"The wise man does not break into his fellow's speech. He is not in a rush to reply. He asks what is relevant and replies to the point. Of what he has not heard he says, 'I have not heard,' and he acknowledges what is true."

On the left, an armed man entering a government building to exercise his right to peaceful protest.
On the right, an armed man entering a government building to murder people.
In all sincerity, how is any ordinary person supposed to know the difference & respond appropriately?
Governor Anne Richards of Texas had a point-blank answer for people who proposed imposing their religious views about abortion on everybody else.
She was loved for her blunt, no-nonsense manner and her common sense thinking.
I wonder if
@BetoORourke
would consider becoming chair of the Texas Democratic Party?
No other Democrat knows every county better, energizes voters more, and has a better understanding of what does and doesn't work here.
Interesting way to choose to frame this. Wouldn't it also be true to say that five out of six men ages 16-29 say feminism has done more good than harm?
One of the UCLA attackers identified as "pro-Israel counterprotesters" also "took part in several demonstrations over the past year where he was photographed making Nazi salutes. Hisย social media historyย is rife with antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ+ posts."
This guy gets to stand in his taxpayer-funded pulpit and endorse Republican political candidates, but I'm not supposed to stand in my public college classroom and teach that the Civil War was about slavery.
Just going to put a pin in this idea: The overwhelming state police response at UT-Austin today is happening so Greg Abbott can claim events there are so out of control it necessitates a government takeover of the university.
Me, a Texas resident: My neighbor's dog is barking all night. What can I do?
City website: We recommend discussing it with your neighbor.
Me, still in Texas: Hell no I'm not doing that.
We should let states decide things and just live with the outcome, says a guy who ordered a state to stop counting its ballots so he could have the president he wanted.
I'm sure
@GovAbbott
has a plan for safely evacuating patients out of every maxed-out ICU on the Texas coast. Closest available beds are in New Mexico, but he must have a plan.

Texas has 1 million kids in private or home school. If they each got a $8,000 voucher, it would cost taxpayers $8 Billion. A major transfer of public money to mostly religious institutions. More:

If a Court composed mostly of justices appointed by presidents you voted for, whose appointments you fought for, whose seats you stole to make room for, keeps ruling that your views are unconstitutional, it's because your views are unconstitutional.
Pence: I think we can replace the new deal programs with a better dealโฆ give options to younger Americans to invest a portion of their social security in a private savings account
They want public schools to fail. They want public school teachers to suffer. They want students and their families to feel desperate enough to demand an option to attend private schools instead.
This isn't a failure of leadership, it's deliberate sabotage of public education.
Trump is demanding schools reopen & threatening to withhold funding over it; but what if there's an outbreak?
"Schools should have plans," says Edu Sec. Betsy DeVos, repeating declining to say how they should respond to an outbreak.
She also cited "private sector examples."
Beto's speech in Uvalde was highly inappropriate. If you have a concern about how the government is doing things, the proper course of action is to storm and ransack the Capitol.
Private and parochial schools in Texas are exempt from
@GovAbbott

Abbott's ban is a strategic attack on public education.

No matter. Republicans got their way, and they'll forget their anger about this the moment Fox invents some shiny new grievance.
Democrats -- women especially -- will feel renewed motivation to organize and vote every day Kavanaugh sits on the Court.
Dear *Mr. Biden*:
I guess you can be president now.
Just so you know, I did everything right and nothing wrong. Here's some stuff about me.
More me.
Trump had nothing to do with it. I barely know who he is.
If my office can help in any way, here's a subordinate you can call.
Sure, Texans are blowing up about this because it's "Lonesome Dove" and its scriptural.
But the important point is the second one: people who don't read are making decisions about which books to prohibit other people from reading.
"They might need to ban Lonesome Dove" -
@JaredLPatterson
says, admitting he's never read it. One educator says that it might help to have a legislator who's better read be the one to carry the bill on what people can read in libraries
#TxLege
There is literally no reason to do this except to make it harder for college students to vote.
I can find no explanation by the bill's author,
@CarrieIsaac
, of why she thinks it's needed or what problem it's supposed to solve.
New: a bill has been filed in Texas to prohibit counties from putting a polling place at a college or university.
It follows another bill filed earlier that would require counties to put a certain # of polling places on college campuses depending on enrollment size.
Finished the first half of the U.S. history survey today with a lecture on Reconstruction and the Lost Cause. Students went home angry. I'd say that's a job well done.

The guy who did nothing when children in his town were slaughtered, defended the police who let it happen, stood behind Abbott while he lied about it, and called Beto O'Rourke an "asshole" and a "sick son of a bitch" for pointing it outโthat guy wants to be in the legislature.

It wasn't a question because Judge Jackson wasn't permitted to reply. It was an inflammatory and racist allegation made to someone prohibited from defending herself.
I'm not going to forward the video โ you can find it if you want โ but I watched it and admit I'm shaken by it. It's one of the most aggressive, confident, and upsetting displays of antisemitism I've seen online. This one literally kept me up at night.
If he could throw all the blame onto Uvalde PD, you know he would. He's covering up the facts because they implicate him personally and/or state police under his authority.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has joined the growing list of state and local officials fighting the release of records that could help clarify how the emergency response unfolded during last monthโs deadly shooting in Uvalde.
UPDATE: Paxton perform 100 hours of community service in Collin County, take 15 hours of legal ethics education and pay a restitution of about $300,000. At the end of 18 months, the charges will be dismissed.
I think if I was ever invited to visit the Oval Office I'd be so overwhelmed with the historical weight of the place that I'd be totally incapable of talking about whatever I was invited there for. I'd just want to walk in ovals around the room gawking at everything.
Did you realize that in Texas some of our state parks are not actually owned by the public but are leased at taxpayer expense from energy corporations? Neither did I.
With heavy hearts we announce that Fairfield Lake State Park will close to the public on Feb. 28.
We received notification from Vistra that it will terminate the land lease for the park.

I'm free now to report that I was a historical consultant on this case.
I havenโt posted about this before because I was waiting for the process to play out. But now that the judge has ruled, I'd like to describe my experience.
The Texas higher ed anti-CRT bill under consideration now doesn't threaten action against individual faculty who violate it, it revokes state funding from *entire institutions* that violate it.
This will encourage admins to remove faculty, possibly entire programs, preemptively.
Are there people on "both sides" who would restrict others' speech? Sure. But the people doing it on the left are people; the people doing it on the right are legislatures. They aren't equivalent.
Yes. This. Speech codes. Shout-downs. All of it is found on the illiberal right and the illiberal left. Itโs one reason why I think the more meaningful American culture war isnโt so much right v. left as liberal v. Illiberal.
Despite the tension of the past week, Sunday's pro-Palestinian protest on the UT Austin campus concluded peacefully.
Speakers warned demonstrators not to engage with police or others seeking to antagonize them.

Blue counties on the left are where everything's fine. Why aren't the El Paso area, Panhandle, & far East Texas affected by outages? Because, as the second map shows, they're not part of Texas's secessionist power grid. They're letting the rest of the country save their lives.

What I like about this is how he starts with a strong statement on abortion, obviously the thing on everyone's minds, then connects it logically and emotionally to a series of other crucial failures of Abbott's leadership.

There was a shooting at a Texas high school today that injured four people, and the legislature spent the day discussing how trans athletes are dangerous.

@ERCOT_ISO
, what concessions are you asking from Texas industrial, commercial, and transportation consumers, who use many times more power than residential customers?
Residences use only 12.7% of the state's energy. Why are we the only ones being asked to sacrifice?
ERCOT, the stateโs power grid operator, has asked Texans to turn up their thermostats and postpone running major appliances between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. ERCOT has also called on large electric customers to lower their electricity use.
It can't be said often enough: Every member of every Texas public university board of regents is a Greg Abbott appointee. They're political operatives, not educators, and they work for the Texas GOP, not for the universities they govern.
The initial reporting on this was that it was outside alumni. But here are two A&M Regents working to tank this appointment, boasting about trying to โcontrol the liberal nature that those professors brought to campusโ
