I’m confused. When Ukrainians attacked back after Russia’s invasion, the US celebrated them. When Palestinians do the same against Israeli occupation, they’re condemned. Filter the propaganda through this lens: the US empire will always choose sides based on its own interests.

Illegal construction in Puerto Rico that threatens beautiful, unique and delicate ecosystems. Agencies have known about it since the 70s. Why was it allowed to continue?

For context, hundreds of linemen who used to work for the public utility were transferred to other govt agencies when LUMA took over. The private company didn’t honor their accumulated benefits and some workers didn’t accept starting over. Some have decades of experience.

“Speak like your current colonizers, not the previous ones.” Mind you, this was on a video about how they’re cutting people’s access to public beaches in Puerto Rico to make them only available to multimillionaires (some of whom have recently moved from the U.S.)

Are Puerto Ricans being pushed out? Tax breaks, beautiful views and cheap real estate are attracting people to Puerto Rico. Some locals say they’re being displaced by newcomers looking to make money. My latest video:

On Tuesday, the governor said he expected a “great portion” of Puerto Rico to have electricity again in the next couple of days. But customers with power have only gone up from 27% to 37%. His second expectation was that “the majority” of PR would be reconnected by yesterday.

There’s a rush to buy waterfront land in Puerto Rico. Will we see more deforestation and construction on ecologically sensitive land? Excellent reporting by @sharonminelli for @ElNuevoDia

The company that privatized the power utility in PR wanted to charge Puerto Ricans more partly because the outages of the past weeks prevented them from selling as much electricity as they were expecting. Read that again. Ppl almost had to pay more for getting bad service. 1/4

Puerto Rico allows people who move to the island to avoid paying capital gains tax. The law could be hurting Puerto Ricans with higher real estate prices, according to Nobel Laureate in Economics Joseph E. Stiglitz.

Stiglitz also said the law that gives tax breaks to people who move to Puerto Rico (Act 22) is having negative effects rather than stimulating growth. He said beneficiaries are raising real estate prices & cost of living for Puerto Ricans while not adding much to the economy.

My suspicion is this attitude is the byproduct of an education system uninterested in other parts of the world, sometimes the very ones the empire stands on. Rather than curiosity, it fosters disdain for what’s different.

I will keep making calls so I can give you more information as I confirm it. It has been a real struggle to decide whether to speak publicly about this given that I’m a reporter. But this is too important. And like with my stories, I will stick to the facts and be fair.

Yes, gentrification & inflation are happening in other parts of the world too. Here’s what’s different about Puerto Rico: - a generous tax break that invites newcomers & is not available to the local population. - yrs of budget cuts & cost increases for locals to pay the debt. 1/

I found out about this through a tip. And while I’m writing this from the heart, I have been trying to do my due diligence to get the facts. I called the number on the company’s website this morning to verify this information. They hung up on me when I asked about that land.
