“Art is to console those who are broken by life.” This vibrant painting dates to the last year of Vincent van Gogh's life. The work is a copy of an engraving by Daumier. Somewhat softening his own depiction, there is real pathos in Van Gogh's version:

Hubert Robert's paintings of imaginary ruins are fantasies of expansive space— filled with arches, Roman statuary, majestic stairwells, and decaying colonnades. The tiny figures serve only to set the scale, for the ruins themselves are the true subject of the pictures. #NowOnView
