ok honest question: what's point of the sacred privacy of supreme court deliberations? gorsuch and kavanaugh plainly lied to get the job. thomas rules on issues that implicate his wife. they're politicians (and corrupt ones at that). why are obligated to treat them otherwise?

So after I vote, and Democrats keep the presidency, and expand their House majority, and have 55 seats in the Senate ... what's the plan then? How does this get better? In this absurd, best case scenario, what exactly are Democrats going to do that they couldn't do now?

So, a few clips of @SNYtv Mets’ broadcasts have been making the rounds. Baseball on TV can be a pretty stale affair, but these shots are different—they're dramatic, arresting, somehow more than a baseball game. They've also been 20 years in the making.

is SQL more popular than python/r among today's data folks because it's better, or because people can use it without needing to set up dev environments, move data from one place to another, or do any of the other hard "time to google another cryptic terminal error" stuff?

This is a smart question, and highlights - ironically - a really misleading statistic. Data cleaning is often framed as this discrete step that happens before analysis. It's not; it's part of the analysis. So while 80% is probably right, it's a kind of double counting:

I agree a lot of data science is cleaning but sometimes I hear people quoting huge numbers (like 80% of work is cleaning) and I wonder what’s the reality like on average? For those high numbers is that really something that should be solved upstream with the data collection?

The weird thing is, we recognize why this would never work in other disciplines. There's no self-serve design because it's obvious design is more than knowing how to use Figma. So why do we pretend that a GUI for SQL is all that's needed for analysis?

this is very much similar to my feeling: sql's nouns make more sense to me. They're tables, columns, Excel-like formulas. it's a much more intuitive way to think about analysis than whatever nouns (objects, functions, "classes") would be core in Python.

@bennstancil SQL is written for you to think in *shapes* while python is written for you to think in *steps*. SQL lets you focus on defining a shape, and the warehouse figures out how to compute it. That's a better flow & focus for data transformation work.
