When you work at a big co, 80% of your time is spent managing perceptions, aligning stakeholders, making slides/docs about your plans.
When you work at a startup, 99% of your time is spent building and on action that directly drives outcomes 💪
7 years ago, I drove to SF with big startup dreams
After a crazy 7 years, I’m packing my car again and driving to Austin to build a company
I love you SF for your daring ambition, wild ideas, and generosity
Excited to spread the opportunities for wealth creation! 🛣
Don’t let anyone gatekeep you from starting a company.
“You need a technical cofounder” “You need to personally experience the problem”
“You need startup experience”
No, you don’t. Don’t let others dictate whether you’re qualified to pursue your dreams. 🚀
It’s common advice to join a high growth startup if you want to start your own company one day.
As an UberEX founder, I’m realizing that the experience of scaling Uber was a better than any accelerator or incubator out there. Here’s why: (1/8)
If you build a truly amazing product that people absolutely love, things like market size, CAC, and retention will sort themselves out. Instead of continuing to optimize CAC or retention, try optimizing product.
At every point in my career, I've been told that I'm "too nice" and I should "be more aggressive"
I never took the advice and I don't think it has held me back
What does it mean to be "less nice"? Should I raise my voice? Be more stubborn? Be mean? Instructions unclear.
It’s crazy that companies will offer benefits like gym memberships, massages, happy hour etc before they offer the one benefit that will make a huge difference for people:
CHILDCARE
I was reading “Only the Paranoid Survive” by Andy Grove on a flight and the woman sitting next to me was Andy Grove’s wife!! What are the odds of this happening??? She was wonderful and the book is fantastic. Highly recommend. 🤯🤩
I HAVE SOME NEWS!
I'm starting a company.
Let’s use this as an opportunity to not go back to the way things were before, let’s not accept things as the way they have always been. I’ll be right there with you, trying to create a new and better normal.
“Every new person you hire either adds to your culture or detracts from it. There are no neutral people.”
- Overheard at a Sequoia portfolio company all hands.
When I was in VC, I would say things like “thats a tough market” or “that product looks too easy to build”
In reality, I had no idea how hard it is to build something that customers love and pay for regularly
Pity the haters for they have no imagination
Superhuman is a great🦸🏻♀️
Race is an awkward topic in Silicon Valley. We desperately want to believe that we are a meritocracy, that the best ideas win. But when pause to look at founders and funders, blacks and latinx are glaringly absent.
How can we work together to correct this systemic failure?
I’m convinced that the experience of being a *successful* door-to-door salesman is a greater indicator for future success than any “prestigious” I college or internship. If you can convince everyone in your neighborhood and network to buy a $700 knife block you can do anything
As an investor, I wish I could intern at our portfolio companies for a couple months every year. It would be a great way to keep operational skills relevant and to experience new problems and technologies first hand.
Stories about VCs showing up at startup offices unsolicited and refusing to leave until a term sheet is signed are usually shared positively as a demonstration of “hustle”...
Am I the only one that thinks this behavior is kind of creepy and intimidating?
I’m obsessed with understanding and building company culture.
It’s clear to me that startups/tech have a very different culture than finance and other industries and I’ve been intrigued by why that is. Some thoughts: (1/)
Founders, when choosing who to let onto your cap table, don’t forget about values.
You’re putting your sweat, blood and tears into an endeavor for years and maybe decades. If it works, what kind of people do you want to make rich as a result of your team’s labor and sacrifices?
If you’re looking to join a startup, you maximize upside when you join at a LOWER valuation, esp. when the business is hitting an inflection point.
Too many candidates gravitate to valuation as the most important metric. The higher the valuation, the lower your upside potential
I guess the cat’s out of the bag 😺.
DM me or email me if you’re interested in working together! I’m currently looking for an iOS engineer, a full stack engineer and a web developer to join the team :)
Every team I’ve ever worked on always starts out trying all of the cool new project management tools, but inevitably...reverts back to Google Sheets 🤷🏻♀️
So this happened...
I said yes! 💍
@MacLaneWilkison
thanks for being there for me through all the highs and lows. You give me strength and comfort through the lows and make be feel like the highs are just the beginning. Looking forward to a lifetime of adventures ❤️
I loved the
#JokerMovie
so much that I painted this.
Disturbingly relatable, achingly beautiful, the movie shines an uncomfortable light on inequality, mental health, and the way we treat one another.
Thankful to painting for my mental health.

The biggest waste of my time, energy, and emotional capacity was trying to “fit in” with people I perceived as cooler than me in my youth. I can’t event describe how counterproductive this was.
F that. Here’s to embracing our differences and doing what we want.
My Uber driver today was an investor. He had a 4.99 rating and we traded notes on healthcare. He was very insightful. Only in San Francisco...⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I didn’t fully internalize how often people in this industry say “let me know how I can be helpful” until I crossed over to the founder side...seriously a deluge 😳
Suggestion: maybe offer a few ways you can help instead of leaving it open ended?
Spent the last 4 months and counting living out of a duffel with 5 outfits, no permanent residence, and spending about $15/day on food.
But this lifestyle has brought me more joy than designer clothes and Michelin restaurants ever have. Grateful 🙏
Welcomed a new human into the world with
@MacLaneWilkison
. Could not be more filled with joy 👨👩👦
Startups and family are not mutually exclusive. Any mom founders have any tips? 🙏
So Austin is completely out of water and most stores have run out, but Whole Foods still has
@LiquidDeath
... 💀 probably because people didn’t realize it is water 😵
I’m gonna feel so badass brushing my teeth with this tonight!
VC Empathy Tip: Run a fundraising process for a founder
I don’t mean actually pitch—help create a target list, manage feedback, diligence, pass reasons
I wish I did this earlier. It really helped me internalize the impact of my actions and how shitty if feels to be ghosted
Who are some awesome Seed/Series A investors I should be following and getting to know? Trying meet more cool people in venture and hear others’ perspectives! 🌱—> 🌲
Some people make you feel like you can do anything, every time you talk to them, regardless of whether they are delivering praise, criticism, brainstorming or just hanging out.
Cherish those people and keep them in your life at all costs.
Black founders— if you want to pitch Sequoia, are frustrated navigating fundraising, want to shine light on problematic practices in venture, or curious about how we evaluate startups, email me directly: amy

Also, we are hiring. Resumes welcome.
@andrewchen
I’m not surprised at all given how much money we tried to spend on Craigslist posts at Uber and how well the channel converted 😂
In the early days Craigslist was the
#1
channel for UberX driver growth. UberX couldn’t have scaled as quickly without it.
The job of a founder at a growing company evolves at a rapid pace:
From tinkerer—>Recruiter—>PM—>Sales rep—>Manager—>Organizational leader—>Face of a global brand
Failing to embrace change can lead to disaster. What worked for a 50 person co, won’t work for a 500 person one.
When I told my parents I was going to work
@sequoia
, they didn’t know the company. When I told them that Sequoia’s Chinese name is 红杉, they freaked out and told me they were so proud because it’s the best venture firm in China. It’s really inspiring.
Traveling around Asia, struck—again—by how effectively
@sequoia
has expanded its global presence. Leading positions in China, Singapore, India, with top-tier local teams.
Particularly notable given trends in venture financing:
A lot of smart tech/investor folks I know still think that investing in Bitcoin is akin to investing in Pokémon cards or fancy watches.
In honor of BTC hitting all time highs, I’m going to try to break down why
#Bitcoin
matters without using any crypto jargon. Here goes... (1/)
So my fiancé has been overhearing a lot of my Zoom calls and has started incorporating “VC speak” into our everyday conversation...
“Are you losing or gaining elevation on tacos for dinner?”
I’m dead 😵
Each job, employer, initiative, relationship, success, failure contributes to the body of work that is your career, not the other way around. Your current employer is just one facet. (6-End)
Someone asked why I tweeted less since starting a company…
I realized I was in no position to give advice as a VC without truly experiencing the challenges of creating something of value from nothing first hand
This is freakin hard, but also unique and amazing 💪 🚀
Anyone else super paranoid about upgrading phones due to 2 factor authentication apps?
Can’t wait for the day where we have both security and ease of use.
Realizing now that the short time in your 20s/30s where you’re responsible for no one’s life but your own is a brief gift to be cherished.
Chase your dreams, grind, make art, build things, dance all night, travel the world, do nothing, sleep.
Caught up with someone I used to work for yesterday.
The first thing he asked me was how I was doing and if I was happy.
It’s been so long since I was asked that and I think I really needed it. Understanding the psychology behind performance is a hallmark of great leadership
Entered my 30s today 😱
My 20s were dazzling and dizzying. Full of exploration, mistakes, change, learning, optimism. Chasing expectations and caring too much about what others think.
Entering this next decade deliberate, focused, and principled. Let’s do this.
@stephenolmon
@andrewchen
My first job on the growth team at Uber was figuring out how to acquire drivers at scale, which actually just meant locking myself into a room and posting on Craigslist.
I actually wrote about it here if you’re interested (first bullet):
(8) I’m calling it now: the index of companies started by Uber Alums will outperform any accelerator or fund of the same vintage. I’m SUPERPUMPED to see the amazing companies built by this community, and forever grateful to
@travisk
and the Uber team 🙏
Go join a startup! 🚀
In the US, there is sometimes a perception in the VC community that you can’t build large businesses that sell to customers who don’t have money
Incredibly inspired after spending a week with the
@sequoia
team in India and SEA to see technology helping lift people out of poverty
Postponed my wedding due to

Grateful to spend more time with my fiancé as we WFH. Thinking of all the event, travel and hospitality workers whose incomes are severely effected by the pandemic. 🙏
Any suggestions for fun virtual celebrations? 🎊
Wow someone stopped me at a taco shop today and told me they recognized me from Twitter 🤯
This has literally never happened before. Hello IRL friends! 👋
After spending the last 10 months living out of one duffel, and recently being reunited with all my stuff, I can definitely say that less stuff equates to greater happiness than more stuff (after basic needs are met).
This is my husband
@MacLaneWilkison
. Fun fact, when we started dating, I would get mad at him for being on Twitter during our dates. So I decided I would try to get Twitter famous so he would pay more attention to me.
Every startup founded this year and next will be fully remote by default.
The next vintage of important tech companies/employers will look drastically different. Excited to see how will this paradigm shift will reshape the technology ecosystem.
There’s something magical about moving to a new city at the same time as many others in a similar walk of life. College, a first job, a global pandemic...
Preexisting networks are broken, everyone wants to connect, build and be inspired 💫
Thanks for the warm welcome to Austin!
I’ve gotten the feedback that I don’t pause enough between thoughts/statements when I communicate and that I tend to run on
I realized that this is because I get cut off SO MUCH that I conditioned myself to say as much as possible before I’m interrupted
That’s messed up🙄😠😫
My solution was to take the time to define my personal mission, values and purpose independent of my employer. If my own mission aligned with my employer’s then we are off to the races! If they don’t align, then it’s not too devastating to part ways. (5)
Huge shoutout to Austin’s hospitality workers who are the backbone of this city.
They got to work in these treacherous conditions to warm, house, and feed thousands in need by collecting ingredients from neighboring establishments who are out of power. Thank you!!🙏
We took some socially distant engagement photos...
Who needs a fancy wedding when you have a $7 dress from a Walmart grocery run, a local photographer shooting from a distance, and each other?

@Sequoia_India
has a the craziest/coolest Seed program I have ever seen
@_surgeahead
A select group of seed founders get to spend a week every month in FOUR COUNTRIES (India, Singapore, US, China) to learn best practices from the top CEOs, investors, operators in each region
In high school and college, success is defined by doing the best job at things everyone else is also doing.
In your career, it’s the opposite. You get the greatest returns by doing things that set you apart.
“One of the biggest mistakes a startup can make is bringing on an investor/board member who understands the spreadsheets but doesn’t understand the business. You need to be able to read the map AND understand the topography.”
Great conversation

I’ve been loving this Depression Era cake recipe. No eggs, milk or butter. Costs ~$1 for the whole cake
1.5 c of flour, 1 c sugar, 1 tsp baking soda, pinch of salt, 1/4 c oil, 1 tbsp vinegar, 1 c water and any mix ins
What are your favorite

1/ As one of the first HQ marketing hires at Uber, it saddens me deeply to see Uber lay off 400 people in the marketing org. A few thoughts on Uber Marketing and how we could have done better. (Thread)
Thank you for the support as I embark on my founder journey🙏
A while ago, I wrote about separating profession from identity/self worth. During this transition, I found that the support of people who genuinely care about you no matter what you're doing makes all the difference❤️
What's the best startup incorporation and finance stack right now?
For things like cap table management, banking, legal paperwork etc.
Any other tools that have been invaluable in the early days?
The moving company lost one of our boxes during our move to Austin. I thought it was gone forever until someone LINKEDIN MESSAGED ME saying they got our stuff by mistake 🤯
Thanks Tristan and the internet!
Why is it so hard to register to pay state payroll taxes???
I’m literally trying to give the government money... why must I navigate through software from the 90s, obscure questions and snail mail? 😩 As a former growth PM, this funnel makes me die inside.
Bye 2020. It’s been heartbreaking, daunting and uncertain, but also one of the most eventful years of my life.
I got my first car🚙, left SF👋, drove x-country🛣, got married👰🏻 🤵🏻, left Sequoia🌲, started a company🌱, moved to Austin🤠, and bought a house🏡
Excited for 2021!
(3) Being a part of a hyperscale company is an unparalleled learning experience. You learn by doing, not by listening to talks and webinars. You hone execution ability, learn the pitfalls, see and feel what success looks like. This leads to better ideas and execution.
I’ve found that it was way more effective to be empathetic and understanding of everyone’s motivations in finding a path forward than being super aggressive and cutting down anything/anyone in your way. The latter never worked for me anyway. Your career is an iterative game.
This week at our team meeting, the majority of companies we discussed were founded by women for women.
Whether or not we invest, just having the conversation educates leaders at our firm about challenges women face that they had been unaware of
👏it’s👏about👏damn👏time
😭 Restaurants in Austin that are already hit hard by COVID-19 are literally giving away hot meals FOR FREE
Austin’s government may be an epic failure, but the people here are something truly special 💯🙏
Huge shoutout to Austin’s hospitality workers who are the backbone of this city.
They got to work in these treacherous conditions to warm, house, and feed thousands in need by collecting ingredients from neighboring establishments who are out of power. Thank you!!🙏
Once I wanted to pull out all the stops to woo a company to choose
@sequoia
. The partner I was working with said no and instead had our portfolio companies call the founders.
CEOs whose companies are collectively valued at ~$100B called the company that day.

's treasure of a story has soooooo many good anecdotes. These are just a few.
A brand is like a friendship.
Branding is not something you do once and are done with. You constantly need to put work into it. If you neglect it, it fades away. The more work you put in, the more it can endure over time.
Wise learnings from

My Uber driver just told me that he misses Travis 😭
I feel ya.
My driver, Zeki, was one of the original UberX drivers back in 2013 and has given over 17k rides. He had great stories about Sidecar and the early days of UberX. Thanks for help build Uber, Zeki!
Founders are too good for this world
To all the founders who reached out and helped me even though I passed on investing in your companies in my previous job, I appreciate you more than you can imagine🙏😭
It’s amazing to be in an industry where everyone roots for each other 🚀
I’m always impressed when I meet founders and they’re so excited to tell their story and share their product.
Because I know (from experience) that they’ve had the same exact same conversation and answered the same questions dozens if not hundreds of times 🥵 🙌
Came to
@Uber
for a meeting today. The front desk person remembered me from when I used to work there years ago and printed out my badge from my first visit ever visit to HQ. I’m not crying, you’re crying 😭😭😭😭
