A well-preserved 45-metre stretch of the Appian Way under the McDonald's in Marino, southeast of Rome. The road was discovered in 2014 during the construction of the building. McDonald’s decided to sponsor the dig & worked with the archaeological authorities to preserve the road.

A solemn day for #Syria . The remains of heroic Syrian archaeologist Khaled Al-Asaad have been found near Palmyra today. Al-Asaad was beheaded at 83 by ISIS in 2015 for refusing to lead them to the locations of Palmyra’s hidden antiquities. He can now finally rest in peace.

Hot-water bottles in the shape of human body parts for therapeutic purposes. From Paphos, Cyprus, 1st c. BC - 1st c. AD. These clay vessels were filled with hot liquids (water or oil), and applied to the aching parts of the body in order to cause hyperaemia and relieve pain.

The gigantic hand found near the Temple of Hercules in Amman, Jordan. The hand belonged to a colossal statue of Hercules from the 2nd century AD. The statue is estimated to have stood over 13 metres high, making it one of the largest statues from Greco-Roman times.

The Arena of Pula in #Croatia is one of the six largest Roman amphitheatres and one of the best-preserved. It is also the only remaining amphitheatre to have four towers, designed to collect the scented water that was sprinkled on the spectators. Its capacity was 23,000.

The ancient city of Aizanoi in Phyrgia (western Turkey) is home to the incredibly well-preserved temple of Zeus. Its construction started in AD 92 and was completed by Hadrian. The temple is pseudodipteral, with 8 Ionic columns at the ends and 15 along the sides.

A highlight of my trip to #Egypt last February was the Tomb of Seti I in the Valley of the Kings! Discovered in 1817, KV17 is the longest and deepest of all the tombs in the valley (138 m) and contains beautifully preserved reliefs. It consists of 7 corridors and 11 chambers.

The Colchester Vase is a beautifully decorated cup with gladiatorial and hunting scenes discovered in a Roman grave. It dates from around AD 175 and was probably made in the Nene Valley Roman pottery industry near Colchester. It is one of the finest artefacts from Roman Britain.

A stretch of the Via delle Gallie, the Roman consular road that crossed the Aosta Valley into Gaul, preserved in Donnas (Italy). The remains include an arch carved out of the rock, a stretch of road 221 m long and 5 m wide and a milestone that marks XXXVI miles from Aosta.

This is the most recently discovered portrait of Hadrian. The bust, characterized by its excellent condition, was unearthed during archaeological excavations in 2014 at the Roman Villa of Los Torrejones in Spain. The 52 cm high marble sculpture is believed to date to AD 135.

Hello from Iran! I am standing in front of the stone lion of Hamadan. It was originally placed near a city gate and was possibly carved on the order of Alexander the Great to commemorate the death of his close companion Hephaestion in 324 BC, or as a talisman to protect the city.

The Arena of Pula in #Croatia is one of the six largest Roman amphitheatres and one of the best preserved. It is also the only remaining amphitheatre to have four towers, designed to collect the scented water that was sprinkled on the spectators. Its capacity was 23,000.

For #MuseumsUnlocked , two wonderful gilded bronze peacocks that originally decorated the Mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome. They are believed to have stood outside the mausoleum along the bronze fence that surrounded the monument. Now held in the New Wing of the Vatican Museums.
