I resigned into retirement when I was threatened with โdisciplinary actionโ for wearing a tie. I loved the white coats but the problem was getting them cleaned.

As an American, may I ask why they did that (or at least what was the justification given? Doctors still wear white coats here--not all of them, but some.

I didn't know that. I remember how proud we were of our white jackets as clinical students. Prof Semple telling us we shouldn't be wearing them while walking from UCH to the Middlesex , xing Tottenham Court Road, but if you carried it all your stuff fell out of the pockets..
