Can amides deprotonate benzene? Can they deprotonate any other arene? Check out how a sodium amide can do this and allow the catalytic deuteration of aromatic molecules! This is my poster for this year's

I am presenting today a catalytic deuteration of arenes with sodium amides, my latest work at the University of Bern. We found a system able to deprotonate benzene, which allows the transfer of deuterium to different arenes

Just finished
@eucomc2023
in AlcalΓ‘ de Henares! Had a great time presenting our research in Na chemistry π§ͺ, thank you for the poster prize and everyone who made it possible π looking forward for the next edition in Bern in 2025
For me this is the coolest structure I got so far! π A big shout out here to
@Lorraine_AM
for being an essential part of every of our X-Ray measurements!! We could not get all this work done without her.
Happy to be back in the
@BienalGranada22

Check it out!
@professor_dave
and Peter O'Brien (
@ChemistryatYork

Thanks for answering! I was thinking that you could get the silylation in the terminal position if the nickel could isomerize via betahydride elimination and reinsertion. I was wondering if this nickel-amide ligand would allow this isomerization.

yes, working with sodium offers a boost in reactivity but we suffer in the FG tolerance. In general, any functional group that would react with nBuLi, we see that is not tolerated. We are working on milder bases to try to modulate the reactivity and have better tolerance.

thanks! This happens at room temperature, but the formed PhNa co-complex with unreacted base, so we don't get a full metalation (which is key for the deuteration). We have also used B(OiPr)3 to push the metalation and form the 'borylated' products

Thank you!! We see that the acidity is similar, so both species are present in solution and this allows the H/D exchange to take place. The catalytic cycle is also simplified, because organosodium might aggregate in solution.
