Does Extropic make sense?
This 1-minute clip raises confusion and doubt in my mind about the logical coherence of
@BasedBeffJezos
's pitch.
Is it possible in principle for a startup to invent new kinds of computer chips that are more optimized for running AI? Of course; the…
Guillaume and Trevor have invented a new computing paradigm: not classical, not quantum, but thermodynamic.
@Extropic_AI
harnesses entropy — literal heat — to generate randomness, enabling faster & more energy-efficient AI accelerators.
It's mind-bending tech. Let's dive deep.
No official engagement with my questions so far. Best guess is that there are shaky unstated load-bearing claims about the value of rearchitecting AI using Energy-Based Models.
@garybasin
@Andercot
@Extropic_AI
Yeah I’m guessing that’s their claim, that the EBM approach to AI can become optimal if certain hardware exists.
As you point out, it seems like there are major load-bearing assumptions that currently need to be *stated*, not to mention argued.
The omission of these is big 🚩
I also want to point out that anyone who is nodding along in the comments to Extropic’s pitch is clowning themselves.
You don’t want to be the guy who thinks something on the level of a
@balajis
rant is a coherent argument.
One has to apply basic standards before nodding along.
Going by the leader’s purposely vague droppings, the EBM architecture he envisions has an energy function computed by an AI model.
Is he claiming he can implement an entire such multilayer neural net computation using individual electrons? 🤪
Extropic's tech might have useful applications, but the explanatory material provided so far is typical Jezosian slop.
In this 2-minute clip, he says the problem he's solving is that of sampling from a high-dimensional distribution. Then the topic changes.
Finish your thought,…
Proudly using the term “launch” when the only thing he did is put up a short web page (“Lite Paper”) that still leaves everyone guessing what the computation is even supposed to be doing.
Who does this remind you of, Steve Jobs or Elizabeth Holmes?
While on Twitter it seems like Beff is winning the PR war, over on Hacker News most of the commenters are agreeing with me:
Last time this happened was when HN correctly sniffed out Web3 as bullshit technology.
If you read my first tweet in this thread, and read the various replies, it’s clear that 99% of people are unclear about the same two basic questions I posed.
This thread has 41k views and
@BasedBeffJezos
is aware of it. You’d think he’d respond to the basic clarifications.…
