In Canada COVID-19 infections are at 281 per 100,000 residents with a fatality rate of 8.2%. In NB a result like that would have meant 2,194 infections so far and 180 deaths. Instead the province is at 166 cases and 2 deaths. Remarkable really. 📸: Alex Vietinghoff

New Brunswick cancelled rent-caps for tenants at the end of 2022 citing it as an impediment to developers wanting to build. It then finished a distant third in the Maritimes in housing starts in 2023 behind two rent-cap provinces.

New Brunswick is allowing oil companies to charge an extra 8 cents on gasoline and diesel to help pay for federal clean fuel regulations starting Friday. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador are only allowing 4 cents.

NDP vote drops below 2% after setting an all time high of 12.9% just six years ago. Leader MacKenzie Thomason polls just 1.3% personally in Fredericton North. Caitlin Grogan in Quispamsis leads candidates with 6%, doubling the party vote from 2018.

The annual carbon rebate in NB is $736 for a family of 4. That covers 100% of the carbon charge (plus HST) for 63.45 gigajoules of natural gas (NB's average household consumption) plus 3,000 ltrs of gasoline, or 4,472 ltrs of gasoline (plus HST) if you heat with electricity.

Cleaning out some stuff at the office and came across this 1989 relic. Probably the most New Brunswick story I ever did. It had Irvings, McCains and Richard Oland. Won no awards but it did attract a $2.5 million lawsuit served personally by legal legend Rod Gillis.

There were no changes on New Brunswick’s record furnace oil and diesel prices on Sunday after all. NB and NS diesel prices remain 58 cents apart even though they originate with similar New York trading numbers. I’m at a loss to explain it because I don’t understand it.

I am stunned by this. A 68 cent jump in diesel and heating oil prices overnight sends diesel soaring to over $3 per litre. I would expect this to be a one day only event with some kind of cut on Sunday, but holy Hannah what a shocker.

New figures show life expectancy in NB in 2022 dropped by a remarkable 1.14 years. It's the only decline of more than one year recorded among nine reporting provinces (PEI excluded). The effect dropped life expectancy in NB below 80 years for the first time since 2007.

The new $300 affordability benefit was only ever meant for employed people according to the New Brunswick government even though excluding seniors, social assistance recipients and others makes the goal of helping 250,000 households impossible.

The accelerated rebound continues in NB. The province gains 22,200 jobs in June on top of 16,800 added in May. As of June 20, NB had gotten back an estimated 78.6% of the nearly 50k jobs lost in March and April. That’s well ahead of the 41% of jobs recovered nationally so far.

Not sure who needs to know this but rent increase notices in NB (since December 18) require 6 months notice unless a tenant has a fixed term lease. If a notice went out December 31 for an April 1 increase chances are it is not valid. New rules here:

In a good news surprise (to me) gasoline prices in NB do NOT take a Sunday jump. So current maximum legal prices around the region for gasoline / diesel remain: Prov Gas / Diesel NS 165.5 / 173.8 NL 181.4 / 194.6 PEI 183.1 / 196.8 NB 188.8 / 200.6

There were 27,692 more New Brunswick women with at least one vaccine dose as of July 17 than New Brunswick men. In every age group except seniors, from teenagers to 60 year olds, rates among women are higher.

Little doubt that the Green Party is taking root on the east coast. It pulled 150,000 votes in the three Maritime provinces last night, triple the amount from 2015. It's vote share in PEI (20.8%) and in NB (17.0%) were its best two in the country - well ahead of BC (12.4%)

Over 8 weeks last September and October during a major COVID-19 outbreak in NB Statistics Canada estimates 218 people under the age of 45 died. It’s 171 more than normal for that age group but only a fraction show up in official COVID death counts.
