Yesterday, a man was denied his CT Pistol Permit on “suitability” grounds because he reported that his car was broken into and handgun stolen out of his glove box. He was also arrested for violating CT’s “safe storage” law.
This is why even seemingly innocent gun laws are bad.
@avsterbone
We have it in California, I havent heard of anyone being prosecuted for a storage law after reporting a gun stolen (though I haven't checked).
But that's a fair concern. The law should grant you immunity on storage claims if you report a stolen gun.
It is also telling that government doesn’t consider a locked vehicle as “safe storage.” They’re essentially conceding that they can’t deal with car break-ins. Like what’s the point in having locks on vehicles if they mean nothing for the purpose of criminal liability?

Anytime I see the word “permit”, in any context, I think about what the phrase would sound like if it were replaced with “Permission”. 🤫
Asking for permission from the state government to exercise a right.

I've heard of it in L.A. County, but no arrest at the time.
According to my source, the loaded gun was in a fake clock by the bed that wasn't a CA approved FSD. A neighbor's "minor son" stole it. Gun owner pleaded out to $1K fine, no jail & loss of 2A rights. IMHO he was lucky.
@avsterbone
We fought a local safe storage law in NY and defeated it, because I pointed out that the police depts storage systems in thier cruisers wouldn't meet the threashold established and that they werent exempt
@avsterbone
My Ct. permit expired at the end of the year, even though I sent in the renewal promptly. Their web site suggests they are about 10 weeks behind right now.

The Narcissist's Prayer
That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
And if it was, that's not a big deal.
And if it is, that's not my fault.
And if it was, I didn't mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.
@avsterbone
They only do something when violence occurs. Meanwhile, every day ppl report strangers checking their cars, breaking into cars, stealing packages, etc and nothing is done

Never report a stolen gun, it’s self-incrimination under such laws and therefor the 5th Amendment applies. That’s what the upshot of cases like this prove. Keep your pie-hole shut, even if they show up after a gun trace on a crime gun. Don’t lie, but don’t say anything.

The defendant in this case should challenge the law based on Heller and the fact that it requires self-incrimination to report a theft. Toss all the evidence on 4th and 5th Amendment grounds. Tell the DA “prove there was a gun.”
