We are open for submissions for our first issue until July 31!
Please RT this and share it with your friends, your enemies, strangers on the bus, and your sleep paralysis demons!

Something that totally blows about starting a new litmag is that people donโt have a previous issue to read to see if they fit the vibe of a publicationโฆIโm telling you now that if your piece even has a vibe, itโll fit in at Exposed Bone. Subs open til August 7!
Iโm definitely excited to publish people, but Iโm also excited to see where else they publish their work.
To see a contributorโs web of influence grow, connecting different places and expanding community, is amazing and should be celebrated.
Anyway, weโre open for subs!
I woke up to 503 followers today, so here it is!
We are opening submissions for our first issue on Monday, May 15!
Stay tuned for more information ๐
Running a mag can be very difficult at times, so just know that a comment, message, or even a like can go a long way for the ones running it. Let the mags you love know that you love them!
We are open for one more week!
Weโve received over 400 submissions, and weโre crazy excited about that.
Send us your work while you still canโsubmissions close at midnight (MST) on July 31st!
Here are our final numbers: We are publishing 21 pieces, 8 prose and 12 poems, out of the over 700 submissions we received for our first issueโฆthatโs a 3% acceptance rate! Thank you all for believing in Exposed Bone ๐ค
We have only received 4 submissions for the cover contest, so artists/photographers/etc have a great chance statistically to be the face of our first issue!
Is anyone submitting their first ever submission to us? First chance to be in print?
Remember that new writers are just as valid as established authors. Donโt let the imposter syndrome win!
Issue one stats for anyone curious:
Over 700 submissions, including nearly 500 poems and over 200 fiction pieces, from roughly 400 submitters!
In our last week open after the extension, we had over 150 submission with 40 submitted on the last day!
Thank you all so much ๐ค
First off, I want to thank everyone who submitted to usโit means the underworld that we have your trust.
Responses for issue 1 will go out early September. EB takes these decisions very seriously, going through multiple rounds to find what we believe to be best for the mag ๐ค
When we decided to start Exposed Bone, we made the promise that weโd only start it if weโd never go defunct, regardless of the time it takes or the money we loseโweโre here til we rot in our graves.
We have over 100 submissions already and itโs only been 15 days!
While that may seem high, itโs also low and means a higher acceptance rate if you submit for our first edition!
Exposed Bone will always be on Twitter unless it fully goes under. That being said, weโre going to be branching out onto other sites as well as a fail-safe. Tags and info coming when we have an update. Hopefully it all gets better soon.
Yes, it is sad having a piece pulled out of your submissions because it was published elsewhereโฆbut it should still be celebrated because that piece found its home!
Please remember that the writing community will always persevere.
There will always be writers. There will always be readers. No book ban or anything else can ever stop us.
Our submission inbox is going crazy, about 150 in the last couple of days alone, and weโre so close to our deadline extension if we reach 2000 followers!
Weโve put the Exposed Bone collective brain to good use and decided on the pieces we want to publish!
Weโre going to be reaching out, likely Monday, to authors and we will have final numbers to report once everything is verified!
Why did we name our mag โExposed Boneโ?
Well, the first two names we thought up were way too academic and didnโt actually mean anything, and then we found some words that just felt right togetherโand here we are.
TLDR: The words sound rad.
I think itโs important with the (bullshit) rise in AI to remind everyone that your writing is important because YOU wrote it and it is different and unique because of that. Keep writing. Always keep writing.
Our cover contest is live, so artists/photographers/designers/etc go submit your original, unpublished work (up to 3) for your chance to be on our first cover ever! No AI submissions, though. Ever. More information on our website! ๐ค
EB has learned a lot from our first open call so far and will be readjusting some aspects of our next call for sureโฆparticularly shortening the time we are open so we can read and respond faster, hopefully working towards two issues a year rather than just one!
Oh wow, itโs May. We open for submissions this month for Exposed Bone Vol. II!
We will have some updates guidelines from last go around, so make sure to pay attention to those!
I think we fixed Submission Manager!
Weโre going to be sending out responses again so we make sure everyone gets an official response. Feel free to ignore it if youโve received one already! There wonโt have been any changes.
Many of Exposed Boneโs staff are members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and we are proud to celebrate Pride this year.
If this is a problem for you, then youโre the problem.
New mags: your numbers are going to fluctuate, you will lose followers, have low liked/shared posts. Itโs not a linear processโjust keep doing your thing, work hard, stay positive.
Iโm curious, describe your writing environment.
Lights on or off? Music or no, and whatโs playing if so? Day or night? Writing on a whim or scheduled?
We arenโt going to have a certain number of fiction pieces or poems dedicated for the issue, just publishing the best of what we received. So it could be a book of poetry and one fiction piece, or a short story antho with a single poem (unlikely, but you get the idea).
Exposed Bone is committed to publishing and uplifting the voices of those from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, members of the LGBTQIA2+ community, and those from other disenfranchised or underrepresented groups.
I share our daily follower count with my co-EIC, and they lose their shit every time.
We are in awe at the over 600 of you that believe in us, just remember we believe in you too!
*attempts to claw my way out from under all of your amazing submissions*
Jokes aside, we have truly found some great pieces we hope to publish. Responses will be going out early September!
Decided that our followers are called bones in the pile.
If you want to join us and be a bone in the pile, give us a follow and send us some of your work!
Thank you to everyone so far whoโs trusted us with their piecesโ potential futureโฆweโre starting to read but submissions are still open until July 15!
I love stealing the staff from my undergrad lit magโjust acquired their latest graphic designer we can mold like a golem to design whatever we want mwahahaha
One of the readers couldnโt make it to a meeting, so we sacrificed them to hopefully boost sales when we launch.
Their ghost hasnโt missed a meeting sinceโฆconsidering doing this to all readers.
Here is our timeline for decisions on submissions:
We are starting to read this week and we will send out rejections/shortlists as we read through submissions.
Final decisions will be sent out sometime in August for what has made it into the issue!
Some may say selling my soul just to start a litmag wasnโt a smart decisionโฆbut Iโd do anything to be at home with you all in the writing community ๐ค
How much longer until I receive an imperceivable amount of money in a will from a relative Iโve never met to spend on publishing people? Iโm getting a little impatient.
Sometimes stepping away from a piece thatโs been rejected a couple of times for a minute can help you see where it can be improved. Personally dealing with this in my own work rn.
While the readers are reading, designers are beginning to work on some merch!
Weโre doing stickers and pin-back buttons for sure, but what else would you like to see?
I love getting other pressesโ issues/anthologies in the mailโwe know how much work goes into every aspect of printing, and seeing a beautiful product is so joyful and inspiring.
Reading helps your writing, but make sure youโre reading an expanse of forms/genres.
Comics, memoirs, sonnets, romance, fantasy, and everything in-between has something you can learn from to make your own writing better.
We were very lenient with submissions for this first issue, but know that weโll be strict and hold to our guidelines next open call.
If subs donโt fit our guidelines, we will ask you to resubmit or your work will not be considered!
We only have just over 20 cover submissions, so youโve got great odds of being chosen!
Subs technically close at midnight MST, in 9 hours, but will actually close when Shauri wakes up tomorrow. So gamble with hellfire by submitting late at your own risk! ๐
A lot of starting out as a mag is trial and error, which is fine if you arenโt employing demons like we are. Iโve sold so many of my body parts to those with horns and claws.
The Exposed Bone Volume I preorder is LIVE for three weeks, ending on March 26 at midnight MST.
For $16, you can get a print copy plus our sticker sheet at the link below!
If the link looks weird on mobileโฆmind ya business ๐ค
