Just for fun: If Miami wanted to pair
@KDTrey5
w/
@Bam1of1
and
@JimmyButler
, they have the salaries to trade match pretty easily.
KD makes $44,119,845 next season, so Heat would need to send out at least $35,215,876.
Lowry ($28.3M) + Herro ($5.7M) + minimum ($1.75M) = $35.8M
What an offseason disasterclass for the Heat. Miami let their two biggest conference contenders get exponentially better by failing to get the Dame trade done. Their window is closing if not shut already.
The
@MiamiHEAT
are positioned to offer
@Goran_Dragic
two contracts while staying under luxury tax:
• 1-year (prorated): $820K ($518K cap hit)
• 2-years: ~$3.5M ($820K cap hit in 2022)
In both scenarios, Miami terminates Highsmith’s 10-day contract early to open roster spot.
Jimmy Butler, who goes into every year expressing belief his team will win a title, said just now: "This year is our year. We're going to go into this game 1 and do what we're supposed to do and be the first one to four. We are very capable of it. We have enough...
Taxpayer MLE is ~$6.4M. Miami has
@VicOladipo
’s bird rights and could easily offer more. I personally projected $10M. That’s a bad move if Miami doesn’t bring him back at that price.
“Victor Oladipo is not expected to return to the Heat and is said to have interest from Washington, Denver and Detroit, in the salary range of the taxpayer MLE.” (via Jake Fischer)
Per
@GregSylvander
, Miami is positioning itself to trade 4️⃣ first-round picks should Herro be sent to Nets for ‘25 first (via PHX).
They’d open up their own firsts to trade in:
• 2024
• 2025 (POR [1-14] or OKC [15-30])
• 2026 (OKC or POR if ‘25 didn’t convey)
• 2028
• 2030
a trade between portland & charlotte makes too much sense. heat should jump and make it a 3-teamer
•dame to miami
•herro+no.3 pick to charlotte
•no.2 pick+future heat & hornets first-rounders & expiring/filler contracts to portland
If I’m the Heat, I’m wondering why I need to trade both Herro and Jovic in this Dame trade. Blazers get to pick one. Might’ve had both if Cronin would’ve answered the phone earlier.
All buckets, no misses 🪣

I’m watching Game 7 of Raptors vs. Sixers on
@NBATV
and just now realizing Jimmy Butler has lost three-straight playoff series to the team that won the Finals. Not to mention all those years with the Bulls when he lost to the Big 3 Heat. Damn.
Notes on the Dedmon-Spurs trade:
• Miami is now $4.86M under luxury tax
• Two roster spots open (13 players under roster)
• Must add 14th player
• Flexibility to spend $4M MLE or $4.1 BAE
• Have 1️⃣ 2nd-round pick left to trade until 2029
• Signals another move is coming…
That’s a cap. Strus and Gabe wouldn’t be trade eligible until Jan. 15 had Miami re-signed them. They couldn’t just simply add them as “bargaining chips” for a Dame trade.
Plus, Micky Arison would be paying a luxury tax bill over $110M had that happened. Second-highest in NBA.
“Miami fucked up when [they let Strus & Vincent walk]. Those guys started. For negotiating purposes you [needed them]. You’re supposed to sign them back & then use them in a trade. Versus just letting them go now you don’t have those pieces as bargaining chips” -
@GilsArenaShow
Since 2010, Miami has only moved a 1st rounder in exchange for an all-star/all-nba player:
• Bosh
• LeBron
• Dragic
• Butler
If Miami is willing to deal a first – let alone multiple firsts – then they must be confident who they’re getting in return meets that criteria.
To this point, the last major Heat trade Miami has made that didn’t consist of a free agent sign-and-trade was Goran Dragic. If Pat lands Dame, all credit to him. But right now, he’s batting .000 in the Jimmy Butler era.
So according to all of you the Heat were in the drivers seat to get Beal and had all the assets to get it done
And yet the franchise didn’t do what they needed to do to get it done?
I wonder if there’s maybe a reason for that
Nope Heat must be incompetent!
For ESPN+: Portland’s choosing the market over Miami now, but there’s no assurance a better deal on Damian Lillard develops. The Blazers don’t need to love the Heat’s best package to ultimately accept it. That’s the Blazers’ battle. Can they find better?
If Miami has to take back Jusuf Nurkic ($16.87M) alongside Damian Lillard ($45.6M), Heat would have to send out at least $56.83M in salary to trade match at 110% during new league year.
Could get there easily by sending: Herro ($27M), Lowry ($29.68M), and one of Jovic/Highsmith.
If Lillard asks out, 2 mainsteam NBA writers have suggested Blazers could demand team take C Jusuf Nurkic contract (3 yrs, 54 M left). He's hurt a lot but a good player who developed 3 pt game last year. Would make Heat tax team for yrs. Fascinating to see what Heat would do then
Miami re-signing Oladipo to a 1-year, $11M deal is amazing for the Heat as they still keep his bird rights and add a mid-size expiring salary.
He’d be trade eligible on Jan. 15. Only caveat: Dipo must give consent to a trade since his Bird Rights do not transfer to a new team.
Miami is now ~$2.13M under the luxury tax.
They’re able to sign Caleb Martin and a second veteran w/ 2+ years of experience to prorated minimums (~$575K).
As of right now, there are 13 players on the roster. Miami must sign a 14th player within the next two weeks.
Per
@teixeiraluis92
and myself, PJ Tucker can re-sign with Miami and earn a maximum of $26.46M over 3 years with his non-bird rights without the Heat having to use its non-taxpayer MLE. Tucker opted out of $7.35M.
Miami’s PJ Tucker will opt out of his $7.4 million player option for the 2022-23 season and enter free agency, sources tell
@TheAthletic
@Stadium
. Several championship contending teams are expected to compete for Tucker, who was a key part of Milwaukee’s title run in 2021.
The fact that DeMar DeRozan is still on the market and we’ve heard little about him is nothing but good news for Miami in my opinion. The market is drying up. I’m sure he wants $20M but that seems unlikely. Heat might just convince him to take a 1-year pay-cut at about $10-13M.
blazers prepping a serious trade offer to miami for bam is the most unserious report. portland is flailing, fighting for their life. they know dame wants to play w/ bam. blazers set on keeping both dame & no.3. they think dame will fold & stay if they can show they atleast tried
• Miami generated a $9.45M trade exception.
• This trade exception expires a full year from when it was created (7/6/24).
• Heat can use it to bring in a player via trade or claim off waivers earning up to $100K more than its total.
One name to watch: Royce O’Neale ($9.5M)
OFFICIAL: The Miami HEAT have acquired a trade exception from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Victor Oladipo and second round picks in 2029 and 2030.
When the
@MiamiHeat
have their pitch with
@Giannis_An34
, Pat Riley should just replay this All-Star Game starting from the fourth quarter and let
@CoachSpo
criticize every Nick Nurse coaching decision.
What if I told you Miami could:
• Land both Jalen Brunson & John Collins
• Spend the full non-taxpayer MLE
• Plus the bi-annual
• And not just stay below the hard cap, but possibly below the luxury tax altogether?
Stay tuned tonight at 8 p.m. EST on
“The Clippers and Heat are expected to emerge in this process for (James) Harden, I’m told. Teams across the league understand a player like Harden will likely reach a preferred destination…”
NBA Insider
@ShamsCharania
updates us on James Harden.
So all in all, Miami was able to replace Omer Yurtseven ($2.8M starting salary on 2-year deal) w/ a cheaper and more accomplished backup center in Thomas Bryant ($2.5M starting salary on 2-year deal). Plus, they retained Orlando Robinson on a 2-year deal ($1.8M partial guarantee)
I’d cut Haywood Highsmith now and convert Jamal Cain to a standard three-year NBA contract at the minimum before he becomes Caleb 2.0. Save the trouble of using any exception money now.
Excited to announce I'm writing my first book! "Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA MVP," about the journey of Giannis Antetokounmpo, will be released August 10, 2021 by

Miami can still get up to about $10M for DeMar DeRozan while staying under the hard cap if they do a S&T. In my scenario, I used KZ Okpala as a sweetener. Still have bird rights on Iggy, Bjelica, Oladipo, & Nunn to do a double S&T. Miami would bypass remaining MLE & BAE.
San Antonio makes sense as a landing spot for Tyler Herro. Miami just dealt with SAS in another three-team deal for Strus.
Spurs have $26.1M in cap room to absorb most of Herro’s salary and multiple expirings, as well as first-round picks from other teams they can toss in deal.
A potential Portland-Miami deal for Damian Lillard would almost certainly include the involvement of a third team, league sources tell
@NBAonTNT
,
@BleacherReport
.
Fun fact: The
@BrooklynNets
are estimated to pay a $130.6M luxury tax bill for the 2021-22 season. The most the
@MiamiHEAT
were charged during the Big 3 era (2013-14 season) was $14.4M. For reference, Brooklyn paid $90.57M that same year, which was the highest at the time.
Nuclear option: Miami could waive-and-stretch KZ Okpala ($1.78M = $594,207 cap hit over 3 seasons) while being able to stay under the luxury tax to sign another veteran minimum contract w/ 2 years of experience or less.
Better yet, maybe a team claims KZ off waivers. No cap hit.
If the package from Miami for Dame is built around Herro, Jovic, & Lowry plus picks/swaps, per
@ShamsCharania
), then Heat would be sending out ~$59M in salary and can take back up to ~64.9M in a trade match (110%). Lillard makes ~$45.6M. Heat can absorb ~$19.2M additional salary.
Potential Damian Lillard trade package from the Heat to the Trail Blazers mentioned from Shams:
- “Perhaps a young player, like Nikola Jovic.”
- Expiring contracts: Kyle Lowry fits this criteria; potentially salary from third team.
- Three or four first-round picks, including
Official Review (Kirkland): if Strus' made field goal was a 2 or 3-point field goal in Q3 of
#BOSatMIA
. Ruling: Overturned to no basket as Strus alighted from out of bounds on his shot attempt.
Max Strus sign-and-trade notes:
• Heat create at least ~$7.3M trade exception = half of Strus’ potential ~$14.6M starting salary (5% raises) due to BYC.
• Cavs must send out ~$7.2M to match
• Cedi Osman ($6.7M) + Lamar Stevens (~$481K partial guarantee) to Spurs cap room
1/2
A Duncan Robinson for Jae Crowder and Torrey Craig deal would be the easiest and cleanest for Miami salary cap-wise.
Crowder and Craig’s expiring salaries would help Miami clear up a logjam at guard and save up to ~$31,000,000 potentially in a luxury tax bill in 2023-24.
Portland has a delusional front office if that’s how Cronin wants to treat their star player’s trade request. It’s Miami or bust. Cronin is just inviting this exit — of that franchise’s best player — to be messy. Riley might need to give him some advice (e.g., Wade departure).
Pat Riley clearly sees an opportunity to make a run with these Heat: Riley has been working to trade for Memphis' Andre Iguodala AND Oklahoma City's Danilo Gallinari, league sources tell ESPN. Talks are ongoing.
You can officially take the Spurs off the table for Lillard (not that it was ever serious to begin with). Wemby is nowhere damn near ready to help a 33-year-old Dame contend for a title.
Per
@ShamsCharania
, the
@MiamiHEAT
have been preparing a trade package for
@Dame_Lillard
which would include "around 3-to-4 first-round picks and pick swaps."
How can Miami open up 4️⃣ first-round picks? I break it down below.
RE: Caruso-Heat trade rumor:
Miami’s current tax bill is ~$28.7M.
Adding Caruso using Oladipo trade exception increases tax bill to ~$61.6M. Unlikely.
Trade matching would be ideal. Heat would need to send $8.6M in outgoing salary.
Do you trade Caleb, a minimum, plus a pick?
Reminder: NBA moratorium ends tomorrow at 12:01 p.m. ET (July 6). Free agent signings (not including vet minimum deals) and trades made during new league year cannot be
made official until then.
Soooo…if we don’t see Oladipo and Strus trades announced sometime tomorrow 🤔
The
@MiamiHEAT
could claim Cam Payne off waivers w/ either of their trade exceptions from Strus sign-and-trade deal w/ Cavs ($7.49M) OR Oladipo salary dump w/ OKC ($9.7M).
If Payne clears waivers, Miami could offer a 1-year vet minimum deal worth $2.89M ($2.01M against cap).
The Spurs acquired a future second-round pick and $5.6M for Payne in the July trade. Spurs have several young guards on roster that they’re building around now. Payne had a 31-point game vs. Nuggets in Game 6 of Western Semifinals.
Miami was down 7 at halftime the last time they played a Game 7 against Boston at home during the Big 3 era.
They tied the game at the end of the third quarter and went on a 28-15 run to close it out. Hope for a repeat of the same with Heat down 6 at the half 🙏🤞
I’d argue that Dame did the Blazers a massive favor after convincing him to sit all those games so they could strategically tank. He could’ve been stubborn, and they might not have Scoot rn. Least they can do is do right by Dame and be way more accommodating of his trade request.
If the Blazers shut Dame down the last 10 games of last season to soft tank…. why would they want Dame at the start of this season, screwing up their chances at the highest possible pick?
Best
@MiamiHEAT
win of the season for the sole fact they won not once but TWICE.
With Dedmon serving his 1-game suspension for tossing a massage gun on the court, it enabled Miami to fall an additional ~$16K below luxury tax line. They’re now ~$209K under (via
@teixeiraluis92
).
I don’t doubt
@flasportsbuzz
’s sources, but this would be an idiotic move. Taking on a $9.89M dead cap hit for 3 seasons straight instead of letting his contract expire makes zero sense. You’d trim $19.7M in 23-24, but would only have a small portion of $5M T-MLE to replace Lowry
If Miami gives PJ this deal, Heat are basically limited to giving Caleb $4M (bi-annual) and Dipo around $10M. No outside free agents unless it’s for the minimum, which Miami would need to either choose between waiving Highsmith (non-guaranteed deal) or tell UD to politely retire.
P.J. Tucker return to Heat shouldn't be ruled out yet, but sources say Tucker is seeking the $10.3 million midlevel exception and three years As
@IraHeatBeat
reported, Heat currently only willing to guarantee three years using non-Bird exception
In retrospect, Riley says Wade leaving was "like a cooling off period."
"When he left, there were some hard feelings on both sides, but they weren't lethal. We did not work it out the way he wanted it worked out, and that's our fault."
In this scenario, Heat would meet Stepien rule by holding firsts in:
• 2025 (via PHX)
• 2027 (own)
• 2029 (own)
Miami would also NOT need to amend the lottery protections on their 2025 protected first owed to OKC.
‘25 (via PHX), ‘27, and ‘29 picks can be sent as pick swaps
I'm all for
