Sorry, but this was political grandstanding. Roughly half the Niners knelt last week. How did Pence not anticipate this? Where are his adance people? This was political theater. In my humble opinion.
Welp, some personal news: The Athletic has let me go as part of a small wave of layoffs. But hell, it's been a good run, 41 years-plus of sports journalism, some of it damned good. I'm sad I don't get to walk away on my own terms, but that doesn't often happen. So...

On this bittersweet Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for the love and guidance of my wonderful father, who passed away yesterday afternoon. And I’m thankful my entire family made it to Tampa in time to say goodbye. His was a life well lived. He was my hero. I’ll miss him always.
I can't remember a worse regular-season Colts loss in their Indy history. Maybe you can think of one, but i can't, not with so much on the line. Total shitshow.
Colts owner Jim Irsay is paying for the funerals of linebacker Edwin Jackson and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe, who both died after being struck by a drunk driver early Sunday morning.
Per source, the Lakers-Pacers trade involving Russell Westbrook, Myles Turner, Buddy Hield and other assets is currently dead. That's not to say the Lakers can't come back and add a second first-round pick to the current package of picks, but for now, things are at a standstill.
Colts beat a Houston team that had won nine in a row. About to beat up a Dallas team that won five in a row. I'm telling you, nobody wants to see this Colts team in the playoffs.
Knocked off the No. 1 seed in the AFC last week. Knocked off the No. 1 seed in the NFC this week. With three-fifths of the O-line out (plus Fisher and Doyle). With several players, including two All Pros, out with COVID. Great defense, nice flashes from Wentz. Depth came through.

My first column:
People forget, Rivers was coming off a terrible year in 2019, but then, after some early turnover struggles, he had a very solid season here in Indy. What I’m saying is, don’t underestimate Frank Reich’s ability as a quarterback whisperer
DeForest Buckner is right: The thing that will determine the championship is which team best navigates the pandemic best in the next month or so. To the degree it can be navigated.
I’m not telling the Lakers how to operate, but it seems to me a second first rounder - in 2029, no less - is a reasonable price to pay as LeBron moves into the back end of his prime, plus you get two decent players while getting out from under the Westbrook contract.
I would love nothing better than to hear tonight's Pacers crowd yell "Boom Baby" every time Indiana knocks down a 3-point shot. And I'd love to hear it every game from hear on out. An Indiana icon has left us. My heart, all our hearts, are broken. Slick, man, he was the best.
We thought the Colts would struggle at left tackle. They are. We thought the lack of depth at receiver would be an issue. It has been. Brutal start for the Colts. Again.
Everybody hurts. For Jim Irsay, it’s been addiction. For me, it’s depression and occasional anxiety. We all have stuff. This might be the Colts most important initiative yet.
So Kevin Pritchard traded Paul George for two All Star players and he did it under duress, forced to make a deal when PG wanted out. Does this rate as one if the best trades in nba history?Certainly Pacers history. PG may go on to win a title, but still...

Never thought I'd see the day when Purdue would crush a great Ohio State team, but it just happened, 49-20, and the fans are rushing the field. Can't say I blame them. What a night for the Boilers.
If AR doesn't play tonight, it will be a major letdown for the fans who showed up anticipating their first look at Richardson. Instead, they'll get a lot of Minshew. I just don't get it. He's Anthony Richardson, a guy who played 13 college games, not Peyton Freaking Manning.
Basically the Colts have done this ass-backwards. If they were gonna bench Ryan at 3-3-1, they should have turned to Foles. Now, they should be turning to Ehlinger with the season completely lost.
There is little doubt in my mind that the Colts’ relatively low vaccination rate will have a huge impact on player availability all season, meaning Indy won’t have the kind of year most of us had expected. When so many of your leaders are unvaccinated, you’re asking for trouble.
BREAKING: NBA probed frightening post-game incident involving associates of Grizzlies' Ja Morant; red laser was pointed at Pacers team members.
@bkravitz
@Sam_Amick
with the findings and details.
Any way you slice it, Purdue underachieved. Didn’t win the regular season title. Didn’t win the big ten tournament title. Knocked out of the Sweet 16 by a 15 seed.
Here’s a press conference with Sarunas Jasikevicius in the Lietuvos Krepsinio Lyga (at the time). One of his players left at halftime of a semi-final game to be there for the birth of his child. This is what he had to say about it:
I’m not saying they’re gonna win, but pretty impressive the Colts have an MVP candidate (Jonathan Taylor) and DPOY candidate (Darius Leonard). Pretty good Ballard second-rounders.
BREAKING: I made a hole in one at Prairie View No. 4 this morning. Also missed three putts inside three feet but…HOLE IN ONE! Second of my life. But it’s gonna be expensive. Feel free to contribute to my hole in one Go Fund Me.
I am thrilled to report that we raised more than $81,000 for ALS research today, the most ever in the 6-year history of the event. My greatest thanks to everybody who joined us today. In an unrelated note, I putted like a champ today. A day of miracles.
I realize the Big Ten has lost a lot of good players and IU has Trayce, Race and others returning, but 13th in the AP poll? They haven’t finished in the top half of the conference in six years. I think the expectations are way too high.
I assume Colts fans appreciate just how special Andrew Luck was in the fourth quarter today. He’s not just the league’s Comeback Player of the Year, but he’s on the edge of the MVP conversation.
My apologies for not being in Hartford for Purdue’s opening week of NCAA games, but I have a good excuse: My daughter is getting married Saturday. So there’s that.
Guess I owe Frank Reich money. Says he saw my tweet - or somebody told him about it - and he ran a version of the Philly Special on the first TD drive. Calls it the Patriots Special. Hope he takes Venmo.
My final day at WTHR is Friday but the report card was my last column for them. I’m working a lame duck schedule, as you may have noticed. Thanks to all who followed me over there and I hope you will continue to read me at my new place of employment beginning Nov 26.
Really impressed that Matt Painter would take the microphone during Senior Day festivities and implore Purdue fans to stop with the IU sucks chant in the future. He’s right. Purdue is better than that. And IU should be better than the garbage they yelled at Matt Haarms.
I wish someone would quit on me by offering me around 25 mill. So many people struggling to put food on the table, and Victor wants us to believe he's been disrespected and cast off. Just a little tone deaf, on top of being ridiculous.
Dakich is in trouble again, which can only mean one thing: Another contract extension for him at The Fan. They’ve enabled his behavior for years. Bunch of invertebrates.
I've had a few minutes to digest to the press conference and all I can come up with is...wow. That was a bit of a train wreck. Saturday handled it beautifully, but Irsay was out there and Ballard was defensive. Not a good look. At all.
I am shockingly sober for a Saturday night and I can’t help but feel that Purdue will play its best game in two years Monday and beat favored UConn. I know the Huskies are favored and correctly so, but I can foresee one of those immaculate performances with unlikely heros.
Jonathan Taylor is the reason good GM’s listen to the draft board. When the Colts took JT, they already had Marlin Mack coming off an excellent season. Took Taylor anyway. He’s worked out.
I find it interesting that the right says we shouldn’t politicize gun control after a mass shooting, but after the drunk driving deaths this weekend in Indy, the right is politicizing the illegal immigration issue.
NBC Sports’ Tom Curran was told last night that Josh McDaniels will inform Bill Belichick today of his plans to take the Colts job, and will be in Indy later this week for a press conference. So you may exhale now.
I didn't realize just how little energy last year's Pacers played with until I saw this year's Pacers. Night and day. Record may not match last year's, but this is a really fun team to watch.
If, in fact, the Colts are ready to move on from Wentz, I have to think the issues go well beyond his poor play at the end of the year. Given what they invested in him, it seems crazy that two poor weeks would spell his demise.
More and more, I’m growing my appreciation for having watched Peyton and Andrew all those years. I mean, that was a special time in the life of a franchise. Sometimes forget how good we had it. And how good it could have been.
George Hill was given the choice of re-joining the Pacers or being waived so he can join a contending team; he told Kevin Pritchard he wants to come home to his hometown of Indianapolis. I don't expect him to play significant minutes, but he'll be a professional, veteran presence
Talked to a couple of students before the game. Asked one if he knew much of anything about Bob Knight. “He threw the chair, right?” Understand, these students either weren’t born or were in diapers when Knight was fired in 2000.
