Leader of the City of Manchester
@BurnageLabour
Councillor. Working hard to make Manchester an even better city. ✉️ casework: cllr.Bev.craig

Coming all the way to Manchester to scrap investment to Manchester and kill levelling up. All without telling any one in Manchester. Couldn’t make it up.
I am told the PM has now taken the decision to shelve the Manchester leg of HS2. Confirmation, and detail of the re-allocation of funds to other transport projects in the north, will presumably come very soon.
Last night
@McrLabour
elected me as the new Leader of Manchester. I’m humbled to have the privilege to lead our fantastic city. Commiserations to the other great candidates
@RahmanCllr
@GarryBridges
@Ekua4Hulme
but Mcr Labour is strong & united. Manchester- We won’t let you down
Without consultation and under the banner of blaming workers- Avanti took a unilateral decision to cut off Manchester indefinitely.
Today alongside
@AndyBurnhamGM
&
@SadiqKhan
we wrote to
@grantshapps
for an urgent meeting demanding a reinstatement or to withdraw the franchise.
So what? Manchester is proud of its diversity.
*Also if you’re going to be a massive racist, at least get your facts right. Manchester’s census data shows over 56% of residents identify as white.
Manchester’s new park in the sky! Fantastic to see the transformation of part of the Castlefield Viaduct led by
@nationaltrust
& local partners. Initially a pilot but hopefully will get rolled out to become even bigger and better.
Just a reminder, the Govts own analysis showed an integrated HS2 and NPR would:
- Add £9bn to GMs economy each year
- Add £24bn a year to the Norths economy
- Create 96,000 jobs
- Improve capacity and connectivity
- Close the productivity gap with London
Levelling up is dead.
We aren’t too thick to understand it thanks, you just need to hand it over. Not sure you want to pick this fight Mr Hancock when as of Friday we still didn’t have postcode data. Complete incompetence.
Good to meet with
@Keir_Starmer
today to talk about how we can work together. Great to hear from the
@UKLabour
Leader how committed he is to working with local government- to show what Labour can do in power, and to supporting Manchester in the future.
Manchester will be bidding to host
@Eurovision
@bbceurovision
A world class music city, brilliant venues, experience in hosting major events, and of course one of the UK’s largest Ukrainian populations- we are confident we will make it a
#eurovision
to remember.

Back under 400 cases per 100k for the first time since September with 2209 cases in the last 7 days. Come on Manchester, let’s keep this up. It’s not nice, but it’s working in bringing the figures down. Let’s keep looking out for each other.
It’s
#lesbianvisabilityweek
If you’d told 14 year old me that my sexuality wouldn’t hold me back and I’d be running one of the best cities in the world in my 30s I wouldn’t have believed you.
Great to reflect on progress, but the stats below show, there’s more to do 👇
Manchester has a new leader for the first time in 25 years… Councillor
@bevcraig
has formally taken over.
@SirRichardLeese
stepped down after becoming leader in 1996.
A fantastic result for Manchester Labour- across the city the people of Manchester put our trust in us. We will always work hard to achieve great things for our city. Labour hold 92 of 96 seats- a resounding mandate for our city.
After 13 years of power and instead of fixing Tory policies that are causing homelessness to sky rocket in this country they punish them.
Here in Manchester we are committed to actually helping people into homes and preventing it in the first place.
Mcr figures still high but have dropped from the peak of 582 down to 477 in <week. We did the right thing and mass tested thousands of students (many of whom where positive but asymptomatic) to contain the spread. We shouldn’t be punished for doing the right thing.
A pleasure to welcome
@KensingtonRoyal
today in Manchester to formally open the Glade of Light Memorial. A beautiful and fitting occasion to remember those lost, their families and all those affected. Thank you for your love and support to Manchester.
There is comfort in remembering.
In acknowledging that, while taken horribly soon, they lived. They changed our lives. They were loved, and they are loved.
It is why memorials such as the Glade of Light are so important. Why Catherine and I so wanted to be here today.
I’ve decided I won’t keep sharing the
@MENnewsdesk
article- but let’s make one thing clear; if you are an LGBT teacher, a LGBT student or a lgbt family in one of our schools;
@ManCityCouncil
and
@McrLabour
has got your back. We won’t stand for hate in our city
#EqualityWins
In an era of hyperbole, I cannot state enough the damage that our inadequate rail networks are inflicting on our residents, commuters and businesses in Manchester & beyond.
The Secretary of State for Transport needs to take a firm grip and regain control.
Proud tonight to have been elected Deputy Leader of
@McrLabour
alongside
@RahmanCllr
- honoured to serve our city and determined to do Manchester proud. Coming out of the covid crisis, we have challenges ahead but we are absolutely committed to building a better Manchester.
On 4th Sept we will see fares reduced across Greater Manchester.
🚌 Capped fares to help with the cost of living crisis
🚌 Next stop full control of the bus route across GM network
We couldn’t have done this without a Labour
@MayorofGM
and Labour Councils like Manchester.
Over £15bn has been cut from Local Government since 2010 or 60p in every £1.
A competitive (multi-year) bidding pot of £2bn won’t fix that.
Radical thought re Levelling Up. Maybe we could fund councils properly to get on with what they think is best for their communities?
Calling bullsh*t on this one.
Manchester implemented testing before discharge into care homes on 16th March, before national lock down and many weeks before Govt guidance.
By testing residents, we went against his rules. But we saved lives.
Only two local authorities had plans in place to protect care homes from the pandemic at the time Covid19 became a pandemic, says Hancock. He insists he did not have the powers to intervene
Really pleased to say that we’ve vaccinated all of our care homes for older people in Manchester. The CMO says for every 20 care home residents vaccinated 1 life is saved, so this news cannot come soon enough. A mammoth effort across the city - thank you 👏
🏆 We’ve vaccinated over 70% of our over 80 years olds.
🏆 We’ve vaccinated residents & staff in 100% of our care homes for older people.
Thanks to everyone working on our vaccination programme & we're proud of all the Mancunians who've stepped forward to have their jabs. 💙
Vote for me and some bloke called
@AndyBurnhamGM
you might have heard of him, he’s some kind of northern cult hero 😉. Good luck to
@TeamBurnhamGM
today- lots of support for him across Manchester 🌹
A big day for Greater Manchester. It’s been a long time coming as buses come back under public control.
Thanks to
@AndyBurnhamGM
and the
@BeeNetwork
- it’s been a great team effort across GM to start to build the public transport system we deserve.
#BeeNetwork
Manchester has over £420million cut *a year* since 2010 with more to come in the next 2 years.
I would welcome the Minister to Manchester to try and explain where this ‘fat’ is?
We remember and will never forget - you will always be in our hearts.
5 years on, thinking of everyone touched by that awful night.
Manchester has shown the world that love is always stronger than hate 🐝
#ManchesterRemembers
Excited to be opening Manchester’s first public park in the city centre for 100 years this week.
Manchester has over 140 parks and green spaces, but this is a game changer for the city centre. 🌳 🛝 🌳
Ahead of the first Manchester community vaccine at 8am, I visited our Wythenshawe vaccination site tonight. A fantastic amount of work from many people in a short amount of time. I can’t name them all but real stars from across the city. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
Important statement from Manchester hospitals. It’s a serious situation in GM, the demands a serious response. Hospitals have been planning throughout the summer. Despite the Whitehall briefings, hospitals are still keen to emphasis that its safe to get help if you need it 👇
Proud to be re-elected in Burnage with an increased majority. Thanks to all those that have helped and supported along the way, and to the voters of my area that have resoundingly given my their backing. I won’t let you down 🌹
Another day, another political attack on workers from the Tories.
Manchester has over 7,500 staff. We are proud to recognise trade unions. A happy workforce delivers better services.
Boring distraction tactics from a Government knee deep in controversy and lacking direction.
Honoured to be unanimously re-elected as
@McrLabour
Leader tonight at our AGM (part 1!) - proud to lead a strong team of Executive and Deputy Executive Members elected tonight. Such a breadth of talent across the group certainly means exciting things ahead for Manchester.
Proud to announce today that
@ManCityCouncil
will be paying Manchester Homecare workers the real living wage/ Manchester minimum wage of £8.75/hr - another example of
@McrLabour
delivering for Manchester people despite unfair government funding cuts
We want the hard-working people in this city to receive fair pay for their efforts. As part of this, we're providing funding to ensure home care workers earn the Manchester Living Wage
Today especially we are thinking about the 22 people we lost at the
#ManchesterArena
their friends and families, and the many who were injured- physically or mentally by that night. We will never forget you
#WeStandTogether
#ManchesterRemembers
Great to launch Manchester’s cargo bike scheme today in partnership with
@McrBikesuk
Pleased to say that
@ManCityCouncil
will be using these across the city. This public scheme is a great example of sustainable transport. Clean, green and easy to use!
The Glade of Light is a beautiful tribute symbolising love over hate. We will never forget those who were lost on May 22, 2017. They already had a permanent place in the hearts of Manchester people. Now they have a lasting memorial in the heart of our city
Brilliant to open
@MayfieldMCR
park today. A game changer for this part of the city. Even better that schoolchildren from across Manchester got to come and celebrate with us.
Up bright and early for a slot on Good morning Britain before the PM.
In an old unused Railway station in Manchester, talking about the Conservatives coming to Manchester to hold their conference in a disused station to axe rail investment.
What a way to run a country 🥴
Reactionary nonsense pandering to an imaginary group of people who don’t want their kids to be safer on residential roads 🤷
I wasn’t expecting this in Manchester, but I won’t let HS2 go without a fight.
The offer to the PM is there - work with me and the private sector, grip the costs, and build Britain’s future.
Delighted to be unanimously re-selected by
@BurnageLabour
tonight.
I’ve represented my ward for 12 years, and I’m still just as passionate to improve our area. Now, back to work!
Congratulations to Councillor
@JoMidge
who has been elected tonight as Deputy Leader. Commiserations to
@S_A_Russell
and Sandra, such talent in our Labour group. Looking forward to working with Jo and
@RahmanCllr
when I take up the role next month.
Pleased to announce that
@DCMS
will be moving 400 jobs to Manchester. A city with a global reputation for culture, media, digital and sport makes an ideal fit, so welcome aboard to all at DCMS.
Another vote of confidence in our city with benefits across GM and the north.
Hello Manchester!
Our new hub opens today in the heart of the North West, strengthening our commitment to recruiting talented individuals from across the country and ensuring job opportunities are spread equally across the UK.
#LevellingUp
As we wind down for Christmas, a massive shout out to all of those who have worked tirelessly and those working as we speak to look after our city. In awe of our
@ManCityCouncil
health and care staff ❤️
This isn’t a party political fight between north and south. It’s much more fundamental. Its not about Mancunians merrily nipping for a pint. It’s about not writing off millions of people and their ability to pay the bills and feed their kids amidst a global pandemic.
"Protecting health is about more than controlling the coronavirus"

Manchester is a city that celebrates its diversity as its strength.
Today hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets - Always a powerful moment. Manchester as it’s best.
Happy Pride Manchester 🌈
Enjoy, be safe and be proud 🐝
Manchester has had some of the worst health inequalities for decades. Exercise and being active is core to our city become happier& healthier. I don’t support any moves from govt to close gyms without any scientific evidence and continue to support the
#SaveOurSports
campaign
Great to be at the opening of the new
@LGBTCentreMcr
&
@TheProudTrust
on Sidney street in Manchester. The first of its kind built in 1988 by
@ManCityCouncil
in the midst of Section 28, I’m proud that we have supported their £2.5m rebuild for generations of LGBT+ young people 🌈
Great to join
@SparkleWeekend
today in Sackville Park.
Going strong since 2005, Sparkle has been welcoming trans communities from all over the country.
In Manchester we are clear - trans rights are human rights 🏳️⚧️ we will stand up to hatred and create a city for all to thrive.
Glad to the see Government and the JVCI catching up. We’ve been vaccinating our homeless and rough sleeping population for weeks now. Vaccine availability should be linked to health inequalities, risk/need. Pretty simple stuff.
🗣️ "Passengers and staff have been taken aback by the scale of the proposed changes. To announce them without prior warning and head straight into a 21-day consultation period feels wholly inadequate to an issue of this seriousness."
🚉 Andy's written to the Transport Secretary
After years of hard work, I’m so so pleased that our ‘first of a kind' purpose-built publicly funded LGBT+ housing scheme is becoming reality. Lots of hard work over the years from many partners, but a special thanks to
@LGBTfdn
Today at Council I announced Manchester is formally supporting the
#RighttoFood

After a busy week, nothing better than getting outdoors for a bit of thinking time. Just one of over 140 parks and green spaces in Manchester. Green spaces in the heart of our cities are so important. That’s why we want to invest and improve them, and create more where we can.
In London to make Manchester’s case to the HS2 Bill Committee for an integrated underground Northern Powerhouse Rail & HS2 station.
Concrete stilts rising out of the ground, blighting the city, hampering growth & not planning for the future.
🚆 Build it once, build it right 🚆
Big day for Manchester - and the North - in Parliament today as local leaders make the case for underground trains at Piccadilly. This is the MEN's view
#LDReporter
The Tories forcing a council tax rise is dangerous and regressive.
Since 2010 Manchester Council has had £428million *a year* cut.
Council tax = < 1/3 of council funding. Councils don’t benefit equally from raises:
1% in Mcr = £2m
1% in Kent = £7m
Unsustainable and unfair.
Council tax in England could increase more than expected as part of the Government's plans to be revealed in Thursday's Autumn Statement.
Chief Political Correspondent Nick Eardley had the latest on

Today we’ve lost one of our best. Words can’t do justice to the person Sue was and what she meant to us; bright, passionate, caring and funny. A colleague, friend and mentor to many. Thinking of Paul, and her friends and family. We will miss you 💔
With the Conservative Party in Manchester- on their own measures the Government is failing and our residents suffering .
We’ve seen cuts of £428million/ year taken from our budget, schools are crumbling & the NHS on its knees.
In Manchester, we don’t stand silently by 👇🏼
Deeply saddened by the passing of Tony Lloyd, a truly wonderful man and politician. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
For decades he gave so much to our city as MP, Police & Crime Commissioner and GM Mayor
He will be missed by so many in the Manchester Labour family
From the Christmas Markets across the city, to the Bridgewater, the Royal Exchange, to every bar and restaurant I walk past tonight- the city centre is booming and busy. So good to see.
Manchester has it all. 🍻 🍽️ 🎭 🎶
Politics can be brutal sometimes. Manchester Labour holds 86/96 seats but I’m saddened that my friend and colleague
@RahmanCllr
didn’t get back in.
Luthfur has achieved so much for our city and for Longsight, a fierce advocate for culture and young people. He will be missed but
Thank you to the residents across the city that once again put their faith in
@McrLabour
With 88 Labour Councillors - I’m proud to lead one of the largest (and certainly best) labour groups in the country 🌹
We’ll keep working hard for a better city for all 🤝
A challenging 24 hours, with Manchester in the news for the wrong reasons. Our COVID infection rates stand at 195 per 100k (with an increase in numbers of people seeking medical help). We need everyone to pull together by staying apart, to limit the spread. Stay safe Mcr 🐝 ❤️
Just finished watching

I couldn’t be prouder of
@ManCityCouncil
staff. Our Hub has taken 12,000 calls and our food response fed over 10,000 people with the commitment to continue as long as needed. Don’t let them tell you principled local govt can’t make a difference.
After a long battle, Greater Manchester can get on with bringing the buses back into public control.
An integrated, well run and properly resourced transport system that puts people and places before profit is at the heart of what we want to do.
👏🚌🚌🚌🚌👏
COVID update: Today sees Manchester’s numbers drop to 189.9 per 100k (7 day period to 27/11), which is a drop of 28.9% on the previous week. This is the first time since 23rd September that Mcr’s rate has been under 200.
Keep it up Manchester 🙌
Just one example of the disrespect our city is being shown by this Government: where our leadership learns live on telly what the government are planning to do to our city. Governing by leaks, lies and dishonesty is no way to run a country. 😡
Great to launch Manchester’s work to become a Real Living Wage City with key partners today. With 130 Manchester employers already

accredited- a strong foundation to build a city with good jobs for all residents. Looking forward to publishing our action plan.

We need more MPs who live in council housing, not less. Growing up (in our Council home) I would never have dreamed that someone from our estate could be in Parliament. Rather than demonising
@KateOsamor
- maybe we could turn our attention to this country’s failed housing policy?
Nye Bevan’s dream of council housing was of mixed communities, where “the doctor, the grocer, the butcher and the farm labourer all lived in the same street." The alternative is to create ghettos for the poor. The government alone are to blame for the shortage of council housing.
Honoured to be unanimously re-selected by
@BurnageLabour
to fight the 2020 Local Elections for the community I love. Thanks to our local members for their continued trust in me.
We’re building the homes Manchester needs.
In 2022 we set our ambitious plan to build new homes and tackle bad landlords.
We are building at least 10,000 council, social and genuinely affordable low carbon homes right across the city.
Proud to say we’re already delivering 🏡

These numbers nationally really are high. Manchester comes in at 256th of 315 local authorities at 237.9 cases per 100k. We were put in to extra measures in the summer for cases of 20 per 100k. 20. Think about that for an minute. There are now 19 areas with cases over 1000/100k.
