Monday will be 5 months since Jamal Khashoggi walked into Saudi consulate in Istanbul to a cruel and horrible death. Still no accounting or accountability from Saudi Arabia or the White House. Just the cruel and seemingly unending reality of business as usual.
Having had honor to work for six, I can say w/o hesitation or reservation Pompeo is worst SecState in history of our Republic. A man who hasn’t a single enduring diplomatic success and now slavishly follows Trump down rabbit hole of a faux second Administration. The shame of it.
8 months after Jamal Khashoggi walked into Saudi consulate to a horrific death at hands of MBS, there’s still no accounting or accountability. Yesterday Trump Adm normalized its relations w/Saudi Arabia by using a manufactured crisis w/Iran to sell arms to Khashoggi’s killers.
In barring Omar and Tlaib Netanyahu in a single act creates more publicity and political oxygen than any visit might have; makes an Israeli PM appear to be a tool of a US President; blackens Israel’s image; and erodes bipartisanship critical to US-Israeli relations
Here’s where Trump’s incessant lying hurts America. If he takes the country to war, Americans and their allies need to believe he’s telling the truth about the reasons and justification, particularly after Iraq. Would you?
Fair or not there won’t be a human on the planet who will understand at a moment when Ds control WH and Congress why they weren’t able to produce real deliverables for American people. What’s at stake now is Ds very capacity to govern.
Biden breaking out of a weakness narrative — hitting al-Zawahiri; adept alliance management in Ukraine; significant climate package; significant gun control measures in decades. May not help in mids. But welcome moment for a president presiding over a deeply polarized nation.
Trump, Kushners returning to New York evokes Fitzgerald on Buchanans in Gatsby. “They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated into their money or vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together leaving others to clean up mess.”
It looks very much like Israel/UAE worried about alienating Russia are hedging in their response to Putin's aggression in Ukraine. This is a key moment for Biden. Forget UAE for a minute. Israel is America's closest Middle East ally. Biden shld expect Bennett to act like it.
Lindsay and I just finished a drive through downtown DC. It’s calm but sad and terrifying. Every Republican in Congress who enabled and supported Trump ought to take the tour to see again — if they didn’t get message on Jan. 6 - what they have helped create.
2 hours into the Blinken hearings on Afghanistan, few fireworks, Ds supportive; Rs unfocused and for most part minus Joe Wilson (R) calling for Blinken’s resignation, quite mild. Blinken more than holding his own. America has moved on; inside Beltway not quite.
Trump says President has total authority. As Harry Truman said about Nixon — he may have read Constitution but he didn’t understand it. In Trump’s case given his statement today, he clearly didn’t even read it.
I love Fauci — a brave even heroic figure. But I didn’t just ride in on a bale of hay yesterday. Why can’t inestimable Tony Fauci simply say we don’t have enough tests. He’s being trumped — phenomenon of dancing around the truth instead of articulating it out of fear of Trump.
Trump is master at creating solutions to problems America doesn’t have and creating new ones in process. Sure Soleimani deserved to die. But a tactical success has come at expense of strategic failure. US position in Iraq weakened; fight vs IS compromised; Iran stronger in Iraq.
In a mere 633 words, Trump undermined CIA credibility, boosted that of a murderous repressive regime, emptied US foreign policy of any moral principle and hyperventilated on what Saudi can offer US. In 25 years working for Rs/Ds never saw presidential cred so badly compromised.
Anybody who’s peddling American exceptionalism and ideological foreign policy pursued on back of a tank ought to spend some time at the Vietnam Memorial. There today I simply could not process the names on that Wall— so many names.
Saudis are high-fiving it in Riyadh tonight thinking that Package-bomb story will push their crime off front pages and with passage of time the midterms and Mueller will ensure it stays there.
Trump came to NATO; created a crisis; claims he fixed it; and has laid basis for an ongoing set of mutually contradictory commitments and misunderstandings.
If Saudis were involved in Jamal’s death or disappearance,that’s obviously on them. But in failing to call MBS out on just about anything, particularly repression at home, Trump Administration has emboldened him and given him sense he can do anything.
It strains credulity beyond the breaking point in MBS's Saudi Arabia that an operation involving this much complexity and risk could have been carried out without his approval. Only the willfully obtuse or complicit would conclude otherwise. This is on MBS's Saudi Arabia
This latest trainwreck -- Kim's opaque motives notwithstanding -- had everything to do with US amateur hour -- insufficient preparation; lack of discipline on statements(Pence/Bolton)Trump's raising expectations and confusion on what end game was to be.
Whatever the Trump Administration tries to do and however dysfunctional the transition process will be, it’s likely unstoppable. Secret Service ramps up protection for Biden in anticipation of win.
Israelis concerned documents Trump took when he left office could compromise their security. Just another reminder to those who argued Trump was the most pro-Israeli president -- ever. He wasn't.
FDR was right. The presidency is above all a place of moral leadership. Tonight Joe Biden is demonstrating what it means to be a moral leader demonstrating compassion, truth, humanity and above all will and skill to lead America out of one of the darkest years in its history.
It’s been almost 40 days since Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and still no accounting by his Saudi killers and no accountability imposed on MBS who ordered his murder. US enabling MBS persuaded him he could literally get away with murder.
It’s at a time like this on the cusp of a significant military escalation in which Americans are in harm’s way that we need a commander in chief who’s truthful, tethered to reality and above all making decisions that are prudent, wise and in national interest.
The absence of braggadocio; the willful avoidance of bitterness and attacks on opponents; the humility and modesty in tone; and the transcendence of the We over the Me is the essence of the man and what's called for in the moment.
By making public the unsubstantiated name of the whistleblower Trump encapsulated the pathology of his presidency—a callous and cruel disregard for the well-being of anyone one or anything untethered from his own personal needs and interests.
These briefings don’t work because there’s no trust in Trump.And my personal view —sorry to say —is the non-trust factor is also affecting the way I’m seeing the medical experts around him. They know he’s off; are trying to remain credible but are gradually bending to his will.
FDR delivered 30 fireside chats 1933-1944 to reassure, explain, level w/American public re: challenges of Depression and World War.Trump gave 35 WH briefings since March 16 to politicize, distort, blame, lie, self-congratulate re: gravest crisis facing nation since then.
Israel is giving America a vital lesson. Voting is necessary but not sufficient. Sometimes you need to vote with your feet to defend democracy and the norms required to sustain and nurture it.
Gaslighting -- a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. Trump and lying by the inestimable
@sbg1
Let me get this straight. In an unprecedented move on oil prices, Saudi Arabia boosts Putin’s economic/political fortunes; adds to inflationary pressures worldwide; sticks it to Joe Biden, and MBS is an ally of the US…really?
Biden sends a welcome and unmistakable signal to Saudi Arabia recalibrating contacts and indirectly slapping down MBS. The days of the MBS direct channel to the White House seem to be over -- at least for now.
John Bolton says no need to listen to tape because he doesn't speak Arabic. This isn't a technical translation issue; it's about demonstrating that you are engaged and not pyschologicalyl distant and detached from this horrific act.
We've have never had more leverage over Saudi Arabi since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Whatever is done in response to Khashoggi's killing isn't just about punishing; it's about recalibrating/changing a Saudi policy that's out of control and damaging US values/interests.
How can a Secretary of State - arguably the worst in the modern period - pen with a straight face a
@washingtonpost
oped on American values and coddle authoritarians — Sisi, Erdogan and his favorite MBS?
@maggieNYT
Having worked for half dozen SecSates and seen scores of talented FSOs give their all for the Republic, my head's exploding. It will take years for State and diplomacy to recover from this forced talent drain.
Saudi paper close to MBS urges US surgical strikes against Iran. Last thing America should be doing is allowing the Saudis or for that matter the Israelis to drag us into a war with Iran. Our agendas aren't identical
If GOP weren’t filled with folks eager to propagandize, both Rs/Ds and many talking heads would level with public that threat of ISIS or al- Qaeda pulling off another 9/11 is low; and greater threat comes from pandemic; home grown terror, principally white nationalist extremism.
Two years ago today, Jamal Khashoggi was lured to Saudi consulate in Istanbul and to his death at hands of the MBS controlled Government of Saudi Arabia. Two years on there’s still no accounting/accountability and lack of any interest by Trump Administration in demanding one.
Having worked/voted for Rs/Ds for most of my professional life, Trumpocracy
@davidfrum
has it right. Trump's challenge isn't dramatic end of Constitution or authoritarian takeover; but the slow bleeds: ad hominem argu-culture; polarization; income inequality undermining America.
Pompeo bends to Trump pressure to release Clinton emails. Having worked for half dozen, Pompeo is without a doubt, the most politicized and worst Secretary of State in modern American history.
The real question for tonight’s debate is not who’s going to take on Bloomberg; but who will take on Bernie. He remains the easiest path to Trump’s second term.
That four months into worst health crisis in a century the media makes headlines of Trump’s mask wearing is a testament to tragic absurdity of this presidency and to reality that we have become hostages reacting to every twist and turn this president chooses to make.
Even in our most incompetent moments never came close to that of Trump’s peace team. Releasing a plan (untethered from anything other than politics) 6 weeks before Israel’s 3rd election within a year and without regard to Palestinians, takes diplomatic malpractice to new levels.
Trump leaves. Fitzgerald in Gatsby on the Buchanans one final time. “They were careless people -Tom and Daisy. They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated into their money or vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let others clean up mess..”
There has never been nor -- let's hope -- will there ever be again, a President whose foreign and domestic policy is totally unmoored; unhinged and untethered from the best interests and well being of the Republic and its citizens that he presumes to lead.
Process of Afghan withdrawal is being touted as major blow to US credibility/competency (probably) and death knell (almost certainly not) of US influence and power in world. It's as if US policy begins/ends w/Afghanistan. Please less breathlessness; more perspective and patience.
Over a 20 year period under Rs and Ds, we did some really dumb things on Arab-Israeli peacemaking. But nothing -- I mean nothing - comes close to the policies being pursued by the Trump Administration which are cruel, confused, and counterproductive for all sides.
I do not understand how any human can look at those young faces - Palestinian and Israeli - alike - on front page
@NYT
and not see —above all else — the tragedy and magnitude of the loss; and grieve for whole worlds upended and futures destroyed.
Nearing 70 and watching this service, I'm tempted to mourn not just McCain's passing but the America I thought I knew. But I cannot. My two children who love this country as I do and McCain's inspiration will not allow it. There is much work to be done.
We’re out of this phase of US-Iran crisis. But I’m reminded of joke about guy who jumps off roof of 10 story building. As he passes the 5th story someone yells out - how ya doing? He replies - So far so good.
Bush 43 with his honest reflections of the divisiveness and anger that consumes us at home is delivering the wisest address of his presidency and post presidency.
Listening to President Zekensky,

@jaketapper
it’s clear that he believes Never Again has become Ever, Ever Again when it comes to mass killing. We should either make good on Never Again or think carefully about whether to continue to say it.
Rereading Gatsby. Fitzgerald on Tom/Daisy Buchanan: “They were careless people. They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up mess they had made.”
If Trump wants to convey condolences from Saudi King Salman, fine. But you don’t do it on day -Americans are killed -untethered from a message of ironclad assurances from King to provide any/all info on shooter. Otherwise Trump sounds like what he’s become- a Saudi apologist.
Can Saudi money and oil buy their way out of pariah status for murdering Jamal Khashoggi? Look to MBS’s reception at the G-20 next week for preliminary answers.
An estimated 116,000 Americans died in 1957-58 flu outbreak and 100,000 in the 1968 outbreak. The tragic difference today — almost 60 years later - is that of 100,000 deaths attributed to COVID, we had the knowledge and capacity to prevent so many.
It is a cruel and bitter reality that at a time we have lost and need a leader like John McCain whose courage, selflessness and commitment define the best of the American spirit, we have a president who knows absolutely nothing of these qualities.
If you believe the Saudi narrative, you’re either interminably obtuse or tacitly complicit in not wanting to know. And for those who believe, I’ve got an Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty to sell you.
@DanKurtzer

@ForeignPolicy
Biden's nomination of William Burns as CIA Director signals many things, most of all that diplomacy and depoliticized intelligence are back
A criminally indicted former president is bad enough; a Republican Party that defends his hypocrisy, recklessness and cruel disregard for the Republic’s security and rule of law takes the pathology that infects our political system to a whole new level.
Israelis took out half of Syrian air defenses in an afternoon. Imagine what the US might have done in 2012. Doesn't answer the challenge of how to end the civil war. But.....

@POTUS
Memo to all interested parties. A call will come. But a clear message is being sent. Netanyahu was Trump’s 3rd call. To quote Dorothy, we’re not in Kansas anymore.
Pompeo thanks Salman for " thorough, transparent, timely investigation" of Khashoggi disappearance. Gone are old days when James Baker slammed his notebook shut and told Assad, Shamir and Palestinians It's gonna be long time before I'm coming back here.
In 40 years following US policy in and outside government never seen any Administration simultaneously support Israel so uncritically and go after Palestinians so harshly both without logic, purpose or national security rationale.
Amazing — instead of doing something about Russian interference, Trump is doing nothing and the other guy Sanders is warning Putin about what will happen to him when he becomes president. What about Trump doing something to protect elections and Bernie mobilizing Congress now.
All these generals and diplomats whose leadership skills are praised and rewarded and who believe we should have stayed in Afghanistan or just needed a different strategy to win ought to take a very long look in the mirror.
Only Trump would turn Kennedy's resignation into issue about him saying that he was honored Kennedy would have so much confidence in him he chose to resign on Trump's watch. It's galactic narcissism on a scale we've never seen in presidency that has been about the we not the me
#CNNTownHall
When you watch Bernie what comes through more than anything else is willful inflexibility and rigidity. He knows everything and has it all figured out. Churchill was right— people who don’t change their minds change nothing.
Stunning that in 25 years of working for both R and D Administrations, there is nothing that even came close to a moral/ethical dilemma to prompt resignation. In 500 plus days of the Trump Administration, I'd have resigned 20 times over.
Congrats to my friend
@CarnegieEndow
colleague. A superb choice - first CIA Director in Agency’s history from career foreign service and a clear signal in choosing a non-political public servant Biden wants to depoliticize the intelligence community.
The hit on Suleimani will produce the first major real time foreign policy crisis for Trump Administration against backdrop of impeachment trial and an election campaign. It’s a potentially terrifying combination requiring wise, prudent decision making and a steady/steely hand.
Biden's speech was the best of his Presidency. At a time when Israelis are traumatized seeking leadership and hope, Biden gave it to them -- and to you Amir and your family.
I just got out of a meeting with President Biden. He invited a dozen Israelis who had been impacted by the war in the most personal way, to see him. I will write more tonight, but for now what I can say is: President Biden loves Israel, loves the Israeli people, and has our back.
