Today on WHAT DO WE KNOW
@CJSR
, we're playing space and satellite songs, and my playlist will link up with the book I submitted last week. Live at 3pm MT. 🛰️👽
I found out yesterday that my tenure application was successful. It's a weird time for good news but a big thanks to all the colleagues, students, & staff who've been there along the way (at the UofA and beyond/before). Grateful to work with some really wonderful people. ♥️
Good news for people who like good news:

students voted to keep the
@cjsr
campus radio student fee intact. A nice win for student and community media. 💪
I'm deeply sorry to be breaking my no threads over five tweets rule but one thing to highlight re: the SiriusXM and the removal of CBC Radio 3 is that SXM must still have no less than 10% of channels be Canadian and 70% of the programming of these channels must be CAN. 1/12
At the start of this year I gave myself two goals before turning 40: to finish a (*rough*) book draft and to get over my rotator cuff injury and bench 225. I did both within the last month so all I had to do today was have mozzarella sticks and a beer for lunch.
When our son was 9 months he had near death anaphylaxis when trying peanut butter for the first time. At around 2, he could start allergy immunotherapy. Today he ate 17 peanuts in two hours, effectively passing the program. Huge day.
Spotify's Daniel Ek says that: "The artists today that are making it realise that it’s about creating a continuous engagement with their fans"
In speaking with independent Canadian artists, the ones who are doing this "effectively" have also made a link to mental health issues
In the last month: 4 cases of COVID, 24 days of isolation, 2 sick kids with RSV (each with a trip to the ER), 1 febrile seizure, 1 ambulance ride, 1 ear infection, 4 days total of childcare, 2 full time jobs. I think I'll have myself a beer.
Experimenting with a bit of ungrading and alternative assessments in the wake of ChatGPT by having students go to the emo music bingo night advertised on campus and if they beat me they get an A, and if they don't, they get an F
Over the past few years
@astrobri
,
@dewaard
, and myself have been working on a research project about independent music/ians in Canada in the streaming age. Our first of two forthcoming open access research articles on this subject is now available. ⬇️
On March 6th & 7th,

students should vote YES on the very small CJSR fee. The station is a vital node in local media & music circles & it's a great student service to get involved with. If you're an UG student, please spread the word and check out

It truly fucking sucks that we've lost/are losing alt weeklies and local arts writers but have city blogs that are like "5 new Garfield-themed hotspots to drink a socially distanced Drake-inspired aperol spritz this August"
We're very happy to have received a
@SSHRC_CRSH
Insight Grant to keep the
@Cult_Cap
research going. Over the new few years, we'll be working on "CanCon and its Digital Discontents: A Public Infrastructure Model for Canadian Music." Which means more tweeting about Big Wreck.
The letter Alberta wrote to the federal government Feb 5 asking for federal assistance to clear the Coutts blockade.
Alberta now launching legal challenge of emergencies act.

Youngest turned 3 last week and I was holding it together until getting hit this morning with these *two years ago* photos. Now I'm a crumpled pile of emotion.
Me and the lady will drive my V6 Jeep to the store that still gives out plastic bags. Then drink alcohol while cooking red meat on her gas stove. We're not bothering you, don't bother us.

I thought I was on top of things for the rest of this week and then I remembered I have to build a stage for a Taylor Swift birthday party for 4 year olds by Sunday
I don't find this to be entirely true but yes, so much of life for students is filtered through TikTok. One of the challenges of teaching media history but also why it's rewarding. And important.
No matter how dire the state of the world gets, there's always at least one thread on academic twitter that's like, "are backpacks serious?" or, "can we use pens?"
Five days left in second (nearly) consecutive isolation period. The toddlers are working together and wielding more power and influence. They're choosing the records now.
(I'm late to share but) At the recent
@iaspmca
conference, our article, Independent Canadian Music in the Streaming Age: The Sound from above (Critical Political Economy) and below (Ethnography of Musicians) won the Article/Chapter prize. We're honoured!
I was recently elected to the
@Alberta_Music
board of directors. I really welcome the opportunity to get more involved with Alberta music communities in this way.
Look at the replies to this.
The former premier knows what she’s doing - sowing mistrust in and inviting personal attacks on Alberta’s public health experts.
Irresponsible and pathetic.

It is imperative that they are not harassed or evicted. They must be allowed to protest peacefully. Your message to the community earlier today promised this. Keep your promise and let them be.
Just finished a draft of a very long thing I've been working on for like ten years but much more intensively over the last three years and then even more intensively over the last three weeks. So my dry January is over.
RIP. I crossed paths with him once at the Madison Sundance 608 theater and was amazed to see that he indeed had one of those clickers that bouncers use at the club to time the length of shots. Total devotion to the craft.
It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of David Bordwell. Professor Bordwell’s contributions to film theory and history have been instrumental in shaping our understanding of cinema as an art form and storytelling practice.
When talking about obsolete/nearly obsolete media with students, I always push back a bit when CDs and DVDs come up. But also, here's a DVD car my 3 yo made at daycare.
The University of Alberta has a full time, tenure track assistant professor job in Game Studies (in Digital Humanities and Media and Technology Studies).

First sabbatical drops tomorrow. I will spend time on a book project and reading books but I'd be curious to hear from others: what are you glad you did while on first sabbatical/what do you wish you did/or didn't do?
For the newest issue of
@FlowTV
I wrote about how media coverage of the streaming music economy privileges industry perspectives over artist perspectives. This reflects an imbalance of power between creators and big businesses in the music industries.
"Come work with me" is what you say to your high school buddies when there's a 100% chance they'll get a job at the same grocery store as you where there's an older guy who will get you a fake ID and another guy who steals deli chicken for everyone to share
Also, and last point, it's eye-opening to see the effects of one simple programming change like the removal of R3 on the larger music ecosystem in Canada. It shouldn't be that one channel holds so much financial importance. 11/12
I thought I'd end SCMS with some Chicago dogs but the store didn't have the right peppers and were clean out of hot dog buns (let alone poppy seed). Ah well, the online conference version of a Chicago dog.
Last lectures today, which is bittersweet b/c I have some writing to get to but classes and students have brought so much energy and insight to this tough year. And for the first time ever I had a student make a playlist of every song mentioned/played in class (at over 100 hrs).
Pleased to share that "The cultural capital project: Digital stewardship and sustainable monetization for Canadian independent musicians" has been funded by a
@SSHRC_CRSH
Insight Grant. We (
@astrobri

@dewaard
) look forward to working with 🇨🇦 artists over the next few years

day 1: You spent too much time with the NYT crossword this afternoon. The farmers market closed at 4 and you'll have to settle for Trader Joe's instead.
