RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT
Introducing
@SalarySwish
! An NBA equivalent to CapFriendly!
We're very excited to branch out into a new sport and have been preparing this for 4 yrs!
The most demoralizing aspect of running a free to use site like CapFriendly, which we are on-call for nearly 24/7, is seeing our data/screenshots used in articles without credit.
3rd party data in articles should be credited properly, regardless of which source/site it's from.
All trades are now entered, I am logging off!
Thanks everyone for your interest in CapFriendly over the past 4 days, it has been a fun, exciting (and sleep lacking) few days!
🍻😊
4 years ago today
#CapGeek
, the original salary cap site that gave us a brand new way to love hockey, went dark.
Of the 1536 active NHL contracts in our DB, 8% of them are still sourced as having come from CG
We remove our helmets & tap our sticks to the one who started it all.
One of best parts of running our free website was watching it grow and being used in various sports/news articles over the years.
It's frustrating to see so many articles published lately with 3rd party data but no mention of the source, regardless of what or where it came from.

have moved Tomas Hertl to LTIR in order to create the cap space needed to recall Jiri Patera.
They now have a total of $21,250,000 in LTIR relief.
Story time:
Kopitar's current 8 year max contract was signed shortly after CapFriendly & HockeysCap merged, which I look at as the start of CF going from hobby project to business.
It struck me when the extension was announced just how long I've been coding this site now.

#TSN
has signed pending FA Bob McKenzie to a 5 year contract extension that will take the veteran star reporter through to 2024-25.
The deal buys TSN 5 UFA years. AAV unknown at this time 😉
Another NHL season is in the books. Hard to believe that it's already been four years since we launched our site.
Thank you to all who visit & support CapFriendly year after year. It's been an absolute privilege doing what we do for the most passionate sports fans in the world.
Sources say contract talks between the St Louis Blues and Blues captain, Alex Pietrangelo have broken off. The team has advised Pietrangelo to pursue unrestricted free agency.
Highest NHL salaries for the 2024-25 season:
A Matthews (TOR) - $16.7M

end.
As was reported by
@ByScottPowers
today, we want to wish a huge congratulations to the founder of CapFriendly, Dominik Zrim, for being hired by the Chicago
#Blackhawks
as their Manager of Hockey Strategy!
Additional details 👇
A quick compare of the Ohtani contract vs the top (active) earning NHL players:
Shohei Ohtani: $700M / 10 years
~~~
Sidney Crosy: $141.3M / took 18 seasons to earn it
Alex Ovechkin: $138.2M / took 18 seasons to earn it
Evgeni Malkin: $126.7M / took 17 seasons to earn it
Tomas Hertl having retained salary means:
1. San Jose has ALREADY used all of their 3 retained slots next season
2. Has now used 2 slots until July 1, 2027
This significantly reduces their trade flexibility moving forward. A surprising move for a rebuilding team.
This is a first ever! The Vancouver
#Canucks
have a perfect LTIR upper limit of $82.5M. No Dollars wasted whatsoever!
Cap Hit: $86M
Cap Space: $0 ($3.5M in LTIR Use)
Roster: 22 (13F - 7D - 2G)
LTIR: Ferland ($3.5M)
After reverting the Dadonov trade, we now show
#Vegas
with only $405,833 in usable space remaining in their LTI Salary pool.
As a result they would now need to clear:
$4,844,167 to activate Martinez
$9,094,167 to activate Stone
They currently have a roster of 26
(15F - 9D - 2G)
Yesterday the
#Blackhawks
opened up $6,400,000 in cap space when they trade DeBrincat to OTT.
Today they got $5,538,462 added right back on to their salary cap.
Probably not what a team looking to weaponize their cap space this season expected to happen.
Teams have mastered maximizing their LTIR relief this year:
Dollars away from maximum relief:
$0 - VAN (A first ever perfect placement!)
$4 - TOR (The 2nd best ever)
$16 - VGK
$33 - TBL
$167 - EDM
Getting within a couple thousand is extremely hard, let alone a couple hundred.
Congratulations to Tom Poraszka, who founded the website General Fanager, the website we were competing with when we launched.
His talent was acquired by
#VegasBorn
in 2017 and his cap insight has been apparent to their success ever since.
Breaking:
#Yotes
lose one of their 3 retained salary (RS) slots for the next 8 years.
We recently learned that a buyout on a RS contract results in the original team losing a RS slot for the whole buyout duration
We've already updated the site to reflect that new understanding!
As we continue to add the last few trades, we wanted to give all of you, our users and fans, a big thank you for your interest in our site and the information we provide!
We had another record traffic day, and our shiny new cloud server handled it without a hitch!
👊👌🙏
Kyle Dubas was
#LeafsForever
GM for 5 years and 8 days.
In that time he:
-Signed 204 players to a total contract value of $628M
-Drafted 44 players
-Made 71 trades
NY Rangers selected Alexis Lafrenière 1st overall and gave him a max ELC deal worth $11.3m, however only $517.5k is guaranteed (SB + minor).
Minnesota T-wolves selected Anthony Edwards 1st overall yesterday. He'll sign a max RSC deal worth $44.2m of which $20.0m is guaranteed.
We’re extremely grateful for the interest in our website today, we can assure you that we prepared for the traffic today but our preparations underestimated just how much traffic we would receive. We have obliterated our previous traffic records. Apologies for the downtime
There are 5 players who've waived their No Move Clauses (NMC) for the Seattle Expansion Draft:
1. Milan Lucic
2. Jeff Skinner
3. Erik Johnson
4. Ben Bishop
5. Carey Price
There were only 2 players to waive their NMC in the Vegas Expansion:
1. Marc-André Fleury
2. Toby Enström
41 trades in the two weeks leading up to tomorrows deadline have now been made.
Over the past 10 years, the previous max was only 20.
We've more than doubled it!
If Marc-André Fleury decides to retire instead of playing this season in Chicago, his $7M cap hit will be completely removed.
Chicago will not have a cap hit charge due to Fleury in that scenario.
#Lightning
placed Nikita Kucherov on Long Term Injured Reserve today. The move gives Tampa Bay an additional $9,500,000 in their LTI Salary Relief pool.
Of note regarding Patrick Kane:
With Schneider reassigned, the
#NYR
have enough cap space today to acquire Kane at 75% retained.
They would have $30k in cap space remaining.
Tampa Bay's 1st RD pick this year will either be No. 19 or 20. However, that pick belongs to the Blackhawks.
The
#Lightning
don't have currently have a pick in the top 64 until 2025.
Thank you to everyone who showed an interest in CapFriendly today.
We obliterated our traffic records, and thankfully had no down-time in the process.
If you're interested in a summary of todays trades, they can be found using the trade-deadline filter:
To whoever massively scraped our site from 12:15 - 12:45.
We especially don't appreciate this during a day like today when resources are being heavily used.
If
#Leafs
assign G Michael Hutchinson to the minors, the trade will result in the same amount of cap hit coming in as going out.
Acquired: Campbell ($675k) and Clifford with 50% retained ($800k) = +$1.475M
Traded: Moore ($775k) and if they assign Hutchinson (700k) = -$1.475M
We've been working on something since October 2019 (almost 4 years in the works) and it's finally, FINALLY, nearly ready for release!
Out target date is mid-September.
Stay tuned! 🙂
On days like today, be sure to thank any up-and-coming hockey related resources that you appreciate.
In our early days when we first released CapFriendly, the encouragement we received from the hockey community heavily motivated us to keep pushing forward to where we are today.
Vegas currently has 5,738,333 available in LTI Salary. They need at least $10M to activate jack Eichel off LTIR.
There are only a few ways to do that.
1- Trade away +/- $4.3M in cap hit
2- Place another +/- $4.3M in cap hit on LTIR
3- Terminate +/- $4.3M in cap hit (unlikely)
How does this work?
The cap is calculated daily at 5pm. Teams can temporarily exceed the cap between 5pm spans.
Toronto can exceed the upper limit after 5pm today. Wait for waivers to clear tomorrow at 2pm, send those players down and be compliant for 5pm tomorrow.
Waiting until after 5pm ET to complete the Giordano trade would definitely provide some additional flexibility for the
#Leafs
in terms of creating the space needed to fit him under the cap.
It would give them the benefit of saving Clifford and Mrázek's cap space if they clear.
Patrice Bergeron, who announced his retirement today, has an estimated $96,324,048 in career earnings over his illustrious 20 year career.
As part of his new 5 year extension, Justin Herbert will earn $100,000,000 next season alone 😱🤯
There are a lot of big numbers in this big deal for Justin Herbert. Here's one: In Year 1, Herbert get $100M, topping the previous high of $80M.
Herbert also gets $218.7M in guarantees on his 5-year, $262.5M extension.
The first time I met Chris we chatted about the site and how overages work. He was always gracious with his time and happy to discuss the cap.
We developed a friendship over the years and often messaged each other to see how the other was doing.
Thinking of my friend today 💔
Tests yesterday confirmed that Chris will not wake up. In life, Chris offered his body to a clinical trial to help others. In death he will do the same. He remains on life support while organ donation is arranged. We are so proud of him.
In regards to the Vegas situation:
If the trade isn't approved, Dadonov's cap remains on VGK. If their LTI players become healthy, they must activate them
If they shed cap through a trade, the traded player isn't eligible to play in any NHL games for the remainder of the season
With the Avs elimination last night, forward Zach Parise will now retire.
The 39 year old played 19 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1254 games, and scoring 434 goals and 889 points in those games.
Parise has an estimated career earnings of $110,243,397, which is currently 13th
Keith Yandle, Zdeno Chara and P.K. Subban all announced their retirements today.
They played a combined 54 seasons and 3,977 NHL games (regular season and playoffs) .
Congratulations to all three players on their outstanding careers 👏
Samuel Blais
#NYR
1 year / 1-way extension
2022-23: $1,525,000
Rangers have signed Blais to a 1 year extension at just under his QO. He'll be a UFA when his new deal expires next summer.
Another successful day 1 of Free Agency is coming to an end!
We want to thank all of you for your support and interest in our website! What an awesome day, thank you very much!
