legendary figure, warrior and an intellectual who has written many works about the 400-year war between Chechnya and Russia.
Thanks to everyone for 3.000 followers!
I still can't believe that so many are interested in the culture and history of my people! I am also very grateful for everyone I met here and how much I learned about other peoples heritage. ❤️
There are over millions of Circassians now scattered all over the world, many want to return to their ancestral home but this process is made difficult, almost impossible, for the Circassians.
We still hope and wait for their return home.
16) The Elephant: The Elephant is a gas mask which was used by Russian soldiers to torture and humiliate Chechens. They‘d cuff their hands behind their backs and then close off the breathing tube. Some survivors say that this was the worst method.
Cult of „Mekhk-Nana“ (Mother of the land)
Up until the late medieval ages there was a cult of „Mekhk-Nan“ with an agricultural cycle. On the outskirts of the ancient village Nikaroy, there was a place dedicated to „Merk Nana“ (Dialect), there was also a temple.
On this day, 28 years ago, the Russian army started a zachistka in the small village Samashki. Mopping ups always had a genocidal intent, they included arson, rape, mass murder etc.
According to Chechen sources 300+ were killed in cold blood.
A survivors story:
"It's hard to be a Chechen. If you are a Chechen, you have to host your enemy when he comes as a guest. You must die without hesitation for the honor of a girl.
You have to leave the last piece of bread to your friend.
On the 11th december 1994 the beginning of the end started. On this day the first Russian-Chechen war started. A war that could’ve been prevented in many ways and thus, many souls could’ve been spared. The war in Chechnya resulted in 80k-100k dead people and 500k displaced.
The Circassian Coordination Council’s application for a permit to hold a Memorial Day rally on May 21 in Nalchik has been denied by the authorities again. The group is one of very few that remain independent in Circassia, most are fully controlled by the FSB. Abt rights in Russia
I‘ve been translating Chechen legends/folk stories to English for a while now. It will take me a few days but looks like I‘m done soon. Is there anything you guys wanna read? There is not much about Chechens/Chechnya in English and I‘d like to change that (somehow)

14 years old Chechen girl Malika Chikueva before she was arrested in 1945 and sentenced to 9 years in a gulag. She was arrested for her anti-Stalin songs, which she played on her accordion.
In 1954, 1 year after Stalin's death, she was finally allowed to go back to her mother.
Gravestones with a typical Chechen ornament.
This is a form of Arabic calligraphy unique to Chechens, these type of ornaments were invented by Chechens in the late 19th century to early 20th. If you look closely you can see the different names of Allah in the form of a Swastika.
The highly sought-after Chechen Borz submachine gun is an excellent example of a small, inexpensive and simple submachine gun that has proven itself in close combat. (Thread)
In the summer of 1825, the Russian imperial army deceived elders from all over Chechnya, by gathering them in Gerzel-Aul, telling them that Yermolov wanted to make peace. However, Yermolov did not show up.
The situation in Chechnya is terrible. People are being forcefully drafted since there are barely volunteers. My thoughts are with the people in Chechnya who are against this war and recruited against their will. Please look at the ages, they’re in the same age as me and younger
A Chechen woman singing about the bravery of Chechen warriors on a dechig-pondar, 1995.
„Hey, warrior who do you belong to? You warrior, you’re a Q‘onakh. You love your home so much, your thoughts are so pure,..“

Chechen sheikh and anti-Soviet movement leader Ali Mitaev.
First Ali Mitaev sided with the Bolsheviks, because he was promised that the Chechens would receive religious freedom and autonomy. However, it turned out to be a lie.
Masks in the Caucasus - little thread.
In Chechnya, these masks often appear at weddings. They are there to draw all the attention to themselves, so that no one else will be victim of an evil eye (B'arg). In Chechnya they are also called Zhukhargsh, which means clowns.
