I had day surgery today (nothing big) and they were like "don't make any important decisions in the next 24 hours bc you might not remember them." But I had to go grocery shopping. Later Morgan was like "you bought ... so much, like a lot, of cheese."
My book was on Obama’s favourite list but what is really electrifying the room here at mom and dad’s is that King Cole tea is on sale $5.99 a box, and everyone is flying through the store with shopping carts full of them
The Bear made the most stressful half hour of television of 2022, all the true crime series about serial killers in the world have nothing on when those pre-order slips came running out of the machine
The idea that Scholastic could create a program designed to opt out, censor and ban diverse books from its book fairs and then call it "Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice" is the phoniest, weakest position anyone could think up
I always look forward to sharing my lists of favorite books, movies, and music with all of you.
First up, here are some of the books I read and enjoyed this year. Let me know which books I should check out in 2023.
Ducks has done so well, people felt like I disappeared from comics and it felt that way to me even though I always had work on my plate - for for my book to finally come out to this reception is everything that a person could ask for, thank you for your support and readership.
In 2014 I was in my studio in Toronto one weekend and there was a kid’s birthday party next door and they played Let It Go on repeat and I thought, annoyed, “that’s a lot of times to listen to this song” but now I have a 3 year old and truly: here I stand in the light of day
It's an honour to win two Eisners for Ducks. I hope the success of my book encourages more comics, more diverse perpectives, made and published from underrrepresented worlds of labour, or class, or those communities affected most by corporate and government power.
Jesus Christ. There has been a tailings pond leak from the Kearl Lake project into the water near Fort Chipewyan First Nation for NINE MONTHS and the people weren't even informed. These corporations are criminals, murderers, they knowingly dump carcinogens
Being raised Catholic I know a thing or two about Divine Agonies but in spite of the weeping and wailing in the next room I don’t think there was a Station of the Cross where Jesus was made to share the iPad with his brother
My uncle: “what’s all this about ducks, what is everyone talking about ducks for”
Dad: “that’s the name of Kate’s book”
My uncle: “ohh. I’ll have to get that then.”
Moments later:
My uncle: “yes I’ll have to get my hands on ‘Turkeys’”
I talk about this in on tour, and often in my interviews, but find that it is also often cut down or cut out when published, so. Oil sands corporations and the Alberta government are knowingly killing Indigenous people with industrial carcinogens. They will kill workers too.
No one can fire me from my job. Fuck the oil companies for giving people cancer. Fuck Syncrude, Suncor, Shell, and all of them, they are murderers. Fuck the government for letting it happen. Fuck the rest of us for saying nothing.
Our house has produced two Canada Reads longlisters in as many years, but do you think our children care! No! They only want to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and eat goldfish crackers
I want a weighted blanket when I see them, but what I really want, as a core feeling, is to be warm under the weight of 4-6 mismatched blankets/ quilts getting mentally prepped to tear them off and get a blast of cold air because the house is freezing and you know you have to run
3 years old is the age where you can take your child to the change stalls at the pool with you and they will make the explosive commentary on your naked body you were too shy to announce to the room yourself
I like to buy big sunglasses, and I remember that in Archie comics there was always an establishing shot where there was some random babe in the foreground and all you could see was her giant head wearing giant honkin sunglasses, looking off in the distance, randomly posing
Everybody who has multiple older relatives on their Netflix because they would never figure out how to set it up or pay for it or don’t even have a credit card and you did something nice for them. It’s a bad time
We are headed back to Canada, we have had enough of money that’s all the same colour it’s too confusing and the dollar bills make it look like you have lots of it when you don’t
I wrote a bitter tweet last week about grown men in comics pursuing teenagers. I’ve removed it, I said it was the same story every time, but I was wrong and I am sorry for it, this time the story is very different and has a horrific end. I hope there is never another like it.
Thank you Toronto! Thank you everyone who came to the book tour stops so far. We are going home today. I got this duck sweater in a vintage store it was very thematic I was thrilled. See you on the west coast in November
I just listened to another CBC interview I did that was just posted, where again they cut out everything I said about Fort Chip, cancer and oil companies and government poisoning communities but kept everything else. I am so frustrated with this. Why can’t I talk about this
1/2 - I had a really great talk with BBC Outlook- In person it was a long conversation and it’s edited for time etc but again I hear the part where I talk about cancer in Indigenous communities around the oil sands cut out. So I will say again.
Canada Reads had excellent books on their long list and shortlist, it was my privilege just to be there, and my great fortune to have
@mattearoach
as my champion, debating passionately, earnestly and sharply. Thank you, I just want to say thank you.

And if you touch the oil thermostat your father will appear out of nowhere and look at you like this bird so you never do that but for now you’re just very warm under this heavy pile of quilts and it feels good
I got Covid coming back from Germany and it has lasted like two weeks and I am only now clawing myself out of my tomb. Is it because we insisted on seeing this fabulous jeweled skeleton?? (
@daycrossing
also got Covid). I can't stay mad at u fabulous skeleton even if u cursed us
We used to get only two tv channels, and on Saturday evenings one played Deep Space Nine and Voyager back to back while the other played hockey so I used to watch this but the rules are fuzzy - it’s: very interesting.
My book often gets called a look into a hidden world, but it's not hidden, it's an enormous industry of thousands of people, with far reaching consequences. But I understand the description. It can feel hidden if no narratives break through. I look forward to more.
Crayons are such a symbol of childhood, hours spent colouring with crayons. Except irl the second children get a whiff of anything else to colour with like markers they are like fuck crayons forever don't darken my doorway
"Fort Chip needs a comprehensive health study. Contrary to what the government has been telling us for years, this industry has a huge adverse impact on the environment. Money talks, and the Peoples downstream of this industry represent a sacrificial zone"
If someone is answering a tweet with bigotry I’m not going to debate or QT to dunk on it or invite any kind of engagement I’m just going to block that account, no thanks
I do not want to sanitize a version of my opinion for air that handles corporations or government with kid gloves when they are killing people for money
2/2- Oil sands corporations and the Alberta government are knowingly killing Indigenous people with industrial carcinogens. Nothing is being done because of the money and the jobs. It is more profitable to look the other way or deny. Anecdotally you hear of workers and cancer too
I spoke about this on different CBC interviews because I talked to CBC a lot for this book and it seemed to me that almost every time it was edited out for time, or maybe because I was too angry when I spoke, or I don't know. People are dying, it's not nice.
If you do not start thinking about these oil corporations as murderers, then you do not understand them. It is just something they are allowed to do along with everything else if people are in the way or if they are inconvenient or no one cares and it's less expensive.
Pls sign up for my Parenting Seminar on arguing with three year olds, it's called: "Wait, now we are both crying, why did I start arguing with a three year old"
I don't play many video games but recently played Pentiment and The Case of the Golden Idol, and loved them! Before then the last one I played was Meredith Gran's emotionally impeccable adventure game Perfect Tides, which I can't recommend enough, so on point like all of her work
Donno why people can’t just talk about things anymore, they always have to be “opening up” about them in news stories which makes them sound breathless and on a fainting couch
It has been known for decades that there are elevated cancer rates and other health issues in the Indigenous communities living downstream of oilsand industries, it is in the government's interest to hedge and deny it until the profits are gone
