That bit in Drive to Survive where Toto 'secretly' tells
@GeorgeRussell63
that he has the job - it happened at Zandvoort and a rival team boss saw it from his motorhome and immediately sent me this pic!:
Just spoke to one top driver about the tractor, he won't go on record until hearing from FIA but says drivers have been chatting/texting each other during red flag break, and they are all angry
'
@LewisHamilton
on moving on from Abu Dhabi: "This has nothing to do with Max. Max did everything a driver would do given the opportunity he was given. And he's a great competitor. But no issues with him. I don't hold any grudges with anybody."
'
@LewisHamilton
: "I'm glad I went to the toilet. The one I went to, someone had dropped a crazy bomb in there. The worst thing ever. It's going to haunt me for life..." Apparently it was a French TV cameraman
Here's the biggest compliment that
@ScuderiaFerrari
's design team can have. Adrian Newey and
@redbullracing
chief engineer Paul Monaghan check out the F1-75 on the grid. They were there for a while...:
Confirmed too that there is now a legal limbo with
@OscarPiastri
.
@AlpineF1Team
clearly believes that PIA is contractually obliged to drive if offered a 2023 race seat. The question now is what sort of arrangement he and manager Mark Webber have made with
@McLarenF1
...
Classy move by
@LewisHamilton
who after a nightmare evening just found the time to go down to
@HaasF1Team
and ask how
@SchumacherMick
is. No surprise but Guenther Steiner just formally confirmed MSC won't be racing tomorrow
Spoke to many drivers after race including RUS, RIC, ALO, OCO, BOT and others. Everyone upset by the tractor incident. The most scary thing? Several of them didn't see the crane even travelling slowly behind the safety car, an indication of just what visibility was like
1. As you may have seen on TV
@KevinMagnussen
was left stranded at the lap 1 crash scene in Interlagos after
@danielricciardo
- the man penalised for causing the crash - bagged the only seat in the medical car, and no one thought to send it back around to pick him up.
'
@AlpineF1Team
boss Otmar Szafnauer has confirmed that the first the team knew about
@alo_oficial
's departure was from yesterday's
@AstonMartinF1
press release. As of Sunday night, and the last chat with ALO, they still thought he was staying
Whatever side you are on,
@LewisHamilton
or
@Max33Verstappen
, there's a bigger picture. Sunday night should have been the greatest day ever for F1 in terms of global TV attention, attracting new fans, showing the world why we love it so much. And the sport blew it...
Most of Zandvoort looks like this bar tonight. The funny thing is that the man responsible for their hero's car, Adrian Newey, just walked past. And nobody noticed!:
Drivers say goodbye to Franz Tost. Those to appear on video included Seb Vettel,
@kvyatofficial
, Jamie Alguersuari and in a real blast from the Toro Rosso past,
@scottspeed
!
I'm told that
@PierreGASLY
has been to race control to enquire about the tractor incident and was told that it was normal that under the red flag vehicles are allowed on track.
1. Something to watch out for - new F1 race director Niels Wittich has told teams that he won't be asking drivers to give a place back for gaining an advantage. Team & driver have to decide themselves if they're in the wrong and might be penalised if they don't cede the place...
Christian Horner has just confirmed that the damage to
@Max33Verstappen
's floor was caused by a piece of
@AlphaTauriF1
... He showed us a picture of a smiling Max holding it!
Just had a face to face chat with
@PierreGASLY
, one of the most extraordinary in 37 years of doing this job. He said what happened with the tractor was disrespectful to Jules Bianchi and his loved ones - and that he was two metres away from dying today. Powerful stuff.
2. MAG eventually gave up on waiting and attempted to get back on foot. Apparently someone cut a hole in a fence to help him out and then he found himself walking through a public area surrounded by fans as he tried to make it to the pits. Sounds like it was an adventure...
Poor
@OconEsteban
was selected for a random drug test but thus far has been unable to provide a sample! He's being followed around the paddock by someone from the Monza medical ream
2. Along with the DRS discussion drivers were told about a grid presentation ceremony for Sunday, and reminded that it was for the show. One of them then pointed out that without overtaking there wouldn't be much of a show for the fans...
Toto Wolff confirms that neither he nor
@LewisHamilton
will attend the FIA prize giving in Paris tonight. James Allison will represent
@MercedesAMGF1
and pick up the constructors' trophy.
Passed dozens of Dutch motorhomes and caravans on my way to Austria, but these
@Max33Verstappen
fans are the kings of the road - nine of them travel Europe in this converted coach!:
The guarantees of safety given to F1 by the Saudi authorities appear to be along the lines of this happens regularly, only commercial facilities are attacked, they won't attack the race, and we have drone/missile defences in the area. I'm not sure that everyone is so convinced
'
@ValtteriBottas
is still stuck at the airport in Finland after a flight drama, and is conducting his FIA press conference from there. Baku is never an easy place to get to...
It's increasingly clear that at one stage in last night's GPDA meeting the drivers were unanimous in not wanting the race to go ahead, given their safety concerns for the whole paddock. Further dialogue with
@F1
bosses and their team principals led to business as usual today
'
@GeorgeRussell63
: "There was a rogue Australian fan in the pitlane at some point, he stuck his finger up at me when I was waiting to go out. It was around the Red Bull area. I need to check the video and see if an investigation should go into this..." Who could it be?
'
@LewisHamilton
to
@ScuderiaFerrari
in 2025 stories are gathering momentum this morning, and from what I hear it looks like it's really happening. If confirmed it would leave Merc needing a driver, and SAI needing a drive...
Worth recalling how shocked the world was when
@LewisHamilton
signed for
@MercedesAMGF1
. He went there a year ahead of new PU regs, having decided that it was the best bet for '14. History repeats ahead of '26 as again he commits to where he thinks the best package will be...
3. Hearing more and more about an angry exchange between Toto Wolff and Mattia Binotto re the porpoising technical directive at yesterday's meeting. Christian Horner joined in too... and all of this in front of Netflix cameras!
A portrait of Sir Frank Williams is on display in
@WilliamsRacing
hospitality in Jeddah, together with a book of remembrance that paddock regulars will have the opportunity to sign over the weekend:
F1 race director Niels Wittich has mentioned drivers' jewellery in his Melbourne event notes, quoting the sporting code: "The wearing of jewellery in the form of body piercing or metal neck chains is prohibited during the competition & may therefore be checked before the start."
Christian Horner asked if there is mutual respect between himself and Toto Wolff: "I have no issue with Toto. He's done a great job there [pause]... In a team that he inherited."
Great to see Sebastian Vettel one of the last people to leave the paddock tonight - indeed it was so quiet by then that he was able to enjoy a quiet dinner with family and close friends on a table outside
@AstonMartinF1
hospitality without being bothered by anyone.
From
@HaasF1Team
: "Can confirm Mick appears physically fine - he has spoken to his mom etc. Likely being taken to hospital for a scan as a precaution but awaiting FIA update on that. So expect something via them by way of next update."
'
@LewisHamilton
on the drivers' parade: "I've prepared in the best way possible, I've given it absolutely everything. Then it comes down to doing what I love most, and just being me on track."
After the trials of cameras in Bell helmets since Spa last year it has been agreed to update the 2023 F1 Technical Regulations "mandating the use of these helmet cameras for all drivers from 2023 onwards."
Took this shot on the grid on Sunday - it's
@Carlossainz55
's seat out of the car and in the shade to keep it cool! Note the water 'bottle' built into the back of the seat. Other teams put it in the nose:
'
@LewisHamilton
: "I never, ever said I was going to stop. I love doing what I do. It was a difficult time for me, and it was a time where I really needed to take a step back."
What an incredible day for F1. I still don't understand why the option wasn't taken to red flag the race and have a straight fight from a grid start for 2 or 3 racing laps, with HAM and VER on their tyre of choice. It worked perfectly well over just 1 lap in Baku...
1. Zandvoort will be my 500th GP with a media pass. That's 485 on my current consecutive streak, plus 15 I did earlier in 1985-'94 when my reporting focus was on WEC, Japan, IMSA, CART, FF1600 etc. Doesn't include a dozen GPs I attended before that as a fan. Or Melbourne 2020!
A whole flight load of F1 travellers from London waiting for bags in Austin and the first one off belongs to
@GeorgeRussell63
: "At least I've won one race this weekend!"
'
@NicoRosberg
, 4 years at Williams, then Mercedes.
@ValtteriBottas
, 4 years at Williams, then Mercedes.
@GeorgeRussell63
, 3 years at Williams, then Mercedes. RBR isn't the only F1 outfit with its own feeder team!
F1 has confirmed that as I revealed in Spa
@GeorgeRussell63
will run the Bell helmet cam in FP1 and FP2. They want to try it with a taller driver who sits higher in the car than ALO
Sebastian Vettel has decided to mark his retirement by running around the track at 9pm on Saturday, and inviting anyone who wants to join him. It'll probably look a bit like this...:
The problems with the track at Turns 7 and 17 were a result of a known issue with the surfacing process at those points. I just had a look at the overnight fix at 17...:
Sadly my mother, Joy Cooper, passed away last night. She was 87, and had been battling dementia for the past few years. I wrote a few thoughts down here:
Fascinating to hear that one team analysed all the lines drivers took at the tricky banked Turn 3 in practice and concluded that the driver who got it figured it out first was
@alo_oficial
....
'
@HulkHulkenberg
is back in the UK preparing to have a run in the
@AstonMartinF1
simulator at Silverstone so that he can learn the Jeddah track, just in case he's needed next weekend...
1/2 Remember this news from
@AlpineF1Team
on March 12th?: “In the spirit of offering maximum racing opportunities to our stable of young talent, we have agreed that McLaren may call upon Alpine F1 reserve driver Oscar Piastri in the event one of their drivers is unable to race."
Drivers' briefing ran for an hour in Miami tonight and much of it went on a discussion on DRS. Two zones were shortened here, and after lack of passing in Baku drivers are not happy. FIA reluctant to change back without further number crunching.
