Expecting a kid to learn only from a textbook is like asking them to look at a travel brochure and calling it a vacation.
Walk into my son's room.. taking his summer school online final. He hides his phone. No kidding he is googling the test answers. As we move remote we can't assess the same ways. They WILL Google it!!!

"You wouldnβt go to a hospital that looked the same as 50 years ago.Β So why do we allow this in schools? "
Dear privileged parents who want hard working teachers to provide you with things to do at home. NOTHING NOTHING assigned is better than you reading to your kid. Cooking with them. Spending time. Teachers work hard. Let them stick to inside their class. You got outside of class.

I can point to more "old' teachers who are doing amazing things than I can to teachers who think they are too old to learn ____. Age is not a variable for learning. Attitude is.
I posted on FB about my books, someone replied that I shouldn't be able to wear politics at school.
#BlackLivesMatter
is not politics. Valuing the lives and rights of Black Americans is what is right.
Do we ask kids to be more responsible than adults? How many times have I left something at home as a teacher... did I get a zero? Did I lose points? Did I have detention? How many times does a student get to be HUMAN?
Kid scores 100% on a retest... Only given a 70%. For what possible justification do we put scores in the gradebook that do not match what a student knows?
There is no average time to learn something. Punishing students for taking longer to learn something seems archaic

If we say we are paperless we are shutting out thousands of amazing activities that are better with paper. And kids should touch stuff other than a computer

Allow your students to be the same imperfect human being that you are. Sometimes you forget things, are too tired to do something tonight, have a bad day, need more time.
Make 3 signs for your classroom

Here is some research for you "there is no average time to learn something" and each kid isn't the same so why act like it
We just assume students know how to Google search ... They don't. They know how to type words into a box but how to do it effectively and to analyze the results. We have to teach them.
I am a big proponent of using paper. being paperless is ridiculous, kids should touch something other than a screen. I put all DIRECTIONS online, but not all the activities are digital.
A school "doubled the amount of lunch and recess time its students get from 40 to 80 minutes a day, with felicitous results: lower absenteeism and fewer disciplinary problems. "
My high school nephew has a packet to complete over BREAK! WHAT THE HECK!!
1) It is BREAK... spelled B R E A K
2) What research supports this practice of giving packets of boring worksheets over break vs. the plethora of research about rest and spending time with your family
Sadly there is a pressure to be paperless. This is putting the focus on the wrong thing. Learning should be the focus and kids should touch something other than a screen.
When we say "paperless" we are restricting ourselves from lots of great activities that were designed for paper. Kids should touch something other than a screen sometimes.
My dad is an engineer. Yes he COULD help me with math as a kid but that always ended in frustration. It was overly complicated. My dad is not a teacher. To expect that parents can teach for you at home is unreasonable and inequitable.

Overheard "I had a kid turn in BEAUTIFUL work, easily A and B work, but since it was late kid got 69 on everything." How do we justify this? Can we just admit that the score does NOT measure learning??
"As you leverage technology to meet the needs of learners and help students get what they need, consider how to best leverage the time and role of the teacher."
@katiemartinedu
It is pretty darn PRETENTIOUS to think your homework is quality family time. Not only is it NOT, it adds significant stress to families. It's also grossly inequitable.

I have 5 kids and both Ps work. We just want to make family dinner happen and that can be a struggle.
Schools not taking ALL your years of service is f* BS.

It is official! I have been offered the position of "Instructor of Math Ed in the school of education" at Fresno Pacific University. I am blessed and grateful.
My kids came home from school... they did fun activities in the gym (no complaints) but it makes me wonder the purpose of policies that restrict teachers from using this as a personal day for an extended vacation when it has the least amount of impact on student learning
In other classes students will get boring, rote, too much, teacher lecture, paperwork, etc... IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO PREPARE KIDS FOR THIS. You can not control the quality of learning in other classes, but in YOUR class you can give them an amazing experience.
My new principal yelled at me for spending my own money on supplies. Told me that better be the last time I do that. He will get me what I want and it won't be generic sticky notes. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Had a lovely interview for a math position. When they said the max they would pay (and I have a masters degree) is LESS THAN 50k I had to nicely say thank you but can't do it.

I challenge you on this, ask students to make a presentation with NO WORDS! YOU are your presentation. Your slides are a visual for your AUDIENCE not a crutch for your presentation.
Why only "half credit" back? What grading research says to do that?? We just make this stuff up. There is no average time to learn something so why do we punish kids who take longer to learn it?
School English department is not doing any novels this year. Why... It isn't tested. We are in a sad sad time that we will look back on with shame.

My daughter had HW she was crying over. I asked her why she had HW. She said "I didn't finish in class" why. "I didn't understand it" Guess what... Sending it home didn't make it understandable.

At the end of the first day of school are students excited to come the 2nd day? Create an experience. Make it about the students and not about you reading the syllabus to them and talking about yourself.
Buying your grade is wrong and not equitable. Bringing in Kleenex, scraping gum, donating cans, etc... Should have no impact on grade or whether you can use notes on a test.

Looking at a Colorado school district ... Needs 2 math teachers (and other positions) base pay $35000. Looked up housing π³... Pricey! Don't complain you can't find teachers when you don't pay a liveable wage.
If my kid comes home one more time and tells me what other kids clipped down that day I'm going to lose it. NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!! WHY does my kid even know this?? Clip up charts are wrong. Public shaming is not a discipline tool.
Oh man...here we go...
We can always do better but I firmly believe that class clip charts are a form of bullying.

There is nothing wrong with this generation. They do things differently. And that's awesome. Not something to complain about. Meet them where they are at. Don't expect them to value the 1980's.
